The Woodshed; Private Studio Cabin

Cabin - Entire home/apt · Northeast 80th Avenue, Portland, OR 97213, United States

This is one part converted-garage-studio-apartment, and two parts Portland funky-chic-wood-cabin. It boasts hard-wood floors, mixed-tile accents, and garden-shed skylights. It is, in a word, unique. But in two hyphenated words, it's cozy-unique.

The Space

Everything about The Woodshed is distinctive, but we especially love how light and airy, yet cozy, the space is, even in Portland's darker months. This place was created by someone with a lot of dreams, a deep, unwavering love of wood in all its forms, and an interest in employing it often, and with wild abandon.

The studio lay-out is a great fit for one to two people who like each other.

Guest Access

At The Woodshed, you have your own kitchenette, bathroom with a shower, and living space, Wifi, a neighborhood library branch next door, and shared access to a full backyard (going through a transition during the 2013-14 winter).

The space is heated, and the bed has a heating pad for the colder months. Fans and lots of windows and some french doors out to the garden for lots of air flow during the warmer months.

Two beautiful vintage cruiser bikes available to rent during your stay! $10 rental for each bike, includes helmet, locks, lights. The equipment must be returned in the same condition it was rented. Guests will be held financially responsible for loss or damage to the equipment.

Interaction with Guests

Since this is a separate space, we need not interact at all, but if you want to swap stories, we can, as we are right next door, and happy to help with any questions that might come up.

The Neighborhood

This is one of the greatest up-and-coming neighborhoods in Portland. There is an incredible diversity in just a few block radius, including some of the best authentic Asian restaurants in town, The Grotto (a beautiful garden space created for prayer, contemplation, meditation), numerous bikeways, and all within a few miles of the airport (but not in the flight path). It's a short skip and a jump to the Alameda, Hollywood, and Alberta neighborhoods, all with loads of unique shops and restaurants.

Getting around

Portland has the greatest public transportation ever! Check out the Trimet website to find out about bus, Max (light rail), and street car options. As mentioned above, we have loads of bikeways, too, for the bike commuter, and Portland is a delight to walk in. But if you have a car, parking is available (on-street or in the driveway).

  • My 17-year-old daughter and I stayed in Portland while visiting the University if Oregon, in Eugene. Ariel is a true jewel. Her sole focus was that we enjoy our stay. We did enjoy our stay. Staying in the Woodshed was a perfect experience, and Ariel was perfectly lovely.
We recommend eating at both Namaste, and the Cozy Cottage, just down the street. We even watched a movie that we played on my daughter's laptop, that we rented at Safeway. We would definitely stay again!!

  • A fantastic space, perfect for 1 or 2 people. Cozy, bright, and airy. Great little kitchen, too! Highly recommend.

  • The Woodshed was a wonderful place to stay. It was much larger than I was expecting. Very cozy and warm. The heating in the place works amazing. Ariel left some goodies for me when I got to The Woodshed. She was very accommodating. It has a private entrance so you can come and go as you please without feeling like you are intruding. It is an amazing space. Will definitely be staying here again when in PDX.

  • Ariel was an amazing host. My fiance and I stayed the first night in town and though we had plans to move closer to downtown for the rest of our stay, we ended up returning last minute. Ariel was very accommodating and booked us last minute. She even called to make sure everything was arranged correctly.

The space is cozy, private, and a great a escape from the busy downtown Portland. It's located in a part of town not often on people's radar, but is filled with some great vintage stores and amazing places to eat.

    Completely recommend!

  • We enjoyed our weekend in the Woodshed. I was surprised at how bright and spacious it was and it had everything we could need. Ariel supplied coffee and treats and some notes on where to visit. It was exactly as described. We are always looking for a unique place to stay that we will remember, and this exceeded my expectations!

  • Lovely and unique setting, very private too. The heat works great on rainy Portland nights - we were very nice and toasty. We really appreciated the many delicious snacks and drinks. And I really loved the yummy hand soap scent!

  • The Woodshed was as pictured and promised. A cozy oasis! We are Portlanders ourselves but needed a place for the night and Ariel's Woodshed was the perfect setting. The skylights and icy rain provided the prefect soundtrack for our stay there. It was warm and bright indoors. Ariel offered fresh-cut flowers, Stumptown coffee, an assortment of teas, breakfast items and snacks. Couldn't have asked for a better overnighter! Would recommend to my own future out-of-towners. We weren't able to enjoy the backyard, but I image in summer, it would be an added bonus! Another plus for book fans, it's right next door to a library.

  • Ariel's Woodshed is an adorable place to stay within easy driving distance of anywhere you'd want to go in Portland. Ariel herself was very hospitable and easy to communicate with. We had a problem with being cold in the place, due to Portland being extremely cold at the time (10 degrees or something) and the woodshed being more set up for normal temperatures. It was so cold the pipes were frozen in the morning! But even that was dealt with satisfactorily, and as such had a positive experience overall.

I'm a mid-level Portlander. For example, I bike commute but don't ride a fixie. I love, love, love the PNW and have bounced around this little corner most of my life, with a few jaunts to other climes. I spend my days working at a large institution, managing a very productive department, daydreaming about gardening. I have taken to gardening at night by headlamp, to fit it all in. I'm a voracious reader, or can be when there is time, and tend toward starting crafting projects and abandoning them about 3/4 of the way through.
