The is my first airbnb experience; I will never use a hotel again. Their home is one they bought under distress but you would not know that now. They have reconstructed everything to look like the early 1900’s while being perfect for today. Mica was the master chef for the Governor of Minnesota for five years. They have traveled broadly most recently to Antarctica. Great listeners, they are also open to sharing their international experiences but only when asked. Allowing me my independence, they are readily available to give suggestions for eating (the excellent and very reasonable Cherokee Tavern down the street was a highlight) and sightseeing (who would have thought that a flour mill could be so interesting.) One evening Mica and Hally told me in advance that they were having friends over and that they would go out later so as not to disturb my sleep. Later, as I headed out for dinner, they said, “Please come and join us; there is so much food.” This morning I set myself up on their dining table to pay bills. They happily greeted me, encouraged me to have a good day, said they were going out for breakfast with friends and were gone. No cautions like “be sure to turn the lights out” or “lock the front door”. They absolutely trusted me to keep their house safe. I have been emailing everyone that I know “Come to Minneapolis…even if you have no reason to be here…what an amazing airbnb the hosts are most amazing. After 24 hours in their home I feel that they will be friends forever. Luckily my daughter visits Minneapolis for business so she will be able to stay here. I believe that I would come back just to stay in this welcoming environment. Hally and Mica have thought of everything. Every time I start to ask a question about where something is I see it. For example, the wifi address and password are carefully printed and then placed in a small frame on the bookcase. A power strip for my cell phone and laptop is readily available. In the closet there is a box with a brand new hair dryer, a new iron with ironing mat, and an extra pillow which I am using now to prop me up. The is my first airbnb experience. I spent the night in a cute and cozy house which was a convenient 30 minute walk to get to downtown st paul. Had a great chat with my friendly hosts and enjoyed a great cup of coffee! Only wish i had allotted more time to spend here especially since it's located in such a gorgeous neighborhood!
Hally and Micah were awesome hosts. Everything was clean and inviting. They gave me maps of the area and personal recommendations of places to visit. The neighborhood was safe and quiet. Being 6'7" I was a bit concerned about sleeping on a futon, but I slept comfortably. If you like to walk like I do, it's only a 2 mile walk to downtown St. Paul, or you can take the bus that runs directly in front of the house.
Everything was accurate, the host kept me well informed despite issues I had prior to arrival. The room was as advertised which was great, and I'm glad to have stayed there.
What a lovely stay! Hally made it so easy for me to come and go when my schedule changed due to a delayed flight. I felt at home as they have the same food in the fridge as I do in mine. Our paths never crossed due to schedules but I would definitely stay again and would love to hear about their Antartica trip!

About the Host, Hally
I am a transplant that came to Minnesota from Colorado by way of Antarctica. My partner, Micah, and I met while working at McMurdo Research Station in Antarctica. We now reside in St. Paul and spend our free time rehabing homes, hosting people, and traveling. We are interested in information and story exchange and would love to hear about your journey to Minnesota and beyond.
