Glamour + camping = glamping!
Come glamp in our little slice of country life. This 1964 Kenskill camper has been fabulously restored and customized so you can play "pretend camp" while enjoying the comforts of home. This is a great spot especially if you've ever been tiny-home-curious.
In a previous life, this caravan was the food truck for Katie Cupcake, serving up the delicious treats in Flagstaff, AZ. You're sure to enjoy sweet dreams. ;)
We rearranged the interior so it feels much more spacious than the traditional layout. It's really quite nice inside. And yes, there's even a full bathroom with a proper flush toilet, sink, and small separate shower. Towels and linens provided.
All greywater (sinks and shower) are filtered through a composting worm bin and the water recycled into the garden. We'll provide you with biodegradable soaps safe for plants and animals.
Full kitchen is stocked with the tools you need to cook for your stay. Working gas range, double sink, microwave and fridge. Coffee and tea provided, plus fresh eggs when the young hens start laying enough! Hopefully we'll have enough to share soon. In the meantime, watching "chicken TV" is a relaxing way to enjoy the garden.
Our place is one of those homes that's all front yard, and we positioned this trailer so you can sit at the dinette and enjoy a view of the garden and our silly flock of chickens.
Some people ask about safety. We've lived in the East Bay for 15 years, sampling the whole socioeconomic spectrum of neighborhoods. The only times we've ever had issues were in the "nicest" and the "worst" of them. We've felt more at home here in this slice of town that we've felt anywhere else in the Bay Area. Put on your city smarts and you should be A-OK.
That being said, there are lots of great places to eat and drink nearby whether you want to walk, bike or drive. Three great new restaurants opened nearby: Moxy (excellent beer garden with amazing fries), Next Door (solid brunch and dinner fare), and Easy Creole (casual and delicious). Our favorite local spot is Sweet Adeline with delicious pastries and tasty coffee. Another coffee and sandwich shop, Alchemy Cafe just opened up next to Easy Creole. It's straight out of Portlandia.
On Tuesdays, there's a farmer's market from 3-7pm just a couple blocks away! A little further and we have a Saturday market nearby too on Stanford Ave.
Your hosts are two UCB alums and former co-opers. Lewis is a programmer by day, musician by night. Ginger does all manner of things and works from home. We enjoy playing innkeep so after we get you all settled in, we'll leave you to your own devices, but don't hesitate to ask if you need anything.
Thanks for looking and happy travels!
Everything inside the trailer, shared garden, loaner bikes (ask us first to get set up!). Patio is for cottage guests.
Once we get you all settled in, we'll leave you to your own devices. This is our home and we live onsite, so we're very accessible. You'll probably see us puttering around the garden or enjoying chicken theater at some point.
For some reason Airbnb doesn't know how to place us on the map. We're on the same block as Lois the Pie Queen -- a neighborhood fixture and solid greasy spoon diner.
7 block walk to the closest BART station, 20-25min train to SF.
We have a camp cot you can use as a second bed. To fit it, you will have to sacrifice the dinette.
Q. Is there heat?
A. Yes, we provide a space heater that keeps it warm and cozy.
Q. Is there hot water?
A. Yes, there is a dedicated on-demand water heater for the caravan.
Q. If we don't want to share the bed, is there room to put a mat on the ground?
A. Kind of, but I wouldn't recommend it. You could fit a mat on the walkway to the bathroom, but then you'd have to step on each other to get around!
Q. Do you have luggage storage?
A. Sure, we can fit a few pieces of luggage in our locked toolroom.
Q. Where do I park?
A. Parking is onstreet and fairly easy. If you don't get a spot just outside, you can usually find one on the block. Watch for street sweeping signs (a few hours out of the month).
Q. Can I get a discount?
A. We only offer discounts for long term stays, and the long term rates are automatically figured into the price.
Q. Can I bring an animal?
A. Sorry, no. We need to keep the space allergen-free.
Our little compound is appropriate for adults and mature, well-behaved only. Children must be supervised at all times. We ask guests to be respectful of the cottage and its contents, of the people who work and live here, and of the grounds.
