I rarely respond with detailed information, but this review has to be an exception.

1. I do have friends who are staying with me temporarily. They do not plan to permanently stay at my home. All of us need help at some point in our live. Michele is not privy to the entire situation ad her statement regrettably compromises this family's dignity. I am aghast.
2. I openly state that I have 4 large dogs. This is not unusual and this is known BEFORE booking at my house. This information disclosed These are 60 to 80 pound dogs and unless people are extremely dog-savvy, four dogs greeting you at the door is a LOT of dog love. One of my pups prefers to eat alone. She also prefers to take the lead over the boys. She is astute about people's intentions and I'm good with that. I could easily take down the doors. However, to keep dog hair out of the upstairs and to ease the entrances and exits for less dog-savvy folks, the gates are there.
3. It is NORMAL for dogs to bark when someone enters the house or is on the property. My dogs are an early warning system and a strong deterrent for break-ins and other issues. Enough said.
4. Michele chose to feed one of my dogs, wet CAT food without asking for my permission. The issue is that this dog has has bladder crystal issues and the chemistry of cat food can trigger those crystals and cause a UTI infection for me. Uncomfortable for the dog and expensive for me.
5. "Everyone is coming and going at various times" After Michele's first evening check-in at around 9:30 p.m., she did not return to the residence until after midnight subsequent nights. Unknown to Michele is that I WAS at the house during the daytime, while Michele was not there, until close to 10 and 11 p.m. several evenings. However, due to the daytime nature of my job, I must be up early and I cannot not sleep in. I start my day between 5 and 6:30 a.m. Michele's preference was to sleep in later in the morning, to 9:30 or 10 a.m. and then go out for her errands. On at least one occasion, I was there before Michele left for the morning, but was busy with my work. And waved to Michele as she went out the door that day. On my profile, I say that quiet hours are from about 10ish p.m. to 6 a.m. My home is not a hotel. Walls are not sound-proofed, and most folks have day jobs. I also am sound-sensitive and value quiet, but I have a regular day schedule.

6. Let me address the issue of my back door and people being at home. More often that not, someone is home, although a car may not be there. If the weather is temperate, I allow the door to be open and the dogs are allowed to go outside. Most often, they remain indoors. The door should be locked appropriately. Yes, people do open and close the doors if they are there to let the pups in and out. It's been part of the friendly nature of the the house. The pups paw at the door to request an outing. They "go" on their own and return to the house. I do not understand why this fact needs disclosure, but so be it. Judge for yourself whether a creature asking to go out on its own for necessities is a "con."
NOTE: When traveling, on one home stay, my son and I let the chickens out for one host and opened the coop for them to return home that evening. It was nothing to write about, just a feature of the house.
7. Because of fatigue associated with my recent surgery (and I am pushing things as my surgeons would have preferred I went to complete rest for 4 to 7 weeks), my friends and others offered to help out with dog care. Why on earth this detail needs to be disclosed on an AirBNB review I have no idea. And it's embarrassing for me for that to be disclosed. Know that I am grateful for their kindness A checklist helps everyone keep up with the tasks. One dog has hip dysplasia and pain. Another dog had an earlier life tethered. During that time, she suffered a broken leg, which pains her in the winter. She also takes a medication that helps with another issue. Given that help is being extended by MULTIPLE people willing to help me with the care of the pups during this time, there is a checklist on the fridge. The importance of the detail for considering my home for your stay is a mystery to me, but so be it. At least you know that the dogs are well cared for an attended to. What's difficult for me is the public disclosure that I have needed and that I now feel compelled to disclose my surgery so that people understand WHY I am accepting help. I should not be embarrassed, but I am.

Other Issues were addressed during Michele's stay:
The room fridge unexpectedly started to make a noise. It was replaced the next morning.
Extra covers were supplied the next day. Generally the room stays between 72F and 76F, so it's pretty toasty. Both a freshly laundered down and a freshly laundered polyfilled comforter were supplied.

