The Space

casa quetzal is a beautiful house up on the Nanzal Hill, built facing North towards the ocean, catching every ocean breeze making this house cool and fresh. From every room there are amazing views. The windows are doors that totally open up towards the ocean. You can see it everywhere, in every room and hear the waves rolling into the sandy beaches.
Very comfortable and breezy.

Sayulita can get noisy especially around the Holidays and Spring Break and casa quetzal is a welcome refuge from all the bustle, yet only minutes away from the pueble and the beaches.

The roof is one huge space with hamacas, a BBQue and a table large enough to seat 8 people. Up here you can see eye to eye with the seagulls and every once in a while if you are lucky with the eagles.

The whole top floor is one open space.
Fully functional kitchen with granite counters and bar chairs ideal for breakfasts and snacks. Traditional style Mexican dishes, Italian stove-top espresso maker, blender, pots & pans, etc...
The dining room has a table to seat six people overlooking the pueblo and the living room with it's comfortable traditional 'equipaque' furnitures. There is a small bathroom, a toilet and a sink.

Downstairs are the three bed rooms. All open up fully towards the sea. The master bed-room with a king-sized bed has it's own bathroom, shower and little balcony overlooking the garden.
The middle room (with two twin-sized beds, ideally for children, but can be pushed together to make a king bed for a couple) and the third bed room (with king-bed) share a bathroom, each room has it's own sink and closet area, but the shower and toilet are shared.
Mosquito nets are provided for each bed. Hanging there, ready to be used.

Around the salt-water pool there are three, pool chaises with pillows.

In the garden we have many different patios some with hamacas and walk-ways where you can be private or find the different fruit-bearing trees and taste their fruit.

casa quetzal is a truly quiet, serene and private place, ideal for family gatherings, friends or just the two of you!

It is best to rent a car in Puerto Vallarta, this way you don't have to walk up and down the hill, which might be a challenge for some, especially in the heat.
To others the walk up and down is a welcome exercise.

The Neighborhood

Serenity and nature.
Birds, iguanas, butterflies, fire-bugs at night.

Getting around

A car is recommendable, although the walk up and down the hill is possible and an excellent way to get into shape. There are taxis who will take you back up on those day you don't feel like walking. ATV's is another possibility.

  • Casa Quetzal is an amazing place, just like we read in the reviews and saw in the photos. We spent a week here for our honeymoon and it was very quiet and private, despite the bustle in the town of Sayulita below. Very relaxing to wake up in the morning with a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean from the pool. We had no issues at all and absolutely loved the place. I was a little nervous that it would be hot there, as we were there in June, and there's no air conditioning, but despite the heat, the hillside setting (nice breeze) and powerful ceiling fans in every room made it perfectly comfortable. I can't wait to go back and visit again.

  • Hermosa vista por cualquier ángulo!!, muy bonita casa con estilo mexicano, espacios amplios, cómoda. Recomendable por la tranquilidad que hay en el lugar, el sonido de las olas realmente relaja.
    Muy buena atención.
Mi esposo, mis hijos y yo pasamos unas excelentes vacaciones ahí.

  • it is hard to find the appropriate words to describe our stay at Casa Quetzal. If I had to pick one word...I would say it was delicious! Everything about it... the view, the food of Sayulita, Chole and Federico's warmth and hospitality, the breathtaking sunsets and moonlit midnights, oh...did I say the VIEW! All the amenities provided were as expected and perfectly comfortable. The noseeums were abundant...but at night, sleeping with the net warded them off. The property is very private so it was a true getaway from it all. You must visit ChocoBanana...and there are many taco stands worth the stop.

Though it wasn't a negative for us...the hill to get to the casa is quite steep. It's a great workout, though. If you do not want to, or cannot climb it...there are many taxis in town that can bring you up.

I am hoping to visit again soon...and hopefully stay for two weeks! There were many things to do in Sayulita that we simply didn't have the time for.
Next time I plan to sea kayak and visit other nearby beaches... but I know I will definitely be staying at Casa Quetzal everytime I come!

  • We had an absolutely wonderful time at Casa Quetzal in Sayulita. The house was a peaceful sanctuary for our family during spring break. The pictures on the website do not do justice to the sweeping vista that is the view from every room in Casa Quetzal. The kitchen had every amenity we required and the beds had incredibly comfortable mattresses. While we found the Internet flash drive was difficult to work with our Macs, the house computer worked well for the few times we wanted to check in with the outside world.

The staff that tends to the house and its guests were outstanding.
Federico came to meet our taxi when we arrivedin the town plaza and guided the driver up the hill to the house. Chole, the housekeeper, and her mother were extremely pleasant and helpful with suggestions for activities.

The house is equipped with a very secure safe wherein we kept our passports, money, and wallets, and we had absolutely no trouble or worries with the security of our belongings. Our only mishap occurred when our daughter inadvertently let her wallet in the house when we departed. Chole found the wallet, and Patrice was in contact with us about it later that same day. Federico volunteered to go all the way into Puerto Vallarta to return it to us via FedEx. We were delighted to receive the wallet with the cash, credit, and id cards still inside only a few days later.

We are deeply grateful for the honesty, integrity and kindness of Chole , Federico, and Patrice who went to such lengths and expense to return the wallet to us.

