About this listing
Located in the heart of the community Tavares Bastos, The Maze was build in 1981 as a family home by British artist Bob Nadkarni, resembling a labyrinth in the middle of the favela.
(Please look up The Maze Rio to learn more)
Over the years The Maze developed into a multi-faceted cultural center with Live Jazz events [cited 6 times World Top Jazz Venue], cutting edge Brazilian music shows, a permanent art exhibition, and architecture described as ‘Unique & Original’ by National Geographic.
We offer 5 private bedrooms with double bed and bathroom inc. fan + 1 small shared guest kitchen. Large saloon with free Wifi, multiple bars and a spectacular panoramic view over the Guanabara Bay & the Sugar Loaf.
This is also a family home and the atmosphere is very relaxed.
Included is a big breakfast and the lively, legendary discussions with Bob. The MAZE has hosted film directors, movie stars (Stallone, Edward Norton), musicians (Snoop Dogg, Pharell Williams), writers, anthropologists, journalists, university professors, scientists, and yes, honeymoon couples.
The bar is always open on an "honour" system... so help yourself. The only rule is that no drugs are allowed on the premises. Otherwise sit back relax and enjoy.
We speak English, French and Portuguese and although life's definitely to short to learn German we will manage to communicate as well.
Guests get free entrance to our music events which take place once or twice a month. (We will let you know in advance if there is an event taking place during your stay.)
You are free to come and go any time of day or night. You will receive your own keys upon arrival.
Other things to note
The Maze is located in one of the safest places in town. We would never deliberately put our guests in any precarious situation.
Recently, some guests were told by taxi drivers that they can’t go up the favela, because it’s too dangerous. They will of course conveniently offer to take you to a hotel in Copacabana or Ipanema. What they won’t tell you is that they will most likely receive a commission for that service.

Cancel up to 5 days before your trip and get a full refund. Cancel within 5 days of your trip and the first night is non-refundable, but 50% of the cost for the remaining nights will be refunded.

Hi i am Bob, a painter, writer, raconteur, musician, "Renaissance Man" and favela architect; I first came to Brazil in 1972 as a BBC television correspondent and fell in love with Rio. I am married to Marluce and we live in "The Maze" with our two great kids Eric & Lucy. I personally built The Maze bit by bit over many years and the place is continuously evolving.
This architectually ambitious home has featured in film and music videos from Pharrell to The Incredible Hulk and is described by National Geographic as "unique and original". it is situated in one Rio De Janeiro's smallest & safest favelas (Tavares Bastos) and is easily reached by regular Taxi, Moto Taxi or Combi Van. It features a breathtaking panorama over Sugarloaf mountain and Guanabara Bay which can be viewed from a myriad of balconies or through a huge 15ft x 9ft glassless window in the breakfast/living room. Come stay with us at "The Maze"... You will lose yourself and find yourself!
