New places and a love for travel have always been a way of life for me. Because of my Dad's career we moved around quite a bit. By the time I was 18 our family had moved 8 times between 4 states and 7 cities.
My Dad is from the great state of Maine, Skowhegan to be exact. The youngest of 13 siblings, a life long Eagle Scout, a Captain in the Marine Corps. The first person in his family to graduate from college he earned a full scholarship from the University of Maine. He served in Vietnam and then worked 37 years as an executive for Shell Oil Company. He is and has been an endless example of love, patience and kindness. My best friends like to refer to him as "a living saint" and it's true.
My mother was born and raised in post-war Japan. Just 17 when she left her family to move to California, she worked many odd day jobs all at once, a short-order cook, a nanny, a florist sorting carnations. All the while she somehow took classes at night to improve her English. Always a natural at DIY, if she saw something beautiful in a shop that she wanted but couldn't afford she would go home and figure out how to make it herself. She had a knack for making all kinds of things: clothes, crafts, a killer lasagna - as well as life-long friends. A stickler for quality, she preached the merits of mindfulness in everything, especially the simple things, like making your bed everyday, even that was an opportunity for artistic expression. Annoying as it was back then, I eventually learned to love and appreciate (and finally apply) all that my mother taught me. My mom was seriously skilled at creating beauty from scratch, especially in the home.
Being "the apple that didn't fall far" I love meeting new people and creating beauty and comfort where I can. I am pretty positive this love for beauty and others comes directly from my parents.
Now firmly rooted in Austin TX since 2008, I live happily with my husband and our twin boys and we have no plans of moving anytime soon. We still love to travel but stay pretty busy at home too.
Chasing after two 6yr olds and keeping up with all the new happenings around Austin is a full time job in itself.
