Nice place to stay especially the wooden second floor where my room was. Kind people, possibility to eat, great location for surfing.
Natalie, was wonderful. She was there waiting to greet me as I exited the airport, which was reassuring as I was traveling alone and my first time in D.R.
The location of the ranch is perfect. It is only a few minutes collectivo taxi (25-35 pesos) or motoconcho (100-150 pesos) to Cabarete or Sosua. There is also a beautiful secluded beach which is about a 10 minute walk from the ranch.
The ranch is cool, they have a pool and her family lives there as well. I met other interesting and friendly guests and her family. Cindy is her daughter and is extremely helpful with any of your questions.
For a small fee I ate dinner nearly every night, whatever they were cooking was fine with me as it was very good. My favorite was lunch which was chicken, rice, beans, and salad. There is also drinks available on at the ranch if you wish. I had coffee every morning and beer in the evening.
I would stay again and recommend this to anyone coming to D.R.
The hosts were warm and very accommodating--they called me a cab from my previous, less-desirable place.
From then on it was proper R&R. The 10-15-minute walk to the beach is nice--there's a place where the swifts are always hunting insects, never stoping to move, mules, and lots of lovely other island flora/fauna.
Encuentro beach is great, and has really nice wave cover for surfers with a lot of options.
Familie Etter know a lot of people who run a lot of activities (from kite-surfing in Cabarete to Horseback riding to, though I did not ask, possibly Voodoo rituals on Tortuga Island (kidding!). But really they have been in the area a while and Ms. Etter reminded me of why the Swiss are known for their attentive yet un-intrusive hospitality.
This was a very encouraging intro to Air_BnB for me.
This accommodation is as advertised. It is a nice, clean, family run property, with lots of pets (friendly dogs) in a beautiful tropical garden. The location is ideal for exploring towns on either side. It is safe, very secure (gated) and easy to get to anywhere from. Nathalie's family are wonderful and accommodating. The rooster (something hard to escape the sound of in rural Dominican Republic) and the dogs barking at night (which Nathalie dealt with when mentioned) are the only concerns I would mention to anyone who isn't a deep sleeper. I have a sleeping challenge and would wake up at the slightest sound...which should be considered. It's a great price for such a nice place.
Many small things were done to help me while there.
Nathalie, Cindy & the baby are wonderful hosts. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The property is lovely and I also met like minded travelers from the States & Germany staying there as well. They offer other amenities at your request such as refreshments & meals (for a very reasonable price) or helping you find a Moto or carrito. They are great guides and very knowledgable about the area. They were able to answer every question & concern & I never got lost as they give amazing directions. The dogs are very friendly & always ready to greet you. The puppies were so adorable I wanted to take them home with me. I would highly recommend Gipsy Ranch and am looking forward to staying there again :)
Gypsy Ranch was a safe refuge for me which turned out to be just what the Doctor ordered. I was visiting another part of the island with my fiancé and I decided to terminate the relationship, took half of the money which was not much and went on line to find the most inexpensive place in Puerto Plata; Nathalie’s place was the most affordable, it was ran by a woman and her daughters with help of a very efficient crew of friends and family members and it requested verification of identity which made me feel secure that the owners screened their guests to avoid riff raff. After an emotional and long 4 hour trip from the city of Santo Domingo, it was comforting to find a smiling Nathalie waiting at the bus stop and helping put the huge suitcases in her small SUV, the charge was minimal. This woman is a dynamo. She works from sunrise to late at night, improving her little Caribbean dream. Nathalie and her daughter Cindy, a new mother of a gorgeous baby, were amazing. I was welcomed as almost a family member; Cindy wanted to make sure that I would not be taken by the ‘motoconchos’ (100 cc’s taxis) (not the best choice of transportation) or the ‘carritos’, or ‘guaguas’, both packed like sardines but the best way to get to talk to the friendly Dominicans and laugh a lot. Cindy told me what was acceptable to pay and what to absolutely refuse to pay. She warned me about being careful not to be a target, not to go out at night alone and to learn which taxis and motoconchos were safe and which were not, she graciously directed me everywhere I had inquired about, and she patiently heard me rehash my breakup stories more times than she should have had to,..very loving and gracious. My room was modest but clean, with a ceiling fan and a bathroom with a shower with hot water all the time. The place has friendly dogs, chickens in a fenced area lots of green lush plants and a cozy pool. One can have them wash one’s clothes or fix a meal for a minimal fee or one can use the cloth lines and explore the town. This was a healing place for me and I recommend it for women travelers, surfers (beach is across the street), horse riders, and anyone who wants the safest, cleanest place in the island without a lot of hassle. I hope to return someday.Thank you Nathalie, Cindy and the friendly, helpful staff of Gypsy Ranch for my wonderful memories...
