The Finest of Bites

Only a few blocks away from the Hardy House is the elegant and lovely Milkwood restaurant, headed by internationally acclaimed celebrity chef, and James Beard Award Winner, Edward Lee has been on NBC’s prestigious, Top Chef. Vincenzo’s is one of the finest Italian restaurants in the region, while Proof on Main offers cutting-edge fusion fine dining. Righ on Fourth Street is Guy Fieri’s Smokehouse and Brazeiro’s Churrascaria, a smart Brazilian steakhouse. The English Grill and the Oakroom are expert at classical American fine dining, while Rivue has mastered the art of seafood and steaks.

An Entertaining and Serene Downtown Neighborhood

Fourth Street is downtown Louisville’s place for generations of diners, shoppers, theater-goers and urbanites to see and be seen. Check out a show at the historic Louisville Palace. Opened in 1928, the theatre is a lavish Spanish Baroque Revival style with fountains, statues and tapestries. Also, in the immediate area are Louisville Ghost Tours, Locked In: The Louisville Escape Game, and Jim Beam Urban Stillhouse.

With its unique streetscape program and a collection of museums and cultural institutions, you will enjoy Main Street’s vitality and creative energy, from its 120 foot bat to the red penguins roaming its rooftops. “Museum Row,” downtown’s West Main Street is home to nearly myriad attractions in one historic neighborhood, located a block south of the Ohio River. It is housed in America’s second largest collection of Victorian cast-iron facades. Only New York City’s SoHo district has more 19th century cast-iron storefronts.

These must-see attractions include the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, Muhammad Ali Center, Frazier History Museum, Kentucky Science Center and more. Bourbon enthusiasts will enjoy the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience and this area will also be the home of Michter's Distillery. Art lovers will enjoy: Glassworks, KMAC, 21c Museum Hotel, Actor’s Theatre of Louisville and The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. Not to mention the KFC Yum! Center, a multi-purpose sports and concert arena, located downtown.

Excitement, Exercise and Adventure

A short walk takes you to the Louisville Extreme Park, the place to go for skateboarders and extreme bikers. It features 40,000 square feet of outdoor, concrete skating surface, as well as a 24- foot full pipe and a wooden vert ramp. In the adjacent Waterfront Park, the Big Four bridge—a six-span former railroad truss bridge that crosses the Ohio River, connecting Louisville and Jeffersonville, Indiana—is the longest pedestrian-only bridge in the world. For a heart-thumping adventure, try indoor rock climbing at Climb NuLu. Also very nearby are the future Waterfront Botanical Gardens and Louisville City FC Soccer Stadium.

Just a Little Further Around the Way

The Howard Hardy is also conveniently a few minutes ride from the shops and galleries of NuLu, the beauty of Cherokee Park, the University of Louisville, Bardstown Road and Frankfort Avenue, and Churchill Downs racetrack.

Louisville’s 17-acre Central Park is nearby, and was designed by the acclaimed Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed Manhattan’s Central Park. Bordered by some of the most gorgeous Old Louisville Victorian architecture, the park features tennis courts and sanguine walking trails.

A beautiful historic 1800s building, that was once a grocery store, plays host to the Butchertown Grocery. This relaxed topnotch restaurant features phenomenal original cocktails, and American cuisine with a twist, with gnocchi, rotisserie, burgers and beignets. For barbeque lovers, Feast BBQ is one of the hottest tickets in NuLu. For those who crave spicy food, Royals Hot Chicken would fit the bill. Once a popular food truck, Grind Burger Kitchen has set up shop for those with a craving for burgers. Locals rave about the wok-seared lima beans from Mayan Café.

Meanwhile Butchertown Social offers New American food fare, cocktails, craft beer, fine art exhibitions, live music, live jazz, pub trivia and more. You can choose from over 1,000 beers at Sergio’s World of Beers, a local cult classic. Butchertown is home to Bourbon Country’s only brandy distillery, Copper & Kings. For craft brew devotees, try the bourbon barrel ale at Goodwood Brewing Company. Take a tour and enjoy a sampling of its spirits in the tasting room. Play Dance Bar is the place to be for drag shows and dance parties.

Take in the architecture of the Butchertown Historic District, including St. Joseph Catholic Church built in 1866. The Greek Revival and Shot-gun homes on Washington Street and others put the neighborhood on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Experience the area’s rich history at the Thomas Edison House, where you’ll be enlightened about the inventor’s inspirational time spent in Louisville. Or, stop by Hadley Pottery for an inside look at how the iconic stoneware is made. The remaining front facade of the former early 19th century Heigold House features a detailed sketch of important early Whig Party leaders.

On the First Friday of the month, hop aboard a ZeroBus for the First Friday Hop. It’s an all-in-one art show, shopping adventure and street party. Butchertown Market is a one-stop-shop, featuring Cellar Door Chocolates, known for its delicious gourmet chocolates and Bourbon Balls. Moss Hill makes handcrafted lotions, soaps and candles with specialty scents like Bourbon and Mint Julep. At Bourbon Barrel Foods, you can pick up Bourbon barrel smoked spices, small batch soy sauce aged in Bourbon barrels and specialty bitters. You’ll also find locally crafted artwork and jewelry at Work the Metal, along with clothing, handbags, home décor and other one-of-a-kind gifts.
