The Cottage By the Creek isn’t just an alternative to a hotel/motel, but rather a truly wonderful experience when you visit our lovely town of Chico.
The Cottage became an Airbnb property when my mother left her and my father’s home to move to the medical center where my father was suddenly a permanent resident due to multiple strokes. Many of their furnishings were too beautiful to part with, but too large for her new, one-bedroom apartment, so she shipped them to Chico in hopes that I could use them myself, or sell them for her. Well, selling her pieces was not an option in this economy, and there was no room at the main house in which to store them. While looking for cheap storage alternatives for her many things, the long-term renter in the cottage gave notice. Suddenly, there was my solution...furnish the cottage and make it available to those adventurous travelers seeking a different kind of experience.
The cottage comes stocked with lots of treats upon your arrival. I always try to have bakery bread, farm fresh eggs, local honey, coffee beans, and lots of water as staples. You will also have a basket of various chips, candies, and energy bars. In the bathroom you will find a new shower scrunchie and an assortment of liquid shower gels in addition to regular soaps, razors, dental floss, and tooth paste. During the summer, you may also find fresh, local fruit and vegetables from my garden.
Unbelievably cozy, the cottage comes fully furnished: Kitchen with Dansk dishes, silverware, decent cutting knives, KitchenAid Mixer, Cuisinart, blender, coffee maker, coffee bean grinder, rice steamer, tortilla maker, ceramic bowls for cooking, gas stove; whatever you may need, it should be there. Extra rolls of paper towels and new sponges are under the sink as are any cleaning supplies you may need. Dish soap and liquid hand soap are also provided.
The newly installed wall unit is both air conditioning and heat and can be operated via remote control. New ceiling fans in the living room and bedroom. Handmade quilts by my mother grace the bed.
Soaps, towels, razors, hand lotion, puzzle books and pencils are stashed in the bathroom along with extra t.p. and Kleenex.
There is also a stacked washer/dryer with laundry soap provided, built-in ironing board (I know, who irons?), iron, spray starch, queen sized bed (additional queen sized and twin sized Coleman inflatable beds)…dog treats.
The T.V. is set up for local channels, Netflix (basic subscription) and Hulu plus. There is also a vintage Nintendo Player (Mario Bros.!), DVD and VCR if you care to bring your own tapes. The box for the Netflix/Hulu options has the HDMI cord, which you can plug into your laptop if you want to stream from that. And, yes, that would mean we have WIFI! I know I can’t live without my computer, and I wouldn’t expect you to live without yours either! There is also a pretty nice stereo in the living room with CD, cassette and AM/FM. I didn’t think the CD part worked, but one of the guests said it did…I keep forgetting to test it…so it might. But the FM/cassette is great for sure!
There are two bicycles with locks and helmets for your use, tennis courts are just across the street, outdoor dining with furnishings (unbreakable) are on the patio and there is bug spray and sun block if needed. The water feature right outside your door provides a relaxing atmosphere and a place for your dog to cool his/her feet.
Outdoor kitchen (bbq) and pool (lounge chairs and towels provided) with three different sun screen spf lotions to choose from. The area is well-lit at night, and there are tiki torches you can also light if there is little to no breeze.
Your large covered deck looks out onto the training grounds for my first dachshund, Bean, who has now placed twice in the Chico Elk's "Best Male Dog Ball Catcher" in Chico - and he competes against the big dogs! He will insist you throw the ball...so bring your throwing arm - he'll provide the tennis balls! (New as of May 2012, Bean made the cover of the AKC Family Dog Magazine!). Competing for your attention will be Coco, Mem (short for Agamemnon), and Obi-Wan. They are particularly fond of the treats in the cottage. Feed them, they’re yours! Doesn’t work with Bean – he’s all about the ball – but if you throw his ball in the pool on a hot day - that will be treat-like enough!
If you are bringing a dog, there is a secure, rather large dog run that was just built this summer. So, if you are not able to take your dog somewhere, you have access to this. I also have two large crates, if you are more comfortable crating your dog.
The heart of Chico is our downtown and it is a mere 5 minute drive from the Cottage (exactly one-mile). Chico State is also very close and is easier to visit by foot or by bike. The area where I live fronts Big Chico Creek and is a haven for walking, jogging, and biking.
Traveling with another couple? There is a master bedroom and spare bedroom available in the main house for overflow guests for an additional fee. Bathroom is shared - dogs may want to sleep with you.
With the addition of instant booking the check-in and check-out times are not always flexible. If no one is scheduled to check in the cottage the day you leave, then you can leave as late as you like, however, if someone is coming in, then check out will be 11 a.m., however, you can store your belongings in the main house for as long as you like.
