The Space

Stay at the former Mansion of the Mayor of Brooklyn. This unique brownstone has gorgeous original details, high ceilings, hardwood floors, exposed brick, parquet floors, etc. As a mansion, this house is double the width of the normal brownstone buildings you will find in Brooklyn.

This listing is a light-filled, quiet, large private "suite" in on the top floor (3rd floor). By "suite", we mean that a lockable door separates your bedroom and private bathroom from the rest of the apartment. You can also rent both suites: the other one is listed here:

Share the living room and kitchen with another guest (or not, if it's not booked). We are always around if you need anything. We can lend your kids our toys, books, etc. We provide hotel quality amenities: towels, shampoo and conditioner, soap, hair dryer, umbrellas, guide books, maps, etc. Weekly professional cleaning service is provided at no charge.

We're located in a great section of the neighborhood of Fort Greene! You can check out the AirBnB guide to the neighborhood or (website hidden) it. Watch out for other listings on the fringe of the neighborhood, or too close to the Barclay Center. Ft. Greene is an exciting neighborhood with plenty to do, but it's also quiet and feels like a real neighborhood. Close by is Fort Greene park, the famous Brooklyn Flea market, a weekend farmer's market, the second largest subway hub in New York City, the Barclay Center, the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), and of course restaurants, cafes and bars. Just 15 minutes from Manhattan! Also, CitiBike bike sharing has bikes for rent every few blocks in a large part of Brooklyn and Manhattan.

We have WiFi or wired internet. The living room has a flat screen TV with Netflix, Hulu Plus (for viewing TV shows), and AppleTV. You can also watch a selection of hundreds of movies for both kids and grown-ups stored on our media server, most with subtitles in several languages. These movies can be seen on the TV or streamed to your iOS or Android device.

Our calendar is always up-to-date, so feel free to book any dates that show available.

We look forward to hosting you!

The Neighborhood

Our neighborhood, Fort Greene, is very close to Manhattan (we are just two blocks from a subway station), but feels much more comfortable. It's quiet and spacious, with tree-lined blocks filled with historic "brownstone" houses from the 19th century.

There is a beautiful park designed by the same people who designed Central Park, a local farmers market, a famous flea market, and plenty of cafes, restaurants, and fancy food stores. You can search online, as there have been many articles written about our neighborhood. Also, AirBnB has neighborhood guides you can look at.

Getting around

As for transportation, you can get to Manhattan very easily via subway. We are two blocks from the "C" train, and 7 or 8 blocks from the 2nd largest subway hub (after Grand Central) in the city, where many lines run. Depending on where you are going, and which line you need to take, it will take you 15-25 minutes to get anywhere south of 14th street, including the Financial District, SoHo, Tribeca, the Lower East Side, the Village, etc. To get to midtown is another 10 minutes.

After 10pm or so, I usually take a taxi, not so much because of safety concerns, but rather because the trains run infrequently and irregularly late at night. From below 14th st, it will cost about $15, more from midtown.

  • My daughter and I stayed at the Mayor's Mansion for two lovely nights at the end of a six day trip to New York. We loved everything about it. To start, Leo was quick to reply to our request to stay, and further details we inquired about.
The beautiful, historic brownstone is located in a friendly neighbourhood with tree-lined streets. The location is superb. The house is located within minutes of 2 subway lines making it very accessible to Manhatten. There are many restaurants, coffee shops, bookstores, groceries just around the corner. Claudia has written an extremely helpful guide complete with a 20 minute walking tour that we enjoyed! The apartment was as beautiful and stylish as the photos reveal. Light streams in through the windows making the apartment bright and fresh. It was very clean and the kitchen was well stocked with amenities. The apartment is set so that each bedroom and private bath are neatly separated by the stairs and common space. We did not hear or see the other guest. On the other hand, it is a great set up for a family to use the whole space! Also, each room has an air conditioner which was a relief as the temperatures in NY were high in June.
We had a wonderful experience at the Mayor's Mansion thanks to our thoughtful hosts, Claudia and Leo.

