Room in a home

Your own room in a home, plus access to shared spaces.
Some info has been automatically translated.
Quiet comfort in a lively and convenient urban location. Take BART from San Francisco or Oakland Airport and arrive a 5 minute walk to my home in a friendly neighborhood bordering the Temescal and Mosswood districts of Oakland.

Inside the well-loved 121-year-old Victorian, city noise disappears. Outside, you are steps from trendy eateries, all conveniences, and a transportation hub serving Oakland, Berkeley, Emeryville, San Francisco (20 min on BART) and the Peninsula.

The space
Your room is ideal for 1 person and “cozy” for two with a couple of suitcases.

Room has an ensuite bathroom and a new, roomy shower.

The dining room can provide a larger work space in addition to the desk in your room. Your microwave is there, and it’s also a pleasant place to enjoy a light meal.

There’s also a sitting room, with television books as well as maps and brochures for touring the Bay Area, Napa, Monterey, Yosemite, etc.

The patio and pleasant garden are popular for dining & relaxation in the warmer months. This area is shared with host- who is often tending the garden :-)

The laundry room (for guests staying 3 or more days) is well stocked and is conveniently accessed from back porch and patio.

Guest access
Your room has a small refrigerator for your drinks, breakfast items and snacks, and a kettle and items for fresh coffee and tea service. You’ll find bottled water and cream for your coffee or tea.

There is a microwave in the dining room for heating light meals or snacks. Please feel free to eat or work at the dining table, or relax and read in the sitting room.

Front and back porches are available to the considerate smoker, but the house is scrupulously smoke/vape free :-)

During your stay
I love having guests, and am very aware and considerate of busy work or travel schedules, as well as individual preferences for interaction or no interaction. I am always a text message away, or happy to chat in passing.

Other things to note
The kitchen is not listed as an included amenity because it is a “homey” kitchen where I cook, feed the dog, have coffee with a friend and relax. Simpatico guests, not averse to a bit of “real life” clutter, will be happily accommodated!

Laundry is available for guests staying 3 or more days- thank you.

Neighborhood highlights

It is important to appreciate that, although located on a quiet, friendly street, this is an urban setting so awareness of surroundings when walking at night is necessary. If you are driving, leave nothing in your parked car - especially luggage. Early luggage drop-off is available.

Although the majority of visitors avail themselves of quick and easy access to San Francisco, our beloved Temescal is a diverse, eclectic walking neighborhood, featured in two New York Times articles. For example, within a pleasant 15-20 minute walk from your door are 78 well-reviewed eateries representing 21 ethnicities! Several are just a 5-minute walk.

Bikes and scooters are convenient to rent, and have safe, dedicated lanes to and from major transit.

Morning coffee and great breakfast, casual and fine dining are around the corner or just a pleasant stroll from home.

A leisurely 15-20 minute walk takes you to lively Piedmont Avenue, where you'll find Oakland’s historic & beloved Fenton’s Ice cream Parlor and restaurant. Also, independent bookstores and artisanal wares, stores for groceries, wine and necessities as well as 40 of the previously-mentioned eateries.

If you are an exerciser, a 15-20 minute jog or brisk walk through unique neighborhoods with Craftsman homes brings you to adjacent, upscale College Avenue. From the BART station in the lovely, bustling Rockridge district, it’s 2 stops to the University of California Campus - and another unique shopping & dining neighborhood.

Oakland's rapidly developing Uptown neighborhood and the lovely Paramount Theater are 10 minutes by car or 1-2 metro stops away. For the ambitious walker, our lovely Grand Lake Theater & Lake Merritt, the Paramount and Jack London Square are easily accessible

Or, how about a nap or a cup of tea in the garden?

What makes my home unique: Quiet, but super convenient locale
I’m happy to spend time with my guests or give them space
I ran a Bed and Breakfast Inn in Santa Fe, New Mexico and loved hosting travelers from around the U.S. and abroad. I also enjoyed hosting and tutoring international students while studying at UC Berkeley. I am a reader, writer and, now that I am retired from teaching, a community volunteer. In the spring and summer months I enjoy organic gardening and maintaining a tiny urban oasis to share with guests. My family has been in California since the Gold Rush so, although I have lived in other parts of the United States and abroad, I always come home. An AirBnb guest myself, I understand the traveler’s need of a quiet retreat from the stresses of work and/or exploring. I look forward to providing your "home away from home"!
