Gilles' apartment is beautifully decorated, and right in the middle of the action in Strasbourg. We had a delightful stay there.
The apartment overlooks the Place Gutenberg, and the location is perfect for exploring the city. The disadvantage of any city centre location is noise. The place was clean. The wifi was excellent. Parking is available in public car parks. The windows have blinds fitted, but as the windows open inwards, it is hard to both have the windows open and exclude light. There are slatted wooden shutters. The kitchen has a dishwasher, but no washing machine. There is a fridge with an ice-making compartment. It couldn't cope with the heatwave, and kept freezing drinks in the main body. The bedroom at the back is away from the noise. It has a comfortable king-size bed, with square pillows and sufficient storage. The double 'patio' doors open onto a fully-enclosed balcony with fixed windows, which restricted ventilation. The bedroom at the front is set up for children, with beds suitable for adults, though my 17-year complained his was uncomfortable. For storage, my teenagers used the low table fixed across the centre of the room, which is intended as a play table for children. I'm not sure what a family would do if their children wanted to use it to play as there are no cupboards. The bathroom is problematic. There is a step up to the toilet, which is pretty hazardous at night. The floor and shower are tiled in small square white tiles, which create dirt traps since there is so much grouting. The ceiling, walls, blind and door are all black, which is rather oppressive. The only mirror in the apartment is in this dark bathroom. The shower is powerful, but it is not possible to shower without soaking the bathmat. Storage is limited to the worksurface. There is a powerful hairdryer. The external handle on the bathroom door kept falling off – I removed it before it broke someone's toes. Strasbourg has experienced two months of heatwave. The apartment was stifling; there was no fan. We asked for fans, and were provided with one. It was excellent, but the apartment needs three, since the layout of the second bedroom means that it needs two if there is more than one person sleeping there. My biggest concern with this property is safety. This is an old building with no fire escape. I could see one smoke detector and I believe it was incorrectly positioned. I could see no fire doors in the building. But riskiest of all was the front door – if the front door has been locked with a key, it is not possible to open it from the inside without a key. Recent guests had deposited their keys in the internal letter box on departure, and then found that they couldn't get out the building. Gilles suggested that the door isn't normally locked - a resident told me she locks the door overnight. Fire exits should never require a key to exit, and any potential guests should check with Gilles that the lock has been changed before...
Gilles' apartment was absolutely perfect for us -- lovely apartment with everything we needed, unbeatable location. Gilles made us feel very welcome. We arrived and left at unusual times, and Gilles made sure that arrival and checking out were easy.
If we return to Strasbourg (something we'd love to do), we'd certainly try and stay here again. Thanks for everything!
Gilles was extremely communicative and helpful for us. His apartment was exactly as described online - it's so clean and it couldn't be better situated. We were able to walk everywhere from the flat, and we really enjoyed our time there. Gilles made sure we had everything we needed; the kitchen was stocked for us to cook dinner one night, and there are countless amazing restaurants close by. The Cathedral, one of the most beautiful sights of Strasbourg, is a 3 minute walk away, as are many wonderful shops. We had a great time - would recommend staying here if you visit Strasbourg; we would come back next time!
