Walking distance to the French Quarter and the music heaven of Frenchman Street, this unique, historic building was built in the 1870's as the old Prohibition Hall. Located in the Marigny close to many cafes, restaurants and arguably the best breakfast/bakery in all of New Orleans, Cake Café where you can get a delicious breakfast with shrimp, grits, and the best biscuit and home made jam.

Open style kitchen with 8-foot copper bar and large open living room. Hard wood floors, spacious tall ceilings throughout the apartment. Facing southwest, the golden light filters through the curtains all day. The shared outdoor patio has a garden & dining.

Amenities include central A/C, W/D, high-speed wireless internet, fully stocked kitchen with spices and cookware, outdoor patio area, easy on-street parking, spring water delivered. No TV, but Roku media player projecter (4x6 foot screen) has lots of channels including Hulu plus, Netflixs, Youtube, and numerous other tv channels.

The Marigny is a very desirable place to stay in New Orleans because it's so charming, walkable and much closer to the French Quarter than the Garden district. There are also dozens of restaurants, bars, music clubs, coffee shops and event spaces within an 8 block radius from my house you could just spend your whole vacation close and feel like you saw and did a lot!

Here’s link to a map with all of the recommended locations and more:

From my house, the best walking streets are Spain St. to Royal St. It’s easy to get lost in the Marigny, so please take one of the maps that is in the guest room. Cabs are cheap around $7 to get to the Quarter. You can even get the bicycle taxis to take you home.

Buying liquor- all corner stores and gas stations sell liquor. The closest are: Schiros on Royal and St. Roch (4 blocks); Esplanade & Decatur (8 blocks).

Food Shopping. The New Orleans Food Coop is right behind my building with very affordable local produce. Also, Mardi Gras zone on Royal and Port st is open 24 hours a day with an eclectic grocery selection, deli and pizza.

Bars, some of my favs:
Mimis in the Marigny on Royal and Franklin (especially upstairs)
DBA on Frenchman
Spotted Cat on Frenchman

Cafes/ restaurants
Coffee: Cafe Niro on Mandeville and Burgundy (2 blocks); the Orange Couch on Royal and Mandeville (4 blocks)
Breakfast: Cake Café on Spain and Charters (3 blocks). Satsumas on Dauphine st. (12 blocks)
Ruby Slipper on Burgundy (8 blocks)
Affordable New Orleans cuisine: Coups on Decatur.
On Frenchman street you have plenty of restaurants, bars, coffee to keep you very occupied and happy. Of course, there is always venturing deeper into the French Quarter.

I have many more recommendations, and will be happy to give them upon request.

  • Alicia's apartment is located in the heart of the Marigny, which has quickly become my favorite NOLA neighborhood, with it's unpretentious neighborhood bars, brightly colored homes, and walkable streets. A leisurely walk to the Quarter or Bywater (for dining at Elizabeth's, of course) we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Bagira is a sweetie. His presence helped make missing our own furry kids a little less painful.

    Overall would recommend.

  • My family and I had a perfect long weekend at Alicia's home. Three adult couples and one toddler felt completely at home! We appreciated Alicia's very clear house rules, and she was very helpful in suggesting neighborhood joints for great food and drinks, as well as allowing us to store our bags there on our final day before leaving for our flight. The apartment is in a fantastic neighborhood - Frenchmen Street, the French Quarter, and everything in Marigny and Bywater are within walking distance. A great food co-op is literally steps from the front door. Bagira the cat is delightful. Our only feedback would be that the refrigerator was quite cluttered, so we couldn't use it much, but this is New Orleans - we ate out for every meal anyway! The rooms on the street can be a bit loud at night, but we are city folk and this wasn't a problem for us. We had a terrific time and would love to be back some day.

  • My group of 5 had a great time and are glad to have rented Alicia's house. With two couples and a single, we each had our own bedroom and two full baths, and a half bath in the 3rd room. Excellent, excellent location! I cannot stress this enough, we did almost everything by foot!

The beds were comfortable, it was clean and towels and shower items were provided.

Alicia was at the house upon our arrival, was very friendly and even gave us some tips and suggestions. I'd rent the house again.

Minor complaint was the water pressure in the shower and mildew smell in the towels. But by no means a deterrent for any of us!

  • Alicia's place could not have worked out better for our group. It's such a unique, open-spaced apartment with plenty of room. (I believe she said it used to be an old firehouse?) Alicia herself was just lovely and very helpful with inside tips for New Orleans and Jazz Fest, the main reason for our stay. There's a nice, food co-op grocery store around the corner and it's just a short walk to Frenchmen street in the Quarter, which is where we wound up going most nights. We used some of the kitchen utensils and cooking gear for breakfast one day, which is just really awesome to have on hand. (Spices and all!)

Bagira the cat was around some, he goes in and out as he wants and is friendly but also kept his distance. (Really cute, sweet kitty, though! :)

Overall, I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this place to stay when visiting the Big Easy! Hopefully I'll find myself back down there one day.

  • This apartment was great. There were 7 of us (two couples, three singles) and it accommodated us amply. We loved having a kitchen (and a full market next door), the Roku projector, the hot tub, and of course Bagira. The Marigny is a very cool neighborhood, and we were able to walk to the French Quarter when we wanted some ridiculousness without feeling trapped there. Highly recommended.

  • Nice, hip, bohemian pad in the heart of a great neighborhood.

  • Beautiful apt in good location. Very close to Royal Street and Frenchmen Street. 20mn walk from French quarter.
We had a very pleasant stay, three adult couples were very comfortable in this stylish apartment.
It contains all the facilities and utensils you need (and a lot of spices in the kitchen). It also contains the lovely cat Bagera (free hugs).
Alicia is the perfect host and gave us all the information needed.
I would have no hesitation in recommending this apartment.
Our first trip to New Orleans and one we will never forget.

About
I am an avid gardener, cook, dancer and yoga instructor. I lived in New Orleans off and on for 12 years and this apartment for 8 years. I'm pleased to be able to open up my home and welcome people to the joys of New Orleans. I'm from Colorado where I grew up on a ranch, where I learned my cooking and gardening skills. I've worked in food social justice world for 6 years in New Orleans, helping create fresh produce markets, small urban farms and gardens, and cooking and food education programs aimed at getting people to grow, buy and eat local, fresh, healthy food. I've practiced yoga for 18 years, and studied at the Jivamukti school in NYC and with many yogis in California. I socially dance salsa, lindy hop, Charleston, balboa, swing, and much more! Any of my skill sets are for hire while you stay in my house: private dance classes, yoga sessions, cooking lessons, meals both traditional and non-New Orleans, running errands, pick up and drop off form the airport and around town.
