About This Listing
The cottage is a quaint, well furnished space with wood floors and A-frame ceiling. Although it is an open floor plan, the bedroom has it's own door for privacy. Only 1 mile from town and 1.5 miles from Bidwell Park.
The Cottage By the Creek isn’t just an alternative to a hotel/motel, but rather a truly wonderful experience when you visit our lovely town of Chico.
The Cottage became an Airbnb property when my mother left her and my father’s home to move to the medical center where my father was suddenly a permanent resident due to multiple strokes. Many of their furnishings were too beautiful to part with, but too large for her new, one-bedroom apartment, so she shipped them to Chico in hopes that I could use them myself, or sell them for her. Well, selling her pieces was not an option in this economy, and there was no room at the main house in which to store them. While looking for cheap storage alternatives for her many things, the long-term renter in the cottage gave notice. Suddenly, there was my solution...furnish the cottage and make it available to those adventurous travelers seeking a different kind of experience.
The cottage comes stocked with lots of treats upon your arrival. I always try to have bakery bread, farm fresh eggs, coconut oil, Keurig style coffee maker with K cups and fruit stocked in time for your stay. You will also have a basket of various chips, candies, and crackers.
In the bathroom you will find a new shower scrunchie and an assortment of liquid shower gels in addition to regular soaps, razors, dental floss, and tooth paste.
Cute and cozy, the cottage comes fully furnished: Kitchen with Dansk dishes, silverware, Farberware knife set, KitchenAid Mixer, Cuisinart, blender, rice steamer, tortilla maker, ceramic bowls for cooking, gas stove; whatever you may need, it should be there. Extra rolls of paper towels and new sponges are under the sink as are any cleaning supplies you may need. Dish soap and liquid hand soap are also provided.
The wall unit is both air conditioning and heat and can be operated via remote control. New ceiling fans in the living room and bedroom. Handmade quilts by my mother grace the bed.
Soaps, towels, razors, hand lotion, puzzle books and pencils are stashed in the bathroom along with extra t.p. and Kleenex.
There is also a stacked washer/dryer with laundry soap provided, built-in ironing board (I know, who irons?), iron, spray starch, queen sized bed (two twin sized Coleman, inflatable beds)…dog treats.
The T.V. is set up for local channels, Netflix (basic subscription) and Hulu plus. There is also a vintage Nintendo Player (Mario Bros.!), DVD and VCR if you care to bring your own tapes. The box for the Netflix/Hulu options has the HDMI cord, which you can plug into your laptop if you want to stream from that. And, yes, that would mean we have WIFI! I know I can’t live without my computer, and I wouldn’t expect you to live without yours either! There is also a pretty nice stereo in the living room with CD, cassette and AM/FM. I didn’t think the CD part worked, but one of the guests said it did…I keep forgetting to test it…so it might. But the FM/cassette is great for sure!
There are two bicycles with locks and helmets for your use, tennis courts are just across the street, outdoor dining with furnishings (unbreakable) are on the patio and there is bug spray and sun block if needed. The water feature right outside your door provides a relaxing atmosphere and a place for your dog to cool his/her feet.
Outdoor kitchen (bbq) and pool (lounge chairs and towels provided) with three different sun screen spf lotions to choose from. The area is well-lit at night, and there are tiki torches you can also light if there is little to no breeze.
Your large covered deck looks out onto the training grounds for my first dachshund, Bean, who has now placed twice in the Chico Elk's "Best Male Dog Ball Catcher" in Chico - and he competes against the big dogs! He will insist you throw the ball...so bring your throwing arm - he'll provide the tennis balls! (New as of May 2012, Bean made the cover of the AKC Family Dog Magazine!). Competing for your attention will be Coco, Mem (short for Agamemnon), and Obi-Wan. They are particularly fond of the treats in the cottage. Feed them, they’re yours! Doesn’t work with Bean – he’s all about the ball – but if you throw his ball in the pool on a hot day - that will be treat-like enough!
