Our antique, teak-wood 'Gladak' is a blend of rich history and modern comforts. Private terrace, outdoor bathroom with rain shower, massive king size bed, kitchenette and designer finishings. Have a swim in our infinity pool overlooking the valley!

The Space

Our guesthouse is a traditional "gladak" imported from Suluwesi. It is furnished with unique pieces from all across the Indonesian archipelago, and has been restored with all the modern comforts: air conditioning, fridge, coffee and tea making, fast WIFI and open-air bathroom full of giant trees! It has a king size, hypo-allergenic, four-poster bed as well as a sofa that can be used as a bed for 2 small children.

As a guest, you will enjoy a home-made, organic breakfast on the large terrace. You can also use our infinity pool off the main house which overlooks the gorge and rice terraces (we just ask that you respect our family's privacy once we return home from work/school).

The gladak is a 50sqm/500sqf stand-alone building with complete privacy, including terrace and bathroom.

On the property we also have a trampoline (built into the ground), a fire pit for camp-fires, huge beautiful trees and a bamboo grove.

There is lots of parking right outside our door. We are located 100m off the village road down a private driveway, so there is no traffic noise at all!

Our compound is located 1.4km from the main road of Ubud, in the village of Kutuh Kaja, where you will find an abundance of restaurants, spas, studios and shops. The Ubud Botanical Gardens is 500m further up our street, and the only gym in Ubud is 700m from our house.

During your stay with us, we're happy to suggest things to do, places to see, and interesting people to meet-- but you will find it all in our "welcome book' anyway, which we can send you by email before you arrive so you can plan your trip. Some of our favorite things in Ubud are yoga classes, mountain biking, visiting alternative healers, and visits to some of Bali's incredible temples. The book also has contact info for local driver, and scooter/bike rental places.

Guest Access

Besides the room and the large private terrace, you are welcome to come have a swim in our infinity pool if we are not around (after that, we ask that you respect our family time, of which we seem to have precious little these days!). If you have kids, feel free to bounce on our in-ground trampoline or swing on our massive bamboo swing set!

Interaction with Guests

We love hosting people and will definitely welcome you. We also respect guests' privacy, so besides offering help where requested, we will leave you to enjoy your stay in peace. We try to keep our kitchen and living areas private, to ensure that hosting people remains a pleasure for our family and gives guests the chance to do what they came to Bali for-- to rest deeply and enjoy the magic of Ubud. That said, the kids are always up for playing with new friends, so don't be too shy!

The Neighborhood

Kutuh Kaja is a quiet, tree-lined village surrounded by rice-fields and river gorges. Our house is just 1.5 kilometres north of the main rd in Ubud, where you will find an abundance of restaurants, shops and activities.

Getting around

Ubud has no public transport or registered taxi service, although there are a number of private drivers on call. Your 'welcome pack' has the telephone numbers of 4-5 that we have worked with for a long time and can recommend.

Renting a scooter is by far the most convenient way to get around Ubud, and a lot of fun! We can have a scooter delivered from the rental place, at around $4-5 a day.

Other Things to Note

We have two pets, a gloden-doodle dog named Luna (security) and a cat named Boots (our resident critter-controller). Both are very friendly and, if you like animals, will likely come up for a pet or a lap-stroke while you are on the terrace! They are both great with kids.

Bali is Bali.... so as much as we would like to ensure that you have the perfect experience while you are with us, the elements don't always agree with us. Wacky weather and poorly managed civic services mean that power-outages and minor dysfunctions of the house do happen on occasion-- it's all part of living in the tropics. We do our best to solve problems as soon as they occur, and pray for your grace and good humour while we get things back on track!

There are no telephone lines or TV available to you in the room, so best if you bring a mobile phone with you to use (sim cards are cheap and easy to get in Bali, and we have an extra one if you need it). WIFI is available, but not especially fast, so if you need to download a lot its best to go to HUBUD.

