About This Listing
This property is on Hawaii Island, also known as The Big Island - the largest and most volcanic of the Hawaiian archipelago. Located in the rural district of Puna, on the southeastern side of Hawaii Island, the Kapoho Cottage is less than a 5 minute walk to the famed Wai 'Opae Marine Sanctuary. This is the most snorkeling spot on this side of the island, where acres of deep tide pools contain a multitude of jewel colored tropical fish and corals. The cottage itself, on Kapoho Kai Road, is a small romantic bungalow surrounded by a natural volcanically warmed tidal pond. The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful set off from the incredibly scenic byway that has been called the Red Road, but officially is highway 137. Almost all of Hawaii's papaya is grown in this area. Along this coastal highway, you will find the large volcanically warmed swimming pond at Ahalanui County Park, and some of the best surfing areas surrounding Issac Hale Park - also known as Poho'iki. The drive meanders through the amazing light filtering tree tunnels made from roadside hala, coconut, and monkey pod trees, and passes the black sand beach of Kehena, and ends at the lava flow that engulfed the village of Kalapana in the 1980's.
Located in a quiet Kapoho neighborhood, this sweet little island-style home is two blocks from the Kapoho Tide Pools, famed for excellent snorkeling in acres of deep connected pools. The house is a one bedroom with a queen bed. There is a futon in the living room that will sleep two. The kitchen is fully equipped, and there is a washer and dryer. The bathroom has a shower and an outside entrance so that you can shower after swimming in the tidal pond that surrounds the house, There is a heated outdoor shower for after swimming (no soap or shampoo please because of the pond fish) There is a barbecue, and picnic table for eating on the wrap-around deck.
Internet is provided, and a landline phone - no cable, but there is a 15 inch tv with a Netflix account for streaming movies.
Nearby is the Ahalanui Warm Ponds Park, less than a mile down highway 137. Pahoa Town is 15 minutes away, with grocery stores, a big Longs Drug store, and several good restaurants. My favorite is Kaleo's - great food and atmosphere. Hilo is half an hour away. The Volcanos National Park is an hour and a half away.
Interaction with Guests
We would love you to contact us when you get to the island. We are available to help with more direction, if needed. I know that most people are here to have a quiet getaway, but let us know if you want company. :-)
On this island, you really need a car to get around, because public transport is not frequent or convenient.
Other Things to Note
Several people who stay here comment on the little colorful geckos in and around the house. Geckos are a good thing, as they are a natural pest control, plus they have a sweet nature. Here is a link I found with more information : (website hidden)?/archives/610-House-Geckos.html
Shoes off inside. Lock up when not home. No soap or shampoo in the outdoor shower to keep the pond healthy.
The Kapoho Tiki Cottage exceeded our expectations. The property is even better than it looks in pictures, full of details (totem pole shower, hand painted bamboo touches, lovely kitchen, fresh flowers). Bryn was so helpful in doing all she could to get us connected since we were a last-minute reservation. I really appreciated her hospitality.
If you don't know about Kapoho, its a neighborhood built on lava flow tide pools and the Tiki Cottage sits on one of them. A short walk away, and you can be snorkeling around brightly colored fish and coral. Its a stunning location and a gem of a cottage. Will definitely book this cottage again.
The house was a dream. Very comfortable and made you feel like you were away from it all. We loved everything about our stay. Bryn was a great hostess who made sure we had everything we needed prior to our arrival. It was our first AirBnB and we will be lucky if our future stays are half as good as our stay at the Tiki Cottage.
This is a lovely one bedroom cottage which also has a pullout sofa bed, perfect for our 3 person family. We loved the location in a quiet area of the island in Puna, close to the ocean and a short walk to the Tidepools for great snorkelling, and a one hour drive into the Volcanic National Park - both places we spent a lot of time at, so a convenient location. The cottage was very nicely decorated, clean and private. Definitely worth a stay!
The Kapoho Tiki Cottage was exactly as described. We had a lovely stay - everything was tidy for our arrival and Bryn checked it to make sure all was okay. The cottage is well-located and very comfortable! We loved going for a swim in the surrounding tide pool, walking down to snorkel in the famous Kapoho tide pools or heading off to another gorgeous location on the Big Island. Thank you!
Bryn made us feel so at home in Big Island, the cottage was beautifully kept and in such a great location. We loved the local tide pools and it's a perfect base to explore the Hilo side of the Island and the volcanoes. We would recommend the cottage to anyone looking for an adventure and relaxation

About the Host, Bryn
I am a retired schoolteacher living in Hawaii with my husband, Danny. I enjoy photography, painting, and gardening. I enjoy growing some of my own food, like papaya, coconut, pineapple and vegetables. A few years ago I traveled to Italy for a month, and stayed at an Airbnb apartment in Siena. The experience made me realize that, I too, need to be hosting on Airbnb! I've been hosting since late November, and what a wonderful experience it is. Two years ago Danny and I traveled to New Zealand, Tasmania, and Victoria Australia - enjoying stays at Airbnb's along the way! Last year we did the same in Peru and Ecuador.
My motto is to love what you do, and give back what you can.
