Pontremoli, Toscana, Italy

Visit the old church across the field which locals say predates the 11th century and has a bell in its tower donated as a gift by a queen of Spain in the 1300's. Walk the trail down to the river for a swim or go all the way to the famous canyon, Stretti di Giaredo (water shoes recommended). The Apennine National Park is 1 hour away (38km) for beautiful mountain scenery and hiking. Spend a day exploring the nearby villages of Lunigiana or simply stay put and relax enjoying the rustic common areas, warm lighting and beautiful outdoor spaces. The town of Pontremoli is only 4km away and offers groceries, shopping, restaurants, a castle/museum and sightseeing. The Via Francigena, an ancient pilgrimage trail that runs from Canterbury England to Rome, passes through Pontremoli.
