casa quetzal is a beautiful house up on the Nanzal Hill, built facing North towards the ocean, catching every ocean breeze making this house cool and fresh. From every room there are amazing views. The windows are doors that totally open up towards the ocean. You can see it everywhere, in every room and hear the waves rolling into the sandy beaches.
Very comfortable and breezy.
Sayulita can get noisy especially around the Holidays and Spring Break and casa quetzal is a welcome refuge from all the bustle, yet only minutes away from the pueble and the beaches.
The roof is one huge space with hamacas, a BBQue and a table large enough to seat 8 people. Up here you can see eye to eye with the seagulls and every once in a while if you are lucky with the eagles.
The whole top floor is one open space.
Fully functional kitchen with granite counters and bar chairs ideal for breakfasts and snacks. Traditional style Mexican dishes, Italian stove-top espresso maker, blender, pots & pans, etc...
The dining room has a table to seat six people overlooking the pueblo and the living room with it's comfortable traditional 'equipaque' furnitures. There is a small bathroom, a toilet and a sink.
Downstairs are the three bed rooms. All open up fully towards the sea. The master bed-room with a king-sized bed has it's own bathroom, shower and little balcony overlooking the garden.
The middle room (with two twin-sized beds, ideally for children, but can be pushed together to make a king bed for a couple) and the third bed room (with king-bed) share a bathroom, each room has it's own sink and closet area, but the shower and toilet are shared.
Mosquito nets are provided for each bed. Hanging there, ready to be used.
Around the salt-water pool there are three, pool chaises with pillows.
In the garden we have many different patios some with hamacas and walk-ways where you can be private or find the different fruit-bearing trees and taste their fruit.
casa quetzal is a truly quiet, serene and private place, ideal for family gatherings, friends or just the two of you!
It is best to rent a car in Puerto Vallarta, this way you don't have to walk up and down the hill, which might be a challenge for some, especially in the heat.
To others the walk up and down is a welcome exercise.

We had an amazing time at Casa Quetzal. The house looks even better than on the pictures… the view is stunning, the breeze up the hill is very pleasant, all rooms have a view on the ocean and the house keepers are very friendly and helpful people.
We would love to come back!
I booked Patrice's beautiful space for a girls' getaway - and the three bedroom, three bath home nestled on the hillside was a great value and size for our group. Patrice was easy to communicate with online and Frederico, her property manager in Sayulita, was extremely friendly and a great host.
As advertised the hill this house is on is not for the faint of heart! Bring sneakers for the 15 minute walk up/down and get four wheel drive to make the ride up less thrilling/terrifying. However, the hill is what provides the privacy and stunning views, and for me, was worth it. The pictures do not do the view justice!
For those that want to get away from it all and relax a bit outside of a charming Mexican surf town, this is for you. I loved the privacy of having our own pool, the open air plan for the living space, and falling asleep to the sound of the waves and highly recommend Casa Quetzal. The value for the price is unbeatable, but those looking for a high end resort-like-experience with AC, long hot showers, or fancy amenities should consider looking elsewhere.
For us, this was heaven.
BE WARNED OF POSSIBLE ROBBERIES AT CASA QUETZAL:
On the last night of our stay in this otherwise lovely house we were ROBBED WHILE ON THE PREMISES during a dinner prepared for us by the cleaning lady and her mother. The timing was such that the robber knew exactly when and where to enter and during a very short ‘window of time’ went directly to the room where the safe was. The house owner’s response was less than satisfactory, stating that we should have kept our bedroom doors locked at all times, even while being in the kitchen JUST ONE LEVEL UP from the bedrooms. We were not warned ahead of time of the need for this heightened amount of security in this isolated, private, walled compound and most likely would not have rented here if so. The house has an obvious security problem that possible renters need to be made aware of, hence this review. Unfortunately the owner refuses to acknowledge this security issue and even denied that any robbery had ever happened before, EVEN THOUGH THIS WAS NOT THE FIRST ROBBERY IN THIS HOUSE. This I discovered after our robbery when searching through past comments from renters at Casa Quetzal on another rental website. Needles to say we were not only extremely disappointed by the robbery but also by the consequent reaction of the owner. RENTERS BE WARNED
Casa Quetzal was a dream! We couldn't have asked for more. The stunning house was a 3 story paradise. We had everything we needed. Although the hill is very steep it was great for the legs and the views were unbeatable. You can get cabs no problem if you don't want to do the walk. Patrice answered all our questions before leaving, and Chole and Frederico we're very kind and extremely helpful. We had Chole cook for us one night and it was absolutely delicious.
