About this listing
For a video of the house, put in my name, Joe DeCola at that famous you tube joint. It does not show the recent total renovation of the kitchen, nor new hot water system. Let me know of any questions you might have. You'll love the house.
Just a fifteen minute walk to the "Jardin"(center of town), this great house in Atascadero has the charm of a country house, a spectacular view of Centro, plus extensive gardens and a great pool.
A unique, luxurious and comfortable vacation home filled with light, warmth, hospitality and privacy.
Bright, three-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath home with two fireplaces, a luxurious heated pool (private enough for skinny dipping!), two terraces and an inviting garden where orange and pomegranate trees and a rainbow of blooms invite you in.
Fully furnished, down to the cable tv, high speed internet for your laptop, VCR, telephone, dishwasher and microwave, it looks out on the pool, the sweet sleepy town of San Miguel and the mountains off in the distance.

Perched on a hillside in the exclusive residential area of El Atascadero, you'll find Casita del Sol. After you enter the unassuming gate and walk across the pretty entry garden (grass, flowers, fruit trees) to the antique door into the compact brick bungalow, you are suddenly surprised by the spacious living/dining room, new kitchen, with it's cathedral ceiling and the bright, cheerful interior graced by equipale furniture and a wood-burning fireplace.
Through the picture windows and doors, you can enjoy forever views of 180 degrees. The terrace that runs the full length of the living/dining room overlooks the backyard garden and pool area. A table and chairs provide a great place for sundowner drinks as well as an al fresco breakfast or lunch. The new kitchen is nicely equipped granite countertops, with large and small appliances, and a pantry. There is also a half-bath for guests on this level.
You descend to the lower level via the unusual wood staircase. The master bedroom, with king bed, fireplace and en suite bath enjoys a view of the pool. The second bedroom has a queen bed, comfortable sitting area and en suite bath. Both bedrooms have a bank of closets.
Across the pool patio with its relaxing recliners, is a twin-bedded third bedroom. The bath that adjoins it also serves as a changing room for pool guests. The free-form pool is kept warm by a gas-fired furnace, and is sparkling clean, thanks to a poolman who comes several times a week.
The maid, Chila, and the gardener Trini, each come Monday, Wednesday and Friday to cater to your needs. There is also a professional manager on call, if you should need any repairs. There is off street parking, should you arrive via car
The home is furnished with many amenities: SIRIUS satellite radio with 100 commercial-free stations, cable TV, VCR, wireless high speed internet connection (for your laptop), automatic washer, chaise lounge chairs, massage table, electric mattress pad warmers as well as down comforters on all beds.
Three bedrooms, 3.5 baths, heated pool, flowered gardens, spectacular views
Atascadero, the neighborhood just above the center of San MIguel is a quiet, tranquil place.
While some prefer the hurly-burly of the downtown, it's gotten a bit too noisy for some, too congested, and too touristy. The air, the noise level and the views from Atascadero are ideal. You'll appreciate being able to walk downhill along shady cobblestoned streets to be in The Jardin, the main plaza, in 12- 15 minutes. Walking back up is a good daily cardio, but when you have groceries, etc., you might appreciate the easily found 35 peso taxi (about US$2.30)
Radio taxis come to the house and take you anywhere in town for US$3.00. As soon as you can, get a copy of Atencioñ, the weekly English/Spanish SanMIguel newspaper for listings of the events of the upcoming week, restaurants, etc....you can find a copy from one of the news dealers on the main plaza, The Jardin, or at most shops, restaurants popular with Gringos.
Radio Taxis called to the house Porton #9, (see phone numbers near house phones) cost Peso$50...street hailed taxis Peso$35-40...both will take you anywhere in town for that amount.
"Mare Nostrum" Umaran 56, my friend Roderick said it best:
"This is a small family run restaurant that has extraordinarily good food at more than reasonable prices. If you are in a hurry, don't go. All the pasta is hand made and all ingredients are fresh. The kitchen is tiny, so when the place is crowded your food order can take some time. Again, don't go if you're in a hurry. Do go if you love amazing food with great flavors. "
really excellent cooking.Cook is Sardinian...creative..vivid excellent food.
"Berlin" Umaran 19, friendly bar..(good martinis) check out their Fish with a Potato Crust..mmmm
"Hecho en Mexico" Ancha de San Antonio 8, good food..
I like it because I can order a big salad and know the ingredients have been washed properly. reliable. not gourmet...but reliable good food. indoor or outdoor patio..nice for lunch..classic mexican dishes, burgers, soups, fish; good service, reasonable prices.
"Aguamiel" Pipila 3A | San Antonio neighborhood. Excellent creative interesting cooking. menu varies. FRESH ingredients. first rate cooking..suggest reservations (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)
"Cafe Muro" Loreto 10B.
Absolute BEST breakfast place in SanMIguel
home baked rolls, great eggs and sausage(chorizo); good for lunch too (chicken with mole!)
TUESDAY MARKET!... a few blocks walk from you..a huge amazing open air market (under tarps--sun!) ..best time to go is about ten or eleven...See the people, the amazing variety of goods on display and HAVE LUNCH! Tacos, Gorditas, Huaraches! (sandal-sole shaped tortillas heaped with your choice of mushrooms, cheese, etc.) good food..
"Cafe San Augustin" .. 21 San Francisco. CHURROS AND HOT CHOCOLATE.....
lovely evening stop ..near the Jardin, across from San Francisco church. three kinds of hot chocolate: Spanish, French, Mexican, and the CHURROS! (doughnuts) are fabulous..dunked or plain.
La Sirena Gorda, Barranca, nice walk down from the house. Great FreshGinger Margaritas.. Steamed Artichokes, Fish Tacos, Octopus!. Friendly bartenders...ask them to "walk" you through some Mezcals...great way to learn about them...
La Gruta..road to Dolores. Hot Springs..great for an afternoon soak.. best on weekdays (crowded weekends) ...not a fancy, schmancy "elegant" spa, clean, relaxing.. good little restaurant, their chicken mole makes a nice (URL HIDDEN) sure to go into the "cave", and stand as long as you can under the hot water pouring out of the earth from the "chorro" an overhead spout.mmmm..
Other Things to Note
please bring comfortable walking shoes..the cobblestoned streets of San MIguel require them.
There's no Gay bar in SanMiguel...they've tried to open them, but they become too popular with the straight folks. Friday evenings at "Berlin" Bar and "Tapas" bring like minded gay and lesbian folks together.
My favorite bar in town is just down the hill, "La Sirena Gorda" (the fat mermaid)...awesome fish tacos, steamed artichokes and martinis made with fresh grated ginger...
no smoking in the house. gas for pool heating at renter's expense unless booked for weekend with heated pool, tips for staff suggested ($20 to housekeeper, gardener, and pool boy each per each week or less) Staff comes Monday Wednesday and Friday mornings. The Gardener arrives about 8 AM and Chila, the Housekeeper at about 9...they're both there until noon or so. Please ask about pets and about children 2-12 (pool safety, etc.)