If you are bringing a dog, there is a secure, rather large dog run that was just built this summer. So, if you are not able to take your dog somewhere, you have access to this. I also have two large crates, if you are more comfortable crating your dog.
The heart of Chico is our downtown and it is a mere 5 minute drive from the Cottage (exactly one-mile). Chico State is also very close and is easier to visit by foot or by bike. The area where I live fronts Big Chico Creek and is a haven for walking, jogging, and biking.
With the addition of instant booking the check-in and check-out times are not always flexible. If no one is scheduled to check in the cottage the day you leave, then you can leave as late as you like, however, if someone is coming in, then check out is 11 a.m.
No maid service unless prearranged. 10% City of Chico TOT tax is not included in the price.
Price per night is $25 more if you bring a pet, not to exceed $50 per week. Dogs must be 30ish lbs. or less. There is also a $15 fee per person, per night for parties over 2.
So there you have it…not a cheap alternative to a motel/hotel, but a comparable one, with way more amenities…and the chance to experience Chico as if you lived here! I work Mon-Fri, so the backyard (think pool) is yours all day.
Thank you for taking the time to read this rather lengthy description…I look forward to meeting you…

Interaction with Guests
As much or as little as they like. The dogs especially enjoy our cottage people once introduced by me!
Bidwell Ave borders Big Chico Creek and has huge trees all along the way. It's a quiet area, yet situated just behind Chico State and is exactly one mile to town.
Other Things to Note
There is a large Oak tree dead center in the driveway. There is plenty of room on each side to come and go, but you do need to be careful.
Because I have dogs, it is recommended that you let me know when you will be arriving and your approximate schedule during your stay so that I can limit the dogs' access to the yard. Of course, if you are traveling with your own dog, mine may want to stay outside and play if it is a small dog. We'll play that by ear. There is a $25 per night charge for dogs or cats, not to exceed $50. Sometimes This is not included in the Airbnb charge, so can be paid in cash upon your arrival.
I do expect you to take care of the furnishings and report any damage that may occur. I understand accidents happen, however, there may be a replacement charge depending on circumstances. I do not provide a cleaning service during your stay, but there is a washer/dryer in the cottage with detergent/dryer sheets provided so that you can wash your linens whenever you like.
We had a wonderful time at Cottage by the Creek! Darcy's little herd of wiener dogs was hilarious and adorable! Darcy made us feel welcome and had the cottage all ready to go, complete with fresh eggs, bread, and giant strawberries! She is able to strike that perfect balance as a warm and receptive host without being intrusive.
She loaned us bikes which we road all over Chico's amazing network of bike paths and parks. In the mornings we sat on the porch and listened to the neighborhood wake up. It was a relaxing retreat and I hope to come back soon!
Lovely cottage, comfortable and very well appointed. The hosts are friendly and accommodating without being intrusive. The 5 dachshunds are quite a cute and funny bunch :) We enjoyed our stay and would go again.
The reservation was canceled 34 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
My son and I stayed a week in this nice cottage. It was very neat and clean. My bed in the bedroom very comfortable. Very well outfitted with all you need and a few extra things like snacks and coffee! Darcy went the extra mile to make us comfortable and was even able to arrange a car for me on a Sunday! Thanks so much for the stay!
A charming fairy tale like cottage set back from the host's main home. Darcy provided non alcoholic drinks, snacks, fruit, bread and eggs. The cottage is fully stocked with cooking utensils, spices and condiments.
Our step grandson was totally enchanted by this lovely setting. Close to downtown and CSU. Great yard for pets.
About the Host, Darcy
I have lived in Chico since 1978 when I first attended Chico State. I love our town and the wonderful activity and diversity the University brings. I have 4 wiener dogs...they're a wonderful breed albeit a tad bit noisey at times...but they are great company and provide an excellent warning system! If you stay with us, you must like dogs! If you have a small dog - bring it - mine hang with many small dogs on a weekly basis and they get along just fine!
Chico is a great place to experience small town life with big city choices. There's also a lot of recreational opportunities in the area, beginning with Bidwell Park...just 2 miles from my home.