-Since we occasionally host guests with allergies, no animals are allowed inside, including our cats.
-Please use only the septic-safe toilet paper we provide. Only this and human waste down the toilet, otherwise our pump can burn out!
-Please use only the biodegradable soaps and conditioner we provide, as this water is recycled into our landscaping.
-Quiet hours (keep noises low) are between 10pm and 8am.
-You must be comfortable with cats, chickens, and cannabis. Smoking is OK outdoors; please use the ashtrays.
-If you cook, please wash up after yourself.
Ginger and Lewis were excellent hosts, and the caravan was comfortable, clean, and really cute. All the recommendations you could possibly need for food and fun in Oakland are there for you in the caravan, and the coffee and tea provided are an added bonus. I felt perfectly at home here
Ginger and Lewis's muffin mansion is lovely. Everything is quite prepared. It was quite cold in the winter night, but the heater helped. The mansion could be compacted, but it fits the price. In general, this place can be a good choice for living. Thank you Ginger and Lewis.
A lovely caravan, welcoming hosts, lovely neighbourhood. Everything I hoped for and more. A bicycle is provided, and the BART station is even within walkable distance. Oakland's awesome hackerspace (Sudoroom) is just a few minutes away by bicycle. An excellent base for exploring Oakland or even SF.
I enjoyed my 3 nights at the vintage caravan. It's very cute, bed was super comfy, and it was nice sitting out in garden with good coffee (french press, great coffee beans & grinder in the mini kitchen were nice touch) watching chicken theater. Kitchen is outfitted with whatever you need for cooking if you want to buy food. Also you are close to lots of places to grab a bite. Ginger and Lewis are great hosts. Location was convenient 7 blocks to Bart. I walked back from Bart station late at night by myself and felt ok. Yes you hear Bart and neighborhood noise but you get use to it. After all this is urban glamping! I was visiting my daughter in San Francisco so didn't have time to borrow one of their bikes and explore the area. You are a couple of blocks from Berkley. Would stay again.
What a great AirBNB experience! Everything was fine from booking until check out: Ginger' s fast answer was important while I was looking for a place to stay during the airbnb hosts event at San Francisco at november 2014.
She answered all my questions very kindly, so I choose to spend my birthday night at this lovely space and couldn't be a better choice! The place is calm, cute and very complete.
Although compact, offers all you need for a quick stay, for 1 person alone or a couple. The atmosphere is pleasant and the hosts very nice and Kind: they left good written information at the place and they were also able to help me thinking about tours and walks when I needed.
Walking distance to Ashby BART station, conecting with the Whole Bay Area.
I Really enjoyed the time I have spent there and will never foget the cute muffin mansion. Thank you :)
I love this house! It is super cute and warm, the bed was very comforable! And Ginger&lewis are very helpful and flexible! Nice !!

Can I just say we love Oakland? Many of our guests come here as a base camp for exploring San Francisco, but Oakland is HOT. It's in the middle of a rapid transformation and the air is just crackling with energy. In all our travels, we've discovered that it's easy to visit a place, but it's hard to visit a time. If you want to experience a city that's alive, where Something Is Happening, where the glory days are here and now -- then Oakland is where you want to be.
We (Lewis and Ginger) are two UC Berkeley alums and former co-opers. As of this January, we are also new parents! Lewis plays with computers and music, Ginger plays with glass and design. Our son, Jules, is learning to blow spit bubbles. We love coffee, brew beer, throw BBQs and religiously attend the East Bay Bike Party. A few years back, we bought a fixer-upper and have been terraforming it here and there as the budget allows. As more and more friends and family started staying the night, we realized we love playing host. So we've decided to open up the place, give Airbnb a try, and play innkeep to folks passing through.
Together we've traveled to Norway, Peru, Nicaragua, Jalisco Mexico, New York, New Orleans, Boise ID, Madison WI, Denver CO, Salt Lake City, Tucson AZ, Chicago IL, all up and down the US Pacific Coast, Argentina, Philippines, and Bali.
P.S. My parents have a Philippines beach resort on Airbnb. Check it out: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/539038
