About This Listing
This 500 sq. ft. guesthouse is nestled on our tree-filled quarter acre lot in a historic neighborhood, just blocks from the hustle and bustle of downtown -- walking distance to the best restaurants, music venues, and activities in Austin.
Bedroom has a queen-sized bed made up with a down comforter. The exposed rafters make the space feel expansive in the small cottage.
When you open the door of the cottage, you'll immediately step into the kitchen and living room space with a clean, restored-vintage design. The kitchen is equipped with basic cooking tools. Breakfast supplies include oatmeal, coffee, and tea. There is a fold-out dining table for 2-3 people and a fold-out sleeper sofa which converts into a queen-size bed. When you step through the "portal" into the bedroom space, you'll pass by closet space on your right and the bathroom on your left. The large bedroom with exposed rafters boasts a queen bed, mirrored vanity, and dresser. Both the living room and bedroom have window units with A/C and heat. The house will be equipped with extra sheets, blankets, and pillows for the fold-out sleeper sofa.
From the porch of the cottage, under the shade of century-old trees, it's easy to forget that you're right in the heart of Austin. A three-block walk will get you to famous Franklin BBQ, coffee shops, restaurants, a bakery, yoga studio, and boutiques on 11th street. The same distance in the other direction will land you on East 6th, full of food trucks, more great restaurants, and bars. On foot, you can walk to the Convention Center in 20 minutes or UT's Darrel K. Royall football stadium in 30 minutes. In addition, the bus stop is two blocks away, the light rail is a 10-minute walk, and in-town bikes can be rented 3 blocks from the house. For those who prefer driving, we'll provide an overnight on-street parking pass. This is a great homebase for F1 races, as the shuttle to the track leaves from the Convention Center downtown. Please note that our nightly price includes 15% for local and state hotel taxes and we are a locally-licensed Short-Term Rental. Our nightly pricing changes for major festivals (SXSW, F1, ACL.)
We love this neighborhood for its close proximity to everything in this great city. It's a treat for us to host our family and friends in this space and hope you'll love it too.
Our cottage is a restored guesthouse, built in the 1940s in an historic neighborhood. We ask you to respect the house, the property, and our neighbors. There is absolutely no smoking allowed in the cottage.
We had a great time in the cottage. It was so central yet a great retreat from east downtown and very peaceful. We had many nights sitting on the porch watching fireflies and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Although we never met Melissa we had clear communication through the app and we met Dave who was lovely and very helpful. Definitely recommend staying here if you're in Austin - lovely place!
The cottage was perfect. Very clean, private, quiet, and secure. The location to cafes, shops, bars, and restaurants on E 6th was fantastic and in general very centrally located. I didn't get to meet Melissa in person but communication was smooth and easy. I would definitely stay there again!
The cottage is an awesome place to stay in downtown Austin. Easy to walk right into the heart of the city, but a quiet safe neighbourhood away from the late night exuberance of Sixth Street. It's totally private with a personalised door code to get in. If we hadn't been out trying to see, hear and eat everything, it would have been a great place to relax. I understand the house itself is a local landmark - we came out one morning to find a school group on a field trip!
Contact was quick and easy - due to some transport chaos we weren't able to arrive as early as we'd hoped but Melissa was very flexible about our changing plans.
Melissa's list of recommendations is perhaps the most comprehensive we've ever received from a host with many pages of excellent tips and favourites. I'm just sorry we weren't in Austin long enough to try them all.
My friend and I traveled to Austin for a long weekend getaway and the Urban Cottage was the perfect place to stay! Melissa and Dave were very welcoming, and all communication and planning with Melissa was absolutely seamless. The cottage was exactly as advertised. It was clean, cozy and comfortable! The cottage was in a safe and fairly central location, walkable to most places within the Austin area. Melissa and Dave were very willing to accommodate and provided a great list of recommended restaurants and bars in the area. I would highly recommend the Urban Cottage for your next trip to Austin!
We had a wonderful stay at Melissa and Dave's cottage. It felt bigger than the photos and was very clean and welcoming. The bed was soft and comfy and the shower had great pressure and lasting hot water. They were very thoughtful in the details, including refreshments in the fridge as well as coffee, tea, and oatmeal, and small amenities you might need such as a hair dryer and iron.
Melissa was very responsive throughout the entire process and allowed us to check-in a few hours early after our flight once the place was ready. The location was easy walking distance from many great restaurants and nightlife including 6th St and Rainey St, but also provided the neighborhood feel of living like a local. We would absolutely recommend staying at this location for anyone's visit to Austin!

About the Host, Melissa
I work in education and my husband is a psychologist. We love hiking, cooking, swimming, exploring the awesome events and restaurants in Austin, and traveling around the world. When we're at home, you'd most likely find Dave either planning a wilderness retreat for Veterans or getting his hands dirty in the yard. I'd be reading a book or making homemade ice cream. We have spent a lot of time making a space that is comfortable and welcoming for our friends and family and we hope our airbnb guests find it that way too!
A drugstore within walking distance is always helpful!N I H 35 Austin TX 78702
Most popular BBQ spot in the country, if not the world. Fantastic lunch for those ambitious enough to get in line by 8am for it. If you need chairs to take along, let us know!Austin TX 78702
Great spot for coffee, sandwiches (they serve them open-faced and call them tartines), and simple bistro-style food. Its our favorite neighborhood spot for easy, simple, casual, affordable meals.East 11th Street Austin TX 78702-1908
Small grocery store with a sandwich shop and bar. Grab a couple of grocery items and a pint of beer on tap.East 11th Street Austin TX 78702
Incredibly cute place to sit outside or check-out the amazingly decorated interior. Homemade sodas and cocktails, oysters and charcuterie plates. Hang for a happy hour or for a meal.East 11th Street Austin TX 78702
Delicious interior Mexican food - less greasy than typical Tex-Mex. It takes self-restraint to not fill up on chips and salsa, but be disciplined because your torta and tacos will be worth it.East 7th Street Austin TX 78702
This butcher shop is a cant miss spot for food tourists in Austin. Unpretentious and exceptional. If you love meat, cured, sliced, and served on a board, this will be your favorite place in Austin.East 7th Street Austin TX 78702
