The Space

Just a fifteen minute walk to the Jardin(center of town), this great house in Atascadero has the charm of a country house, a spectacular view of Centro, plus extensive gardens and a great pool.

A unique, luxurious and comfortable vacation home filled with light, warmth, hospitality and privacy.

Bright, three-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath home with two fireplaces, a luxurious heated pool (private enough for skinny dipping!), two terraces and an inviting garden where orange and pomegranate trees and a rainbow of blooms invite you in.

Fully furnished, down to the cable tv, high speed internet for your laptop, VCR, telephone and microwave, it looks out on the pool, the sweet sleepy town of San Miguel and the mountains off in the distance.

Perched on a hillside in the exclusive residential area of El Atascadero, you'll find Casita del Sol. After you enter the unassuming gate and walk across the pretty entry garden (grass, flowers, fruit trees) to the antique door into the compact brick bungalow, you are suddenly surprised by the spacious living/dining room with it's cathedral ceiling and the bright, cheerful interior graced by equipale furniture and a wood-burning fireplace.
Through the picture windows and doors, you can enjoy forever views of 180 degrees. The terrace that runs the full length of the living/dining room overlooks the backyard garden and pool area. A table and chairs provide a great place for sundowner drinks as well as an al fresco breakfast or lunch. The kitchen is nicely equipped with large and small appliances, and a pantry. There is also a half-bath for guests on this level.
You descend to the lower level via the unusual wood staircase. The master bedroom, with king bed, fireplace and en suite bath enjoys a view of the pool. The second bedroom has a queen bed, comfortable sitting area and en suite bath. Both bedrooms have a bank of closets.
Across the pool patio with its relaxing recliners, is a twin-bedded third bedroom. The bath that adjoins it also serves as a changing room for pool guests. The free-form pool is kept warm by a gas-fired furnace, and is sparkling clean, thanks to a poolman who comes several times a week.

The maid, Chila, and the gardener Trini, each come Monday, Wednesday and Friday to cater to your needs. There is also a professional manager on call, if you should need any repairs. There is off street parking, should you arrive via car
The home is furnished with many amenities: SIRIUS satellite radio with 100 commercial-free stations, cable TV, VCR, wireless high speed internet connection (for your laptop), automatic washer, chaise lounge chairs, massage table, electric mattress pad warmers as well as down comforters on all beds.

  • The house is nice but needs a little update in certain things. Joe is a great host he answers really quickly.
We had a little trouble with the shower in the 2 bathroom ( couldn't use it at all) and the water wasn't hot. We had to change the batteries on the water heater.
Otherwise really enjoyed our stay. But didn't spend lot of time in the house.

  • Joe is a very attentive and helpful host, and is almost maternal in making sure you arrive safely at his house. The house is beyond expectations. The gardens are beautiful, with flowers and fruits every where, even in December! I cannot imagine what it looks like in the spring. The location is a very easy walk into town if one is accustomed to walking (e.g., from New York, Chicago, and other "pedestrian cities") - and yet it is up on a quiet hill. The yard is secluded is gives the feeling of being alone in a quiet paradise. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking. It is also a breeze to get around town in a taxi. San Miguel is magical. We also had a wonderful tour with Coyote Canyon out to the pyramids. It was informative and a beautiful drive. I highly recommend Joe's paradise!

    Response from Joe:

Thank you so much, Heather for your review and, of course, for your stay. It was great having you as a guest and giving you a break from mid-winter Chicago! Come back soon...the garden and the hummingbirds will be waiting for you.

  • joe,
I will like to add my opinion of this house, first I talk to Chila that we need a maid for sunday and we paid the maid, and also to who we have to paid the tip if Chila wasen't in San Miguel she left Saturday
Also, there was so little water to shower and there was no hot water, also we have problems with the pipe of the shower. However this is my opinion of the house we have so many problems

    Response from Joe:

I regret that you had hot water problems, Luis. It is a Demand Hot Water System and when several people (there were six of you) are trying to take showers at once, it needs time to recover. I also regret the condition in which you left the house.

  • We spent a magical week in San Miguel and loved staying at Joe's home. It had the feel of a real Mexican home and comforts of home. The pool and outdoor space was worth being just a short walk from Centro, and after a busy day walking the crowded streets of San Miguel it was a comfort to sit quietly on the patio and watch the sunset.
The walk to centro is about 10 minutes, but the cobbled roads can be precarious if you are older or not a good walker. We always cabbed it home - it was only $3-4 and well worth it. I recommend getting the pool heated, we still used it, but it was chilly!
Also, Joe's staff is super helpful. They went out of their way to make us feel at home.

  • Spent 3 nights at the house with 4 other friends. The house is absolutely gorgeous with the gardens and the views. The surrounding area is really fun to walk through among the lovely old homes. All of the rooms were comfortable and clean. We thoroughly enjoyed the pool and outdoor lounge area. The staff were very friendly and sweet as well. Joe was extremely responsive to messages while planning the trip which made it all easier.
Overall, we had a lovely time and would love to go back there again for a little longer soon :)

  • It was nice to have Joe welcoming us to guests in his house. Once we stepped in and saw the view to the town, which was stunning especially during the sunset, we were happy to have rented the house.
The house was well equipped with a full kitchen and a homey living room. The room division worked well, while the bedrooms were on the different floor with the kitchen and the living room. It was also nice to have own bathroom next to every bedroom.
The garden was beautiful and very well taken care of. There were nice places to relax. The best thing on the garden was the heated pool, which was large enough for playing and swimming.
The size of the house was large enough for 5-6 people and small enough to feel ourselves like we were at home during our vacation. When needed, one could relax and have some quality time alone in the house.
The location of the house was very good. On the hill, to have a great view to town but still by walking distant from the town. The taxis were cheap to take back to house if you were too tired to walk back to hill. The Tuesday market near by was worth of visiting to have a touch on local people.
Joe and his maid, gardener and a pool boy quaranteed us a relaxing vacation in this beautiful house. Whenever needed, we could contact him and he and his housestaff made them bests for us to enjoy our time in San Miguel del Allende.

  • Joe's house is exactly as described. Beautiful, charming, functional and a wonderful place to call "home" in San Miguel de Allende. My wife and I recently returned from a delicious 5 weeks at Casita del Sol and would happily return if the opportunity presented.
