About this listing
Large, light-filled suite in the former mansion of Brooklyn's mayor with hotel quality amenities. 2 blocks from the subway, 15 minutes to Manhattan. A relaxing, artsy neighborhood (Fort Greene) with all the amenities you would want. Read our reviews!
Stay at the former Mansion of the Mayor of Brooklyn. This unique brownstone has gorgeous original details, high ceilings, hardwood floors, exposed brick, parquet floors, etc. As a mansion, this house is double the width of the normal brownstone buildings you will find in Brooklyn.
This listing is a light-filled, quiet, large private "suite" in on the top floor (3rd floor - if you have trouble with stairs, please note: no elevator). By "suite", we mean that a lockable door separates your bedroom and private bathroom from the rest of the apartment. You can also rent both suites: the other one is listed here: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1762978
Share the living room and kitchen with another guest (or not, if it's not booked). We are always around if you need anything. We can lend your kids our toys, books, etc. We provide hotel quality amenities: towels, shampoo and conditioner, soap, hair dryer, umbrellas, guide books, maps, etc. Weekly professional cleaning service is provided at no additional charge.
We're located in a great section of the neighborhood of Fort Greene! You can check out the AirBnB guide to the neighborhood or (website hidden) it. Watch out for other listings on the fringe of the neighborhood, or too close to the Barclay Center. Ft. Greene is an exciting neighborhood with plenty to do, but it's also quiet and feels like a real neighborhood. Close by is Fort Greene park, the famous Brooklyn Flea market, a weekend farmer's market, the second largest subway hub in New York City, the Barclay Center, the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), and of course restaurants, cafes and bars. Just 15 minutes from Manhattan! Also, CitiBike bike sharing has bikes for rent every few blocks in a large part of Brooklyn and Manhattan.
We have WiFi or wired internet. The living room has a flat screen TV with Netflix, Hulu Plus (for viewing TV shows), and AppleTV. You can also watch a selection of hundreds of movies for both kids and grown-ups stored on our media server, most with subtitles in several languages. These movies can be seen on the TV or streamed to your iOS or Android device.
Our calendar is always up-to-date, so feel free to book any dates that show available.
We look forward to hosting you!
Guests have exclusive use of their suite, and shared use of the living room and kitchen.
Interaction with Guests
We respect your privacy, and you will never have to see us if you don't want to, but we're always around if you have questions or need help.
Our neighborhood, Fort Greene, is very close to Manhattan (we are just two blocks from a subway station), but feels much more comfortable. It's quiet and spacious, with tree-lined blocks filled with historic "brownstone" houses from the 19th century.
There is a beautiful park designed by the same people who designed Central Park, a local farmers market, a famous flea market, and plenty of cafes, restaurants, and fancy food stores. You can search online, as there have been many articles written about our neighborhood. Also, AirBnB has neighborhood guides you can look at.
As for transportation, you can get to Manhattan very easily via subway. We are two blocks from the "C" train, and 7 or 8 blocks from the 2nd largest subway hub (after Grand Central) in the city, where many lines run. Depending on where you are going, and which line you need to take, it will take you 15-25 minutes to get anywhere south of 14th street, including the Financial District, SoHo, Tribeca, the Lower East Side, the Village, etc. To get to midtown is another 10 minutes.
After 10pm or so, I usually take a taxi, not so much because of safety concerns, but rather because the trains run infrequently and irregularly late at night. From below 14th st, it will cost about $15, more from midtown.
We are happy to welcome you into our family home! As described in the listing, you have your own suite with complete privacy in your bedroom and bathroom. But please be respectful of your neighbor (if they other suite is also rented) when in the shared spaces (the living room, office, and kitchen). Also, please note that we live on the lower floors. Our children run up and down the stairs, though they go to sleep relatively early. You might also run into one of our cats (Snuggles and Bug) in the hallway.
We strive to give you a hotel-like experience with the amenities, professionalism, and cleanliness you'd expect from an upscale hotel, but please remember this is also our home. So...
1) No Guests
Since we share the common hallway, we want to make sure we know everyone we might run into!
2) Keep the noise to a respectful level at night for our family and neighbors.
3) No smoking indoors, please.
Otherwise, have fun...explore...enjoy!
Hello, Claudia and Leo live in Brooklyn in an historic brownstone mansion, once home to the Mayor of Brooklyn. We have two children, aged 5 and 7. We live on the bottom two floors and rent / airBnB the top two. We have backpacked all over the world (when we were younger) and still love to travel, to meet fellow travelers, and to share our love of all things Brooklyn and New York. We look forward to meeting you!