We will not hesitate to return to Casa Quetzal and recommend it to everyone we know!

  • We had an amazing time at Casa Quetzal. The house looks even better than on the pictures… the view is stunning, the breeze up the hill is very pleasant, all rooms have a view on the ocean and the house keepers are very friendly and helpful people.

We would love to come back!

  • I booked Patrice's beautiful space for a girls' getaway - and the three bedroom, three bath home nestled on the hillside was a great value and size for our group. Patrice was easy to communicate with online and Frederico, her property manager in Sayulita, was extremely friendly and a great host.

As advertised the hill this house is on is not for the faint of heart! Bring sneakers for the 15 minute walk up/down and get four wheel drive to make the ride up less thrilling/terrifying. However, the hill is what provides the privacy and stunning views, and for me, was worth it. The pictures do not do the view justice!

For those that want to get away from it all and relax a bit outside of a charming Mexican surf town, this is for you. I loved the privacy of having our own pool, the open air plan for the living space, and falling asleep to the sound of the waves and highly recommend Casa Quetzal. The value for the price is unbeatable, but those looking for a high end resort-like-experience with AC, long hot showers, or fancy amenities should consider looking elsewhere.

    For us, this was heaven.

On the last night of our stay in this otherwise lovely house we were ROBBED WHILE ON THE PREMISES during a dinner prepared for us by the cleaning lady and her mother. The timing was such that the robber knew exactly when and where to enter and during a very short ‘window of time’ went directly to the room where the safe was. The house owner’s response was less than satisfactory, stating that we should have kept our bedroom doors locked at all times, even while being in the kitchen JUST ONE LEVEL UP from the bedrooms. We were not warned ahead of time of the need for this heightened amount of security in this isolated, private, walled compound and most likely would not have rented here if so. The house has an obvious security problem that possible renters need to be made aware of, hence this review. Unfortunately the owner refuses to acknowledge this security issue and even denied that any robbery had ever happened before, EVEN THOUGH THIS WAS NOT THE FIRST ROBBERY IN THIS HOUSE. This I discovered after our robbery when searching through past comments from renters at Casa Quetzal on another rental website. Needles to say we were not only extremely disappointed by the robbery but also by the consequent reaction of the owner. RENTERS BE WARNED

  • Casa Quetzal was a dream! We couldn't have asked for more. The stunning house was a 3 story paradise. We had everything we needed. Although the hill is very steep it was great for the legs and the views were unbeatable. You can get cabs no problem if you don't want to do the walk. Patrice answered all our questions before leaving, and Chole and Frederico we're very kind and extremely helpful. We had Chole cook for us one night and it was absolutely delicious.

The town of Sayulita is very special. The food was incredible, the people are so genuine, the beaches were majestic, and there was no shortage of things to do. Las Marietas islands are definitely worth trip. We saw breaching whales from our boat and the caves and snorkelling were fantastic.

The shopping was great as well. Check out the store Evoke, Artefakto, Revolucion Del Sueno, Ula, and many more.

I would recommend Casa Quetzal to anyone! It was extremely hard to leave but we will definitely be returning to this amazing place.

Thank you so much Patrice for allowing us to experience Sayulita from the comforts of your awesome Casa.

  • A group of friends and I stayed here for a destination wedding and it was such a wonderful, beautiful place to stay! Its true the hike up is steep (3 hills in total, about 10 minutes) but so incredibly worth it even though we went up and down at least twice per day for 4 days. By no means are we fitness freaks either! We jumped in the salt water pool and enjoyed the view as our congrats for making the climb. With all the great food we ate in sayulita.... It was great to work some of it off anyway! Be aware tho the house is difficult to find and some taxi drivers did not know where it was so be sure to be in touch with the contact person on your arrival.

Overall, a beautiful, clean, safe place to stay and enjoy the amazing views of the coast. I would definitely recommend this to everyone.

  • Awesome location with an amazing view. Patrice made everything very clear and convenient, only issue was our driver who couldn't make it up the hill. The hill is uber steep and every taxi ride or walk was an adventure (fun adventure), especially with some of the older taxis that can't go up the hills too well (golf cars seem to do fine, and so do legs).

The doors on the second floor are amazing, and make the place this giant open air living room/kitchen.

We wish we had time to use the BBQ upstairs, but we definitely used the hammocks and setup some of our own (3rd floor view is amazing for sunsets - we caught the moonrise and sunset at the same time).

The pool is saltwater, which is great, and a bit chilly, but was nice for the hotter days and for quick cool offs.

Beds were super comfy which is not common in Mexico.

Overall awesome experience, and great location. Far enough way from Sayulita to not hear to rowdy nights, but close enough to be able to walk in less than 10 minutes (or taxi in 5).

I am a Designer of houses and Interiors
Originally I am from Switzerland and have visited and lived in many different places in the world. Now I mostly share my time between Berkeley, California and Nayarit, Mexico. I love to open my space to travelers, make them comfortable and show them what it is I find so special about the two places that I chose to live in. I like the good things in life: an interesting conversation with friends, a good laugh and a glass of wine, or tequila to go with it. All kinds of Art, expressions of creativity, music, especially Latin & African rhythms, but also Opera. But mostly I enjoy the quiet, natural surroundings, the gardens and the views both of my places offer. It brings me peace and happiness.