  • We had a great stay at Mayor's mansion. The flat is really nice and lots of room. Our bedroom was really clean and pleasant. Claudia and Leo are perfect hosts. They made a really nice list of things to do, restaurants and bars around the area. The neighbourhood is really nice too. You can relax in Brooklyn and at the same time you have access to the Underground and reach really quickly Manhattan. We strongly recommend.

  • Claudia and Leo were very welcoming and had taken the time to create a fantastic walking tour of the lovely chilled neighborhood. It was great to stay in a beautifully designed appartment in an authentic brownstone.

Access to subways, parks and Manhattan was all incredibly easy.

  • We had such a lovely stay at the Mayors Mansion. With every question I had Claudia and Leo were quick to reply back. The place was clean and very welcoming on such a great tree lined street. The neighborhood was just as fabulous. There were so many great places to eat and hang out we could only fit a few in for our short stay. The trains were easy to find and having the Barclay station a few blocks away made in very convenient.
We had gotten in really early and were not able to check in yet but were able to get the keys easy enough and leave our bags so we could start exploring right away. There was another person staying in the garden room but we never saw them. I can't wait to come back and I will definitely chose this place to stay.

  • The Mayor's Mansion is wonderful. The space is just as charming as the pictures and an incredible value for a stay in Fort Greene. Claudia provided all the information we needed and easy access to get the keys, even though they were out of town. There was another couple in the space at the same time, and we never saw them once, or even heard a peep. So it felt very private! The wonderful linens, soaps/shampoo, etc. are a very nice touch. And the bathroom in the Carlton Suite is spotless with very nice and new finishes. We felt like we were in a boutique hotel without the high price tag. The art and attention to design detail is also fun to enjoy.

The neighborhood is fantastic and has lots of great bars/restaurants and is beautiful to walk around. We highly recommend staying at the Mayor's Mansion - and it would be perfect for a family or two couples traveling together!

  • Great location. Part of a leafy, green Brooklyn. Everything in apartment as advertised. High ceilings. It is great for someone looking for quiet. Close to a lot of the nice restaurants on Fulton (website hidden) (email hidden) that was delicious.

  • The space is beautiful and convenient for exploring Brooklyn and Manhattan. Leo welcomed us and provided a helpful neighborhood guide he and Claudia wrote. The Fort Greene neighborhood is a charming and eclectic area with many restaurants and markets.
We visit New York often to visit our son who lives in Brooklyn and we believe we have found our new home away from home.
Thanks for sharing your comfortable space with us, Leo and Claudia.

  • We have just spent a lovely week at the mayor' mansion. We shared the upper floor with our friends and the 4 of us thoroughly enjoyed the apartments and shared kitchen and living room. The rooms were elegant, cosy, light and spacious. The beds were very comfortable and there was hardly any noise from the street below. The neighboorhood has everything you want and the subway to Manhattan is just a short walk away. Thank you Claudia and Leo for a wonderful week. We hope we will be back some time!

  • Staying in the Major's Mansion was absolutely fabulous! We loved the feeling of coming home after days of exploring NYC!! Claudia (email hidden) who creates a great atmospfere and makes sure all the basics a guest needs are there. A comfortable bed, closet space so you don't need to live out of your suitcase and amenities you just wanna bring home (unfortunately not possible after too much shopping). Also the neighborhood is great (public transportation, parks, restaurants)! Defintely recommendable!!!

  • The suite was very nice and spacious. There were two bedrooms, each with a private bath and the kitchen and living room were common space. The bathroom in our bedroom needs a shelf to put toiletries on. The street noise traveled up to the room on the third floor. The other bedroom may have been quieter, but we didn't have a chance to see it because it was occupied. We did like the location very much. Leo and Claudia were responsive to our needs and requests. I would recommend Mayor's Mansion to others.
