Our family-friendly finished lower level sleeps you and your kids! Rest well in a quiet suburban neighborhood on Madison's west side. Nearby are the beltline highway, bus stop, and popular bike trails. Also shopping, dining and sightseeing!

The Space

Lower level guest room with a double bed, single bed and optional single futon bed. Also your own living room and a private full bathroom. Fireplace, cable TV and wireless internet are all included. We are on the west side of Madison near the "beltline" and city bus. We are also near the West Towne Shopping Mall and many restaurants. Hot breakfast provided. Private entrance through the garage. Your hosts are mother and daughter homeowners with interests in history, sustainable living, Shakespeare and other literature, Frank Lloyd Wright, writing, teaching, traveling and gardening.

The guest room was remodeled for your enjoyment after we won a contest for Madison's ugliest room. A local TV channel offered a makeover--furniture, flooring, artwork, painting--for the "winning" room, and all viewers were invited to vote. What was once an unappealing, unfinished room blossomed into a pleasant, comfortable space, which we enjoy sharing with guests!

The room includes a refrigerator and microwave, and we will loan you a picnic backpack which includes dishes and tableware for four. This is our attempt to provide you with a meager kitchenette.

Guest Access

The guest bedroom, adjoining hall, bathroom and family room/living room are yours exclusively. The family room opens to a backyard patio which is yours to use, and the back yard has a tree fort play structure you or your kids are welcome to enjoy!

Interaction with Guests

We will welcome you when you arrive and give you a garage door opener, so you can come and go at any time. We will provide breakfasts and join you at the table at whatever time you request. Feel free to use us as a resource on the local area and places of interest! We want you to enjoy our city as much as we do.

The Neighborhood

We live in an established, wooded area with a large city park at the end of the street. Our tree-lined street is home to many birds and squirrels, as well as the occasional fox or raccoon. We know and like all our neighbors.

Getting around

We are fifty yards from a city bus stop that serves commuters heading in to the university or capitol area of the city. If you want to use the bus during non-commuter hours, buses operate at frequent intervals throughout the day from a hub one mile walking distance from our house along safe, busy streets. Our house has ample on-street parking, and you can park in the drive with no trouble. We are on the other side of town from the airport, so a cab will be needed if you come by air. The bus will get you here, too, but it's a long ride from the airport. However, if you drive, we are easily reachable from all area interstates and highways 12, 18, 14 and 151.

Other Things to Note

If you suffer from cat allergies, this may be a difficult house for you to stay in. However, the cats are scrupulously kept out of the guest bedroom, so that area, at least, should not exacerbate your symptoms.

  • My son and I stayed with Teresa and Ardis for four days while we did some apartment hunting. The rooms were very comfortable and the location pleasant. We enjoyed breakfast with them after an early morning walk in the tree lined neighborhood. Teresa and Ardis were very accommodating, purchasing a microwave for our use before we arrived. This gave us the option of heating up leftovers from the wonderful Madison restaurants. The location worked out well: half way between downtown and the Epic campus, which worked out well for our apartment search. We would gladly stay here again.

  • First time Airbnb-ing a "private room" but the private entrance made coming and going a breeze. Gracious hosts were welcoming and very accommodating to our check in/out needs. Big screen smart TV in a comfortable and private lounging area made it easy to relax. Their place also has much faster internet (30 Mbps) than most places so we could easily stream with our chromecast. The place was clean, smelled great, and had nice A/C. Location was also ideal for bike riding since it connected to multiple bike routes and trails. This place can't be beat for the price!

  • Ever since we requested Ardis to host us, everything was easy and nice. The communication prior to our arrival was smooth. The house they live is spacious, cozy and with a very personal and beautiful touch. We had the basement for ourselves, which felt like being on our own place. Very clean, warm and beautifully decorated. The following morning they surprised us with a delicious breakfast facing their beautiful backyard. They were very interesting, kind and welcoming. I highly recommend meeting and staying with them. Madison was quite a distance from their home, but not a problem if you are driving :)

  • I didn't actually stay at Ardis place, because we didn't get confirmation from AirBnB in time. So we had already found another place to stay. But Ardis was very kind to us and helped to sort things out with AirBnB. She repayed the booking costs. If I come back to Madison I wouldn't hesitate to book at Ardis' again.

  • Ardis and Theresa were wonderfully accommodating and shared some of their adventures with us. We loved that we did not have a curfew...got in when we did and left when we were ready. Beds were super comfortable and the sheets were super soft. Their home was welcoming, spacious, and peaceful. Windows surrounded their home, showcasing an ever so inviting tree house in a natural setting. We enjoyed the tasty frittata breakfast along with fruit compote. Truly a relaxing stay that fit right into our annual mother/daughter/granddaughter weekend. Thank you for being a great part of this years memories. :)

  • Ardis and Teresa are both perfectly friendly and accommodating and their house is beautiful, staying with them was a pleasure. I work in Madison but live almost an hour outside town, so there are definitely times I end up staying in town late or needing to be in early, and I love having a safe, cozy place to crash. They provide the garage door opener when you check in and having a private entrance to the house is super convenient.

The house itself is gorgeous inside, a split level with four distinct living areas, one of which is the fully finished lower-level guest room that is nicely tucked away from the main activity of the house. I am allergic to cats but as they say the cats are kept out of the guest room and I am able to stay there without problems, and they are perfectly ready to offer a sheet to sit on it I want to lounge on the couch :) The living room is cozy with the fireplace in winter and the garden/porch is great for warm weather outdoor sitting.

About
My daughter and I own our home together and would love to share it with you. I'm a retired journalist and college English instructor and she is a home energy auditor. We both write. I've published a couple of books and many magazine articles. My daughter writes television and movie fan fiction. We love to travel. We've visited China, Western Europe, UK, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru, Egypt, and frequently the Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ontario. It's great fun to meet fellow travelers. We're working at learning Esperanto, but we could use some practice.
