About this listing
Stay in a private room with a bilingual host in a small, mountain town. Halfway between La Ceiba and Tegucigalpa. Near: a natural bridge complete with thermal shower(!), hikes to pine forests and coffee plantations, river with swimming holes. Learn first-hand about sustainable agriculture or tutor English middle-schoolers.
This is definitely off the beaten track. 3 hours from Teguicigalpa, 4 hours from San Pedro Sula, 6 hours from La Ceiba (all times by bus). You'll want to stay for a few days to soak in the local culture and participate in skill-sharing. A great place to learn Spanish as there are no other foreigners in the town. The region has great tourism potential (it's beautiful and has maintained traditions) but the paved highway still won't arrive for another few years. Take advantage of the solitude and remoteness while you still can!
Room includes a powerful fan. Slow internet access is available for free through a cell signal modem. Free purified water. Kitchen is available and there are markets to buy basic goods. Daily vegetable trucks pass through the town.
Interaction with Guests
You will be staying with a family on a year-round, functioning farm. Dario is the director of the local elementary/middle school and learned English while participating in a teaching fellowship in the United States.
We are surrounded by farms, dirt roads and green hills.
There are buses to San Antonio from San Pedro Sula/El Progreso, Tegucigalpa and Yoro (if you are coming from La Ceiba).
Golden Rule. Respect is very important.
