The Cottage By the Creek isn’t just an alternative to a hotel/motel, but rather a truly wonderful experience when you visit our lovely town of Chico.
The Cottage became an Airbnb property when my mother left her and my father’s home to move to the medical center where my father was suddenly a permanent resident due to multiple strokes. Many of their furnishings were too beautiful to part with, but too large for her new, one-bedroom apartment, so she shipped them to Chico in hopes that I could use them myself, or sell them for her. Well, selling her pieces was not an option in this economy, and there was no room at the main house in which to store them. While looking for cheap storage alternatives for her many things, the long-term renter in the cottage gave notice. Suddenly, there was my solution...furnish the cottage and make it available to those adventurous travelers seeking a different kind of experience.
The cottage comes stocked with lots of treats upon your arrival. I always try to have bakery bread, farm fresh eggs, local honey, coffee beans, and lots of water as staples. You will also have a basket of various chips, candies, and energy bars. In the bathroom you will find a new shower scrunchie and an assortment of liquid shower gels in addition to regular soaps, razors, dental floss, and tooth paste. During the summer, you may also find fresh, local fruit and vegetables from my garden.
Unbelievably cozy, the cottage comes fully furnished: Kitchen with Dansk dishes, silverware, decent cutting knives, KitchenAid Mixer, Cuisinart, blender, coffee maker, coffee bean grinder, rice steamer, tortilla maker, ceramic bowls for cooking, gas stove; whatever you may need, it should be there. Extra rolls of paper towels and new sponges are under the sink as are any cleaning supplies you may need. Dish soap and liquid hand soap are also provided.
The newly installed wall unit is both air conditioning and heat and can be operated via remote control. New ceiling fans in the living room and bedroom. Handmade quilts by my mother grace the bed.
Soaps, towels, razors, hand lotion, puzzle books and pencils are stashed in the bathroom along with extra t.p. and Kleenex.
There is also a stacked washer/dryer with laundry soap provided, built-in ironing board (I know, who irons?), iron, spray starch, queen sized bed (additional queen sized and twin sized Coleman inflatable beds)…dog treats.
The T.V. is set up for local channels, Netflix (basic subscription) and Hulu plus. There is also a vintage Nintendo Player (Mario Bros.!), DVD and VCR if you care to bring your own tapes. The box for the Netflix/Hulu options has the HDMI cord, which you can plug into your laptop if you want to stream from that. And, yes, that would mean we have WIFI! I know I can’t live without my computer, and I wouldn’t expect you to live without yours either! There is also a pretty nice stereo in the living room with CD, cassette and AM/FM. I didn’t think the CD part worked, but one of the guests said it did…I keep forgetting to test it…so it might. But the FM/cassette is great for sure!
There are two bicycles with locks and helmets for your use, tennis courts are just across the street, outdoor dining with furnishings (unbreakable) are on the patio and there is bug spray and sun block if needed. The water feature right outside your door provides a relaxing atmosphere and a place for your dog to cool his/her feet.
Outdoor kitchen (bbq) and pool (lounge chairs and towels provided) with three different sun screen spf lotions to choose from. The area is well-lit at night, and there are tiki torches you can also light if there is little to no breeze.
Your large covered deck looks out onto the training grounds for my first dachshund, Bean, who has now placed twice in the Chico Elk's "Best Male Dog Ball Catcher" in Chico - and he competes against the big dogs! He will insist you throw the ball...so bring your throwing arm - he'll provide the tennis balls! (New as of May 2012, Bean made the cover of the AKC Family Dog Magazine!). Competing for your attention will be Coco, Mem (short for Agamemnon), and Obi-Wan. They are particularly fond of the treats in the cottage. Feed them, they’re yours! Doesn’t work with Bean – he’s all about the ball – but if you throw his ball in the pool on a hot day - that will be treat-like enough!
If you are bringing a dog, there is a secure, rather large dog run that was just built this summer. So, if you are not able to take your dog somewhere, you have access to this. I also have two large crates, if you are more comfortable crating your dog.
The heart of Chico is our downtown and it is a mere 5 minute drive from the Cottage (exactly one-mile). Chico State is also very close and is easier to visit by foot or by bike. The area where I live fronts Big Chico Creek and is a haven for walking, jogging, and biking.
Traveling with another couple? There is a master bedroom and spare bedroom available in the main house for overflow guests for an additional fee. Bathroom is shared - dogs may want to sleep with you.
With the addition of instant booking the check-in and check-out times are not always flexible. If no one is scheduled to check in the cottage the day you leave, then you can leave as late as you like, however, if someone is coming in, then check out will be 11 a.m., however, you can store your belongings in the main house for as long as you like.
