Glamour + camping = glamping!

Come glamp in our little slice of country life. This 1964 Kenskill camper has been fabulously restored and customized so you can play "pretend camp" while enjoying the comforts of home. This is a great spot especially if you've ever been tiny-home-curious.

In a previous life, this caravan was the food truck for Katie Cupcake, serving up the delicious treats in Flagstaff, AZ. You're sure to enjoy sweet dreams. ;)

We rearranged the interior so it feels much more spacious than the traditional layout. It's really quite nice inside. And yes, there's even a full bathroom with a proper flush toilet, sink, and small separate shower. Towels and linens provided.

All greywater (sinks and shower) are filtered through a composting worm bin and the water recycled into the garden. We'll provide you with biodegradable soaps safe for plants and animals.

Full kitchen is stocked with the tools you need to cook for your stay. Working gas range, double sink, microwave and fridge. Coffee and tea provided, plus fresh eggs when the young hens start laying enough! Hopefully we'll have enough to share soon. In the meantime, watching "chicken TV" is a relaxing way to enjoy the garden.

Our place is one of those homes that's all front yard, and we positioned this trailer so you can sit at the dinette and enjoy a view of the garden and our silly flock of chickens.

Some people ask about safety. We've lived in the East Bay for 15 years, sampling the whole socioeconomic spectrum of neighborhoods. The only times we've ever had issues were in the "nicest" and the "worst" of them. We've felt more at home here in this slice of town that we've felt anywhere else in the Bay Area. Put on your city smarts and you should be A-OK.

That being said, there are lots of great places to eat and drink nearby whether you want to walk, bike or drive. Three great new restaurants opened nearby: Moxy (excellent beer garden with amazing fries), Next Door (solid brunch and dinner fare), and Easy Creole (casual and delicious). Our favorite local spot is Sweet Adeline with delicious pastries and tasty coffee. Another coffee and sandwich shop, Alchemy Cafe just opened up next to Easy Creole. It's straight out of Portlandia.

On Tuesdays, there's a farmer's market from 3-7pm just a couple blocks away! A little further and we have a Saturday market nearby too on Stanford Ave.

Your hosts are two UCB alums and former co-opers. Lewis is a programmer by day, musician by night. Ginger does all manner of things and works from home. We enjoy playing innkeep so after we get you all settled in, we'll leave you to your own devices, but don't hesitate to ask if you need anything.

Thanks for looking and happy travels!

Guest Access

Everything inside the trailer, shared garden, loaner bikes (ask us first to get set up!). Patio is for cottage guests.

Interaction with Guests

Once we get you all settled in, we'll leave you to your own devices. This is our home and we live onsite, so we're very accessible. You'll probably see us puttering around the garden or enjoying chicken theater at some point.

The Neighborhood

For some reason Airbnb doesn't know how to place us on the map. We're on the same block as Lois the Pie Queen -- a neighborhood fixture and solid greasy spoon diner.

Getting around

7 block walk to the closest BART station, 20-25min train to SF.

Other Things to Note

We have a camp cot you can use as a second bed. To fit it, you will have to sacrifice the dinette.

  • Ginger and Lewis were wonderful hosts. We felt very comfortable and enjoyed watching the chickens from our window. The location is not a far drive into San Francisco. We'd definitely stay here again.

  • Glamping in Oakland was wonderful. I loved the caravan, the chickens, the eggs and the abundant urban garden. Thanks Ginger and Lewis for making my first glamping trip so memorable.

  • We had a wonderful stay at the Muffin Mansion! It was cute, clean, and very efficiently designed. We adored the cats, chickens, and succulent garden - a true urban oasis! 10 min walk to the BART, then 20 minutes to San Fran. We only briefly met Ginger, but she was very helpful and warm, plus the binder with local recs/reviews was appreciated. Adorable and unique place to stay in the Bay Area!

  • I had an amazing stay at the muffin mansion! It really made realize how simply one can live with a few well maintained amenities. Ginger also gave me eggs from her chickens, which were delicious! It's located in a very ideal location near Emeryville, Berkeley, and downtown Oakland! Thank you so much for hosting me!

  • I arrived on an unseasonably hot Spring day for Oakland and Ginger had already moved in a swamp cooler to help cool things off. We chatted for awhile, until she went off to look after her chickens, a chore not often associated with your typical city dwellers routine. And I have no problem with a break from typical. They have carved themselves out a pretty cool little spot, with more privacy than you might expect together with lots of growing things. I'd love to see what they could do with an acre or two. My trailer made me think I was part of a late 60s gatefold LP cover! I have to admit I spent very little time there...but it seems to me there is ample room to fix a meal, eat in comfort and hang for awhile.
As much as I liked it, I should say the shower and I never hit it off. While I am not a small guy, the shower is. My biggest problem was getting the temp dialed in and having it remain there. When you're in a tiny shower and the water goes from just fine to really hot to really cold, there's nowhere to hide while you readjust. No one else has complained, so maybe I just didn't figure out the secret. But I loved the place other than that.

  • The muffin mansion was so amazing! We got fresh chicken eggs from the yard - just one of the things ginger did to make us feel so comfortable and welcome during our trip! Amazing place, wonderful people.

  • We enjoyed the funky little camper! Perfect location for us, we never had to drive! Able to walk all over Berkerley and took the BART to San Fransisco. Wonderful hosts, very friendly and worked with our last minute travel plans.
Thanks again Ginger & Lewis for your hospitality, LONG LIVE WEEN ;)

  • I had a wonderful stay in Ginger&Lewis' caravan for 3 nights with my girlfriend.
Their caravan is really comfy and cosy, and it's a really fun place to stay.
Ginger&Lewis were very accommodating hosts and made our holiday as comfortable as possible.
The caravan is within walking and cycling distance to the BART station and Berkeley town centre so there's plenty to do in the area.
I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a short term place to stay near San Fran

  • Our stay at the Muffin Mansion was a delight. The space was clean, private and provided us with a good view of the chickens (whose eggs were delicious). We met Ginger briefly and she was accommodating and friendly. We appreciated their handbook with lots of great dinner suggestions.

From their location we were able to walk to Berkeley and a really decent, local beer/wine store. I recommend this as a great place to stay on a budget.

Can I just say we love Oakland? Many of our guests come here as a base camp for exploring San Francisco, but Oakland is HOT. It's in the middle of a rapid transformation and the air is just crackling with energy. In all our travels, we've discovered that it's easy to visit a place, but it's hard to visit a time. If you want to experience a city that's alive, where Something Is Happening, where the glory days are here and now -- then Oakland is where you want to be. -- We (Lewis and Ginger) are two UC Berkeley alums and former co-opers. We're also the creators of the Puking Kitty Saucy Boat -- it's hideously delightful. Lewis plays with computers and music, Ginger plays with glass and design. We love coffee, brew beer, throw BBQs and religiously attend the East Bay Bike Party. A few years back, we bought a fixer-upper and have been terraforming it here and there as the budget allows. As more and more friends and family started staying the night, we realized we love playing host. So we've decided to open up the place, give Airbnb a try, and play innkeep to folks passing through. Together we've traveled to Norway, Peru, Nicaragua, Jalisco Mexico, New York, New Orleans, Boise ID, Madison WI, Denver CO, Salt Lake City, Tucson AZ, Chicago IL, all up and down the US Pacific Coast, Argentina, Philippines, and Bali. P.S. My parents have a Philippines beach resort on Airbnb. Check it out:
