Tucked away about 13 miles from Hilo (on the way to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park) is a privately owned cattle ranch nestled between snow capped mountains and a smoking Volcano.
This special location offers panoramic views of the Puna Coastline, Mauna Kea & Mauna Loa mountains, and the Pu’u O’o vent. Ohia trees thick with yellow, pink, and salmon colored Lehua blossoms sway gently in the mountain breezes. Ducks swim happily in rock wall ponds while cows, horses, donkeys, goats, sheep, and pet pigs frolic amidst rolling pastures.
As the early morning mists dissipate and the sky is touched with delicate shades of pink, the staff and animals at Pa’ani Ranch & ATV Adventures eagerly greet the day. Visitors are welcomed with Aloha as they arrive and explore the different activities available for their enjoyment.
We offer our guests the opportunity to select from exhilarating Zipline tours, fun and informational Horseback and ATV Tours and for the little ones we have our Lil’ Wrangler Program with Wagon and Pony Rides, Fishing, a Mini Petting Zoo and maybe just for kicks, an impromptu pig or turtle (website hidden)’ani Ranch offers a little something for all age groups and interests, from Keiki (children) to Kupuna (grandparents), for the adventurous to the more laid back individual. We did the ziplining here with our 2 children aged 8 and 11.
We were under some time pressure on the day and could only do it in the (website hidden)'ani were very accommodating and put us on the 9am ziplining tour (despite the fact that we only booked the afternoon before).
We arrived early (at about 8.30am) and they offered to start right away, which we did. The other people who were booked on the 9am tour had not arrived yet (which was fair enough) but this did not prevent us from starting early. I don't believe that this impacted on the others either.
The ziplining staff were friendly, helpful and reassuring. They were also very professional and good at dealing with children. I was not concerned for my or others safety at any stage.
There were 7 ziplines, the last 3 of which were tandem. These were very well suited to children in the 8 - 12 year range. Sure, they are not 100s of feet off the ground (thank goodness!), but they still provide quite a rush for the kids as well as for adults who are not seeking the ultra-extreme.
I would definitely recommend Pa'ani for families.
This review is for the Horseback Riding Tour only.
5 people--3 adults and 2 children, ages 8 and 10--took 5 horses out on a sprawling ranch with lovely views and lots of animals. Our guide, Simon, was very friendly and knowledgeable. He matched the horses to the riders. He taught us how to control their horse with the proper commands and reins' signals. The 2 hour tour was slow and relaxing at times, had great picture opportunities, and we were able to gallop the horses if we wanted up hills and through mud! There were barrel courses set up and wild berries and orchids that we were able to pick. Simon overall was patient and kind, and the ranch owners were wonderful.
In addition to the tour, they offered clean facilities, and snacks and drinks were served after the ride which consisted of rainbow sherbet, chips and soft drinks.
We were staying in the Kopoho Beach Community, and the drive was about 40 minutes.
We definitely recommend this ranch, and would love to return. (My mom had such a blast that she offered that the ranch owners call and stay at her house the next time they visit the SF Bay Area!)
1. Kids 8+ only are able to ride horses.
2. Wear pants!
3. Bring a jacket/windbreaker. It rains unexpectedly!
4. Remember to Tip! :-)
FUN FACT: Pa'ani means PLAY!
ZIPLINES!!!!!!!! The most fun I have ever had on Ziplines! So many to choose from and you can race people too. Great for beginners and people scared of heights. None of them get too high off the ground. The also have horseback riding and ATV tours throughout the 220 acre ranch. Great views, very photogenic, super friendly staff, and a petting zoo for the kids complete with wagon rides and fishing. Smoking volcano, Mauna Kea, and the ocean are just some of the views. You can eat the delicious wild fruit right off the trees.
“Perfect Blend of adventure and friendliness”