No maid service unless prearranged. 6% Butte County TOT tax is included in the price.
Price per night is $25 more if you bring a pet, not to exceed $75 per week. Dogs must be 35ish lbs. or less. There is also a $15 fee per person, per night for parties over 2.
So there you have it…not a cheap alternative to a motel/hotel, but a comparable one, with way more amenities…and the chance to experience Chico as if you lived here! I work Mon-Fri, so the backyard (think pool) is yours all day.
Thank you for taking the time to read this rather lengthy description…I look forward to meeting you…

Darcy's cottage is a really quiet, charming get-away, everything and more than I expected. Great! I look forward to staying there again the next time I'm working in Chico.
Thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Darcy's. Her cottage is tucked away in the riparian Bidwell neighborhood. Private and charming, I wanted for nothing during my stay- truly a home away from home, in that it has all the conveniences and comforts. The vibe is welcoming and kicked back, and dog friendly. Darcy thoughtfully made the effort to introduce her dogs one at a time, to help my dog acclimate. Since my visit was during the winter, I didn't take full advantage of her great back yard, but it was inviting all the same. I would go on, but you should stay and discover the rest for yourself. The only con was I wish I could have stayed a little longer.
My pups and I just spent our second visit at Darcy's lovely Cottage by the Creek. Darcy has upgrades the inside with a new flat screen TV in the living room and a small writing desk in the bedroom. The cottage is even more lovely than before. She even had a few tasteful Christmas decorations throughout, which was fabulous since I had a small gathering for my Chico friends one evening.
Darling pet friendly cottage, great helpful host....doesn't get any better than this! We will definitely be back.
This cottage was exactly as described and was the perfect getaway for me and my family. We stayed an entire week while I attended Sierra Nevada's Beer Camp and we had no issues whatsoever. She even let me use her bike to get to and from the brewery.
Darcy was a friendly, accommodating, and gracious host during our time there. The cottage was spotless and had a nice homey feel to it. Full kitchen allowed us to shop at a nearby Trader Joe's and make some meals to cut down on our dining out costs. She provided plenty of information in the form of books, pamphlets, and brochures on local activities and places to see. Overall, I would highly recommend this place to anyone coming to Chico. Cheers!
The cottage was great and Darcy left us a fantastic loaf of gluten free bread from a local bakery! We had rented the place expressly to hangout by the pool but it was always in the shade, so our plan changed. We ended up exploring Chico instead and there were multiple resources in the cottage to help us do so. Overall the cottage was adorable and cozy and we would go back.
Absolutely wonderful stay!! We highly recommend Darcy's beautiful cottage on the creek. Everything was perfect. The cottage is lovely--quiet and peaceful, the perfect place to enjoy, relax and unwind. Stocked with all the basics and lots of extras, like home grown heirloom veggies, fresh bread, coffee, organic eggs, and seasonal fruits, gorgeous flowers from the local farmers market. Her fig tree was in full season and we enjoyed delicious ripe figs every day! So nice. Darcy is great--super friendly and yet gives you privacy--perfect. She had lots of suggestions for places to see, eat and even directed us to a really cool (and huge) consignment shop. We will definitely stay with her again.
The Cottage by the Creek was better than we expected. The cottage was comfortably furnished, the pool refreshing, and the outdoor dining island was perfect for a midday BBQ.
Darcy was a fantastic hostess. She was helpful, accommodating, and just an all around great person! We enjoyed our stay and look forward to booking this location again.
We just stayed at the Cottage By The Creek for the second time in less than a year because we loved it so much the first time, and we will be back again! The cottage is perfect and Darcy has stocked it with everything you could possibly need, and beyond! Her yard is gorgeous and this time we swam in the pool a bunch too - it was perfect. Treat yourself and stay here, it is the best kept secret in Chico!
What a wonderful retreat in Chico. Located in a quiet neighbourhood, close to downtown, shopping and a short drive to major highways. Lovely flowers, snacks, coffee, bread, honey, organic eggs from local sources were waiting on my arrival. This place comes fully stocked; it's a home away from home in every sense. Darcy is a gracious and friendly host and her sweet little pups are guaranteed to put a smile on your day. Get your pitching arm ready for Bean - he never runs out of steam! I made use of the pool, BBQ and spent lot's of hours relaxing on the cottage's porch and entertaining family - my reason for visiting Chico. Can't imagine staying in a hotel when there is such an ideal alternative. Loved every minute and without hesitation, the cottage will be the place I return to.
Loved everything about the property, from the Darcy, the sweet dogs, the creek across the street, the snacks and coffee in the house... everything was perfect! Thanks again, Darcy!
