Interaction with guests

Gabriel’s goal is to make sure that you have an awesome experience in Rio and can focus on the important stuff, like your vacation - not worry about accommodation!
He will normally be around most days and very happy to give you advice and suggestions for getting around Rio and places to visit. Occasionally he has given guests short tours of Rio, but this is not a standard part of the package because of time constraints.
Born and raised at Leme neighborhood in Rio, the mystique of the Chapeu Mangueira’s Favela and the beauty of its people were always present in his life and imagination. As an adult he had the opportunity to work three years with children and families as a psychologist for a local organization called “Casa da Árvore”. As a result, he became completely involved with Chapéu Mangueira and decided to move from his comfortable apartment in Ipanema to live in the community. Always proud of this neighborhood, it is common to see him walking around with friends and relatives showing them the hospitality of local people, the delights of local cuisine, the trails and the panoramic views of the ocean and the rainforest. Working now at Abraço Carioca- Favela Hostel, his passionate and respectful relationship with Chapéu Mangueira has grown even more. His main target is to show our guests the authentic Carioca lifestyle through an unforgettable experience.
He’s proud of making the best Caipirinha in Town, come and judge for yourself.

Experiência incrível! I've had a great time at Gagas place! Nice rooms, kitchen with everything you need and a incredible view from the terrace! The Favela is calm, secure and even when we came back late at night, I never felt uncomfortable! Nice people and cool streetart everywhere! Gaga is the perfect Host, he knows everything about the city: where to go and (more important) where not to go! Plan a Tour around the City with him, you will get to know places, you never would walking around alone! Totally recommendable! Obrigado Gaga!

The host was very welcoming; however, the location description was not very accurate. I would recommend doing a lot of research on favelas before staying in one. It was a somewhat scary place to stay. My friends had arrived at night and the taxi driver refused to go up to their drop off point because he said he was nervous to be there at night. We ended up only staying one night because of this and finding different accommodations. Also, the walk to the beach is much further then the 5 minutes that the websit claims. After staying there 1 night I was also missing money from my wallet the next day when I hadn't purchased or gone anywhere after arriving at the favela from the airport. Needless to say this wasn't the best experience.

I had my concerns about staying in a Favela, but you never feel unsafe in the area because it is more like a community. You have a really good experience here, and it feels like an authentic Rio. The views are just amazing, whether you are up early to make breakfast with everyone, or coming home late from going out with everyone - the view is beautiful. Gaga has some great places to suggest to go out day or night. We even had a tour of a favela to see the fantastic view they had to offer. Basic facilities but everything you to go about your day. This was my second stay in Rio and wish I was here the first time round! Leme beach is also pretty close to walk too and great for surfing if you have some experience. Basic requirements for shops like egg and bread is at the bottom of the stairs (there is a lot but the view is worth it when you get up), otherwise the supermarket is not too far away. The area around Bar do David is pretty cool where all the locals hang out. You can even get a moto taxi to take you up and down the hill (if you are lucky to catch one at the top already). Thanks for the stay Gaga, this was definitely one of the best experiences I have had while travelling around Brazil for the 2 months.