The town of Sayulita is very special. The food was incredible, the people are so genuine, the beaches were majestic, and there was no shortage of things to do. Las Marietas islands are definitely worth trip. We saw breaching whales from our boat and the caves and snorkelling were fantastic.
The shopping was great as well. Check out the store Evoke, Artefakto, Revolucion Del Sueno, Ula, and many more.
I would recommend Casa Quetzal to anyone! It was extremely hard to leave but we will definitely be returning to this amazing place.
Thank you so much Patrice for allowing us to experience Sayulita from the comforts of your awesome Casa.
A group of friends and I stayed here for a destination wedding and it was such a wonderful, beautiful place to stay! Its true the hike up is steep (3 hills in total, about 10 minutes) but so incredibly worth it even though we went up and down at least twice per day for 4 days. By no means are we fitness freaks either! We jumped in the salt water pool and enjoyed the view as our congrats for making the climb. With all the great food we ate in sayulita.... It was great to work some of it off anyway! Be aware tho the house is difficult to find and some taxi drivers did not know where it was so be sure to be in touch with the contact person on your arrival.
Overall, a beautiful, clean, safe place to stay and enjoy the amazing views of the coast. I would definitely recommend this to everyone.
Awesome location with an amazing view. Patrice made everything very clear and convenient, only issue was our driver who couldn't make it up the hill. The hill is uber steep and every taxi ride or walk was an adventure (fun adventure), especially with some of the older taxis that can't go up the hills too well (golf cars seem to do fine, and so do legs).
The doors on the second floor are amazing, and make the place this giant open air living room/kitchen.
We wish we had time to use the BBQ upstairs, but we definitely used the hammocks and setup some of our own (3rd floor view is amazing for sunsets - we caught the moonrise and sunset at the same time).
The pool is saltwater, which is great, and a bit chilly, but was nice for the hotter days and for quick cool offs.
Beds were super comfy which is not common in Mexico.
Overall awesome experience, and great location. Far enough way from Sayulita to not hear to rowdy nights, but close enough to be able to walk in less than 10 minutes (or taxi in 5).
Beautiful property on top of a steep hill with gorgeous views of Sayulita, the jungle and beaches. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here in this little slice of paradise. Especially enjoyed pool-side beers, rooftop dinners and breakfasts while taking in the view and fresh air.
The walk to town is about 20 minutes down a steep and rugged cobble-stone road, and a cab ride home is only 50 pesos if you don't want to make the sweaty steep trek back.
Our experience at Casa Quetzal was simply incredible. Enough cannot be said about the view! For our group, a group of six in their late 20s, the hike up to Casa Quetzal was worth it for that view. It's quite the hike, but as soon as you make it to the house and dive straight into that pool you are relaxed and loving every minute of your vacation.
However, I probably would not recommend this house for families with young children. Not only will they find the walk up to the house difficult, but the house does have safety issues in regards to a lack of handrails around the pool and some of the staircases.
For those travelling without children, the house is definitely a great choice for your vacation rental!
We had an amazing time at Casa Quetzal! Patrice's place is beautifully perched atop a steep hill which yields awesome views! Also, we felt like we had our own private oasis as the house is enclosed from the sides with landscaped trees/bushes. It was just the two of us in the house, and so it felt huge! We will be back with friends! Frederico and Soyri were absolutely delightful, too!
The hill was steep, as others have noted, but great exercise. We noticed many people with rented or owned golf carts cruising up and down the hill to circumvent the rigorous climb. This was a bit of an unpleasant surprise as it gave the feel that Sayulita is morphing into the typical Mexican tourist town. Although, I think it is a few years from this yet....
Overall, the trip was amazing. The wireless internet sticks didn't work on our macs, but we just went to town to use the internet cafe ($1 for 30 min).
Thank you, Patrice!
We will be back!

Casa Quetzal was very nice. The view is stunning, the pool refreshing, and the house is comfortable and pleasant. Though steep, we didn't find the walk difficult and would have been fine without the rental car except for the trip to the airport. Our only complaint was the showers which alternated from scalding to quite cool. With the warm weather this was not a real problem. All in all, though I usually like to try new places, I will definitely consider a return trip.