Other issues:
1. My 5 year old bonus grandson needed to settle in for the night the first night. Another AirBNBer, unseen by Michele, could hear Michele at the other end of the hallway, and described the words as a terse "outburst." Michele apologized the next day. I did not know how terse she was until the fellow AirBNBer disclosed the situation. This detracted from the fellow AirBNBers experience.
2. Michele messaged me late at night asking if the heat would come on as there had been cooking in the kitchen and she didn't know if the thermostat and heat would kick in. I replied between 2 and 4 a.m. in the morning to the text and reminded Michele to please close her room window. (She did not know that I was there that day and saw that the window was open by about a foot). I did not hear from her until early afternoon the next day that the heating had worked just fine for her.
3. At first meeting, I explained my recent surgery. Michele expressed her religious beliefs and offered to lay hands on me for healing. While I appreciated the sentiment, the thought of someone I don't know touching me in a fairly intimate way is very uncomfortable for me. For me as a host, it meant that I slightly wanted to avoid the guest, to avoid an uncomfortable situation for myself.
4. The next day, Michele contacted me about the thermostat being set to 70 degrees for the heat and expressed her concerns about the cost of my heating. I responded that the care and comfort of people who are in my home is my foremost concern.
5. Michele offered to walk each of my dogs. I allowed it. She only contacted me after walking two of them and needing the collar for one of the dogs. (He had a bath with a groomer and his collar was with me).
6. Because dogs can have their own odors, I picked up some Airwick air fresheners. (In addition to having them groomed away from home, during the time Michele was at the house). Before her stay, Michele did not communicate that she has chemical sensitivities. She unplugged them all and communicated NOT with me, but with my friends, about the chemical sensitivity.
7. There is an electric water cooler in the upstairs hallway to ease getting water at night. It's silent to most of us, but Michele could hear it. The unit was shifted down the hallway closer to another room away from the hallway wall that adjoins the room where Michele stayed. The unit was still unplugged every night. This means that the time and temperature needed to be reset each time. I learned of this AFTER Michele's stay. That Michele could hear the water cooler was not disclosed. The AirBNBer in the adjoining room could not hear the unit.

This particular stay has caused me to rethink my ability and willingness to share my home via AirBNB as I feel some of the details disclosed in this review compromise the safety, comfort and dignity of my home.

I would have GLADLY cancelled any subsequent nights of Michele's stay and refunded the remaining balance (as you will see from another review) and brought up the topic after the first night's stay. In retrospect, perhaps I should have insisted that Michele leave, but I thought that the stay was going reasonably well considering Michele's late hours, etc. I believe that I was mistaken.

I have these recommendations for hosts and guests:
1. Disclose if you are chemically sensitive before the stay.
2. Discuss quiet hours.
3. Review the first night's stay and be upfront about your experience. Make changes if needed.

Changes that are underway based on Michelle's review and Michael's stay.
1. Lower gates so that the pups can see who is arriving.
2. There is a change underway for the security of my back door
3. Additional measures (video and sound monitoring) to ensure that I know who is coming and going and at what times.
4. Additional exercise for the one pup who seems to be feeling perky lately and who who needs more exercise to be more tired at night to get a good night's rest.

I strongly value the privacy and safety of anyone and myself at my home.
This recent experience has me questioning sharing my home.

It's been a blessing of meeting some wonderful people and feeling like I could provide a niche "pay it forward" and "pay it back" service. My home is modest compared to many. The money does help me repair and improve the house and extend a helping hand to launch others. There have been stays where people are with me for a month and move on to their new lives. I am grateful for their company and their stays. And I am grateful when I can pay things forward to also charitably help others. The term, "taken up residence" grates on me as it sounds like undignified "squatting" on a property. My preference is to respectfully extend that help without compromising the dignity of others.

Thank you for considering my home for your stay. If you have concerns based on this review, please openly talk with me about them with me before your stay so that I can straightforwardly address those concerns.

In the meantime, my healing is slow, but progressing and I *hope* to resume a more active lifestyle soon.