  • Our stay was absolutely incredible. I wish we'd been there longer. The Guesthouse was a gorgeous structure, as were all the buildings at the house -- a phenomenal dreamhouse. Amazing pool. Steve had fabulous tips on Ubud and was very friendly and welcoming. All the staff were wonderful, particularly Trisna who was instrumental in arranging drivers/excursions/anything we asked for!! The breakfasts were hearty and delicious. The local cell phone was a super idea, really helped us. We loved renting the scooters, not as bad as it looks and the best way to get into town without working up a sweat! We ate at both local restaurants Steve recommended -- Abe-do and the Japanese place down the street, which served udon that rivaled any I've eaten in Japan.

We couldn't take enough photos of the bathroom, loved showering outside and with such a cool wooden-statue-guy to hold the plumbing. Wow. So glad we stayed here, sad to leave, sorry we missed Renee.

  • This B&b has a great location, close to Ubud. The guesthouse looks amazing and Steve & Renee have a lovely home. We especially loved the outdoor rainshower. Things we needed, like scooter rental or driver could be arranged easily. Only one thing we didn't like: we didn't get breakfast the day we left (probably because it was Sunday and there was no staff around?). Overall: a great experience!

  • It's an amazing house to stay in ubud. Very beautifully made. Peaceful. Clean. I love the way Steve and Renee combine the traditional elements with modern comfort. Just perfect for a relaxing holiday in Ubud. Good location. Great home- made breakfast served with local Balinese coffee. Steve was helpful and friendly, and the lady who was preparing our breakfast in the morning was very warm. Highly recommended :)

  • Wonderful Eco cottage set in amongst the gardens. We were on a business trip so a busy time, but lovely to come home to the tranquility of the cottage. The staff are just lovely and bring a lovely breakfast each day. We loved the little organic cafe 2minutes walk away with their gorgeous juices and affordable meals.

  • Just Great. Thank you for such a Nice stay in ubud.

  • We stayed here for 5 nights in April '14 for our honeymoon. We absolutely loved the location because it was away from the (crazy) center of Ubud. The accommodations were comfortable with a wonderful outdoor bathroom. Having a fridge and hot water heater was nice. We only spent time with Steve but he was super helpful. We had scooters brought directly to us which we used the whole time and loved it! We had a great time going north from the city to check out the village life and rice patties.

The only slight con was that we were hoping to have the house be a bit more removed from the main house (just my impression from the picture) and a bit more comfortable seating outside. Inside was nice but is a bit dark during the day.

Overall, we were very happy with our stay and thankful for our wonderful hosts and their loving pets.

  • We stayed in the teakhouse for a week and we enjoyed every minute of it. We did not have the chance to talk to the owners very much as we respected each others privacy. Room was spacious and clean, musquito net was appreciated as there where lots of musquitos and red ants! The pool was great! Staff was very helpful and super friendly, and Luna and Boots just made my days!

  • It was our first stay in Bali and we couldnt ask for more. The architecture, the garden, the decoration make us feel in a dream. Steeve an Renee are so attentive, helpfull and all staff's kindness is absolutely awesome.

We are from Canada, and have been working our way around the world... first with the UN and now in social enterprise. We have two 'third culture kids' who attend the Green School because we believe in sustainability, global leadership and community. We love fresh food, fresh air and fresh perspectives; so there is nothing better than a dinner party with a healthy debate about ideas that can change the world. Our style of hosting is simple: we set you up with everything you need in our "Welcome Pack' (local phone numbers, activities, restaurant suggestions) and hope you will enjoy the adventure of getting to know Bali on your own... which is sometimes smooth as silver.... and other times, a little rocky. Ubud is a magical place with lots of opportunity to eat, live and learn well. But it helps to expect some Bali belly, an occasional power-outage and some road rash if you get too daring riding your motorcycle-- so that when they don't happen, you've enjoyed your trip even more! It's all part of the fun, and we are always here to help if you need it. We especially welcome guests from exotic places and families with small children who like to play. We only ask that you respect the privacy of our main residence. The guesthouse should have everything you need, and you can use the poolside whenever we are at school/work.
