This is one of two Backpacker-Style rooms offering simple yet comfortable accommodation for those on their way to Machu Picchu on their own. The real beauty of this place is outside so most guests do not spend a lot of time in their rooms anyway. The gardens and surroundings areas are lush and full of things to do or simply relax in a hammock and read a book. This room has two bunk beds and is usually booked out by small groups. Currently we do not leave the room open for bookings once a bed has been reserved, so you may end up having the space to yourself. We may change this policy in the future.

The space
Hi there, we're a homestay option a few hours from Machu Picchu and a great place to start or end your journey to the Inca Ruins.

This is one of our shared 'backpacker' rooms. There is no breakfast or other service provided in the room price in these rooms but you'll have a towel and access to the main house and shared areas and of course our beautiful garden. These rooms are perfect for those making their own way to Machu Picchu and who just need somewhere to lay their head. The hot springs at cocalmayo are only an hour's walk from our house (season permitting) so we hope you drop in.

A stay with us is a rare and individual experience of Peruvian family life in the countryside where most people make their living from agriculture. We are nestled down by the river in a stunning valley with waterfalls and tributaries winding their way through the tropical vegetation. We have optional workshops such as coffee and cocoa roasting for you to take away some of your own organic presents for friends and family; and there is the chance to take local walks and visit our farm and see how locals experience this landscape.

Essentially, a stay with us is what you want it to be. We may just be a convenient stopping-off point or perhaps a chance for you to experience living in a place cut-off from the main arteries of Peruvian tourism. Whatever your reasons for visiting we're sure you'll love it here.

Where you’ll be

Santa Teresa, Cuzco, Peru

Our area is really what's left of a once thriving community devastated by floods in 1998 and 2010. It's remote, peaceful, full of tropical plants and a real change for most of our guests. We have few neighbours but a lot of lovely things to see, nice walks and the opportunity to switch off from the world (no phone or internet).

Please note that since 2016 our guests have been welcomed and attended by Tatiana's family as she and Andrew moved back to the UK. Hi I'm Andrew, the co-owner of Yellow River. Our family home is open to all visitors, my wife is Peruvian and her family has farmed these valleys for generations. We grow coffee, chocolate and a lot of fruit so the food is amazing and you'll not believe how green everything is. The price of your room here on airbnb includes a delicious home-cooked dinner and an equally delicious breakfast. We have a few listings with different bed configurations, all of which share a bathroom. We're not your typical tourist hotel. We are on the way to Machu Picchu and more and more tourists are avoiding the crowds and the trains and doing it themselves. Get there in style, relax, experience the real Peru that the majority of people never get to see. I love this area because the pace of life is slower, the landscape is awe-inspiring and every day brings something new. I had never tried coffee before living in Peru and I ended up growing it! From June 2016 it was my wife's sister Svetlana who received our guests for a while as we returned to the UK with our daughter. Since then, things have changed again and now it is Gueidar (my brother-in-law) and Olga and Angel (my parents-in-law) who meet our guests and who will help you to your room. Emory, Tatiana's brother is also usually on hand to help out. We have always taken a lot of pride in giving time to our guests and talking with them about life in this pretty valley. It was with great sadness that we had to return to the UK. However, guests can still come and stay, experience the magic of this place and take a break from the crowds. Whilst we won't be there to enjoy it with you, our home is yours to enjoy, with Tatiana's parents offering excellent home-cooked meals and you're always welcome to go and see the farm at any time. We've become a more classic airbnb host and less hands-on, but we hope you still check us out and get to see what we have to offer. The new backpacker rooms (4 and 5) are priced without meals, but the prices for the main rooms include dinner and breakfast. Please note, whilst we are near Machu Picchu it is hard to do a day trip from us to the ruins. We recommend people stay with us before or after their visit to Machu Picchu to avoid an unnecessary rush or tiring day of travel and walking. It's best to spend the night in Aguas Calientes before your day at the ruins so you can get up early and be one of the first through the gates. We love airbnb and hope you find the time to visit the family here at Yellow River Quellomayo.

During your stay

There's usually someone around to talk to (mostly Spanish speaking) so do ask if you need something. When Tatiana and Andrew were living on-site we spoke English, French and Spanish but now that it is Tatiana's family providing service to our guests it is now an immersive Spanish experience!