No maid service unless prearranged. 6% Butte County TOT tax is included in the price.
Price per night is $25 more if you bring a pet, not to exceed $50 per week. Dogs must be 35ish lbs. or less. There is also a $15 fee per person, per night for parties over 2.
So there you have it…not a cheap alternative to a motel/hotel, but a comparable one, with way more amenities…and the chance to experience Chico as if you lived here! I work Mon-Fri, so the backyard (think pool) is yours all day.
Thank you for taking the time to read this rather lengthy description…I look forward to meeting you…

This is a beautiful cottage in a great location. We enjoyed meeting both Darcy and her lovely dogs. The cottage was full of food and snacks from the local market so there was no chance of us going hungry. It was easily the best Airbnb we've stayed in so far. Also had good wifi and free netflix.
We loved our mini-vacation at Darcy's truly adorable cottage! Darcy was a wonderful host and had the cottage stocked with local specialty food items and lists of great things to do in the area. My dog loved the large backyard and we took advantage of the beautiful neighborhood with lots of walks. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a great place to stay in Chico. Darcy is thoughtful and gracious in sharing her backyard, cottage, and even bikes with those staying at the cottage.
Darcy's cottage is a really quiet, charming get-away, everything and more than I expected. Great! I look forward to staying there again the next time I'm working in Chico.
Thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Darcy's. Her cottage is tucked away in the riparian Bidwell neighborhood. Private and charming, I wanted for nothing during my stay- truly a home away from home, in that it has all the conveniences and comforts. The vibe is welcoming and kicked back, and dog friendly. Darcy thoughtfully made the effort to introduce her dogs one at a time, to help my dog acclimate. Since my visit was during the winter, I didn't take full advantage of her great back yard, but it was inviting all the same. I would go on, but you should stay and discover the rest for yourself. The only con was I wish I could have stayed a little longer.
Lovely little cottage with everything you would wish for provided.
The minute we arrived, we knew we would want to come back again and again. The location is lovely, the yard is pretty and peaceful, and the cottage is ridiculously charming! It is stocked with anything you could possibly need, and there were thoughtful snacks, fruit, and fresh flowers for us when we arrived. Darcy is the perfect person to rent from: friendly but never overbearing, available by text or a knock on the door when we had questions but very respectful of our space. She is thoughtful and kind and gave us some good information about local events that we ended up checking out and were glad we did. She even left dog treats for our 5 year old to give her dogs when we arrived, which thrilled our girl to no end. The cottage is cozy and SO quiet, especially at night. The washer/dryer + Netflix, Hulu, and WiFi were an added bonus! We visit Chico twice a year and feel like we've found our new favorite place to stay - all three of us just loved it and can't wait for next time!
We rented the Cottage by the Creek to attend a wedding in Chico. It was a perfect alternative to a hotel. The personal touches and quiet surroundings make the all the difference. It was so cozy and comfortable it was like a home away from home. The cottage had everything to make our stay comfortable, restful and easy. The kitchen is complete with all you could need, down to the coffee and goodies in the frig. Darcy has attended to every detail and is present in case there is anything else needed. It was a rainy weekend when we were there and as she saw us going to our car with the umbrella she provided in the cottage, she came out with another umbrella in case we both needed one. Very thoughtful and kind. I recommend this airbnb highly.
Very nice place, and a lovely host. We can't wait to come back!
Beautiful place...very clean and well equipped. Her yard is like a paradise--artistically landscaped complete with decorative lights, flowers, tiki torches, outdoor gas BBQ, nice lawn, private patio deck with dining table, and a babbling brook fountain. Darcy even left us fruit and snacks on the coffee table. She offered free use of her 2 bikes and helmets. We had covered parking and would have went swimming in her backyard pool if it was hot enough! Darcy is very nice and wecloming--I would absolutely recommend staying at her place.
Lovely cottage in an equally lovely garden, with pool. Darcy was attentive but gave us lots of privacy. The 4 dogs were more entertaining than a book or TV.( Darcy was very good about letting us have as much or as little time as we wanted with them.) Very quiet neighbourhood. Only sound at night was a chorus of frogs and the occasional train whistle. Fresh flowers and fruit were at the cottage for us when we arrived - a great welcome.
Chico is a great base for exploring olive groves/olive oil producers, a few vineyards, organic farms, driving through fruit and nut orchards. Fantastic farmers market. There was enough to keep us busy for a week.
This is the final rate, including any fees from the host and Airbnb.
