A very mixed bag. The Barrio is a combination hotel cafe/bar/restaurant in the center of San Juan del Sur, about one long block to the beach, which is convenient. The food is good, the rooms are clean, the dining and cleaning staff are polite and try to accommodate the guests. The manager is new and trying to do a good job. However: It is not handicapped, elderly, or child accessible because of the stairs that have to be navigated to get into the cafe, down the cafe steps into the DR and to the reception office, and then up stairs unless you get one of the three first floor rooms, and the placement of equipment in the rooms. The first floor rooms look out on the restaurant and get all the restaurant noise from breakfast through lunch and dinner. The other rooms are on two upper floors and overlook the DR. Apples to apples comparison: I paid $50 per night with no breakfast included. The room was small compared with other rooms I have had for less money and including a breakfast and ocean view in other beach towns. I looked at metal roofs of other buildings. There were two double beds in the room, but only one shelf for storage and a rod with five hangers which surely would not be enough for more than two people. No dresser or other clothes storage. The beds faced in opposite directions. The old TV of the big back-end type was on a shelf approximately 8+ feet in the air. It could only be seen if the guest is on the bed facing in that direction, which is a problem if another person is using that bed. The TV remote did not work and I could not use the manual controls because the TV was so high in the air. No chair in the room to sit or stand on. In the bathroom there was one short towel rack by the sink which was OK. There was one towel hook at a reachable height, and other hooks close to the ceiling, about 7+ feet or more on an opposite wall that could not be reached by anyone under at least 5 feet 5 inches. There was one window behind the bed facing the TV. It had a wooden rod with a single curtain so that in order to get light I had to slide the curtain sideways, which meant standing on that bed. Unfortunately the rod was cut too short and the slightest movement of the curtain brought it crashing down. The manager gave me a rubber band to tie the curtain to let the light in. The power went out three time during my stay, which is not the fault of the hotel, and happens often in Central America. But they do not have a backup generator! The worst, however was the location on the street. Unknown to me, there is an all-night pizza place next door. If I had known...
Cool little place to stay in the heart of San Juan del sur. The food there is fantastic!
Very friendly and helpful staff which made the stay problem free, and I also felt very comfortable and welcomed. Hotel is in a great spot in the little town, and kept nice and clean. Thanks everyone!
Hotel Azul Pitahaya was a great place to stay. The staff was super friendly, even though my Spanish is terrible. The guys at the reception desk of the hotel speak very good English, so there was no sort of issue. The room was clean and there is hot water. The food in the restaurant, Cafe Barrio, was very good and nicely prepared. Pricing on everything is fair to the area and their happy hour was awesome; 2 margaritas for $4 (US). A few things to note to travelers : The hotel reception is through the restaurant, so don't feel weird about pulling your luggage through. The hot water is controlled by a switch on top of the shower head. At night they lock the gate once the restaurant is closed, so if you're out late, don't be surprised if you come back to it being locked up. There's a guard on the inside, so just knock and he'll let you right in once you show him your room key. They take USD, as do most places in San Juan Del Sur. One thing to improve on, would be that there's no real place for hotel guests to hang out besides their room. Some rooms have balconies, but ours didn't, so we spent a few (email hidden) in the restaurant, but once the bar/restaurant got busy, I felt like I was taking up space for patrons, so we left. The staff did NOT make us feel like we had to leave in any way, I just wanted to be polite. I would definitely stay here again, but in a room with a balcony.