We took a horse trailride at Pa'ani Ranch as a highlight of our trip to the big island. We had a wonderful time on a real working ranch that also has numerous long ziplines and ATV tours. We didn't zip or do the ATVs, but the friendliness, cleanliness and order would make us pick them for those activities in a minute.
We were led by Hope and Brandi, two very competent Wahine Paniolos (cowgirls) who have a real passion for their jobs and were very friendly and knowledgeable. The owner and other employees were equally friendly. All very welcoming.
We've ridden horses in many states of the US and this is one of the best settings, with a menagerie of animals to see- llama, wild boar pigs, cows, miniature bulls, miniature horses, and goats. We took my 8 year-old granddaughter and she absolutely had the best time of her vacation. It's an affordable 1.5 hour ride on horses that are calm and compliant (although if you want to run, better to take one of the rides early in the day).
“Awesome experience provided by caring staff”

Celebrated our son's 3-year-old birthday at Pa`ani Ranch. I bought the Lil Wrangler package. Awesome day! Fishing, petting zoo (llama, goats, rabbits, donkeys, sheep), horseback ride, wagon ride, and barrel ride. They also had a venue for us to have our party. The staff was really friendly and made sure we had a great experience. I HIGHLY recommend this place. They also have ATV rides and zip lines for the adults.
Amazing ATV experience!!! Friendly staff, great tour guide (James), and an experience you can't get anywhere else. It's on a 220 acre of land with horses, cows, lamas, goats, etc. They give you a chance to interact with the animals even did a little fishing. Great fun at a great value. Check them out! They also have Zipline as well.
My parents and I stayed in the house for three nights as we explored Volcano National Park. We couldn't have found a better place to stay: it was very clean, welcoming, and spacious, and we felt right at home. The house is located very close to the park (5 minute drive).
After our long hikes in the park, we really looked forward to relaxing in the house. Highly recommended!
I have spent two days at Hale Palila and this place is amazing.
The location is great, only 3 minutes away from the Volcano National park by car and in a nice jungle-like setting close to the Golf course. This architect designed house was refurbished recently and my girlfriend and I were actually some of the first to book the place. Everything was nice and clean and perfect. The kitchen was convenient. The fireplace was nice but there were only a few wood logs and the weather was rainy so we run out of dry wood quite early.
All in all a very pleasant stay and I totally recommend this place.
We had a great stay at Hale Pikake. It was perfect for myself and two friends, because we each had a separate bedroom. The host left the lights on for us, which was very nice for our late arrival. We were very close to Volcano National Park.

Hostess was super easy to connect with! Although the heat was off when we arrived it didn't take long to warm up. Great value for a family looking to explore volcano national park!
Great little get away in the rain forest. Very close to the National Park which made visiting the park nice as we stretched it out over a couple days. Hot Tubbing in the rain was awesome.
This was our first airbnb experience and we could not be any happier. We chose this house because it was located very close to Hawaii Volcano National Park. The house was perfect for a family of 4 and we had ample room to spread out and make ourselves comfortable. Thomas was very personable and we enjoyed his pristine property. We loved having the kitchen to cook meals and we packed a picnic using one of the coolers. There were lots of magazines in the house to find out activities to check out - but most of all we enjoyed just hanging out after a long day driving around. There is a big sign outside of the house so it is easy to find. The nights are full of the frogs chirping but we enjoyed it. Thank you for having us! We would recommend this house to our friends and family! Aloha, The Goodgame Ohana
Great location to see the volcanoes.... The tropical garden is full of orchids and other exotic flowers, it's a quiet, idyllic location. We loved our stay!
We loved this magical little spot. The kitchen is well set up for cooking your own meals. We loved the CDs, all the music really goes with the ambiance. Bed is super comfortable. We were given yummy papayas with lime for breakfast the next day. The place feels very private even though you are on the same property as the owners.
This is definitely the most ideal place for couples going honeymoon in Hawaii! The elegant decorations created a romantic atmosphere, and the perfect album selections gave us very relax background musics.
If you want to go hiking in the volcano national park, it's only 5 to 10 minutes drive from this lodge to the visitor center, steam vents, Volcano House, and Jaggar Museum. The convenience of location gave us more leisure time to enjoy the amazing attractions in the national park and had no worry for driving back to the accommodation at night. If you want to spend several days to explore the South or the West South areas of Big Island, Boy and Debra's Place will be a good choice to stay!
