Location

Ciudad de México, Mexico

Historic Center of Mexico City is home to numerous museums and palaces, it has benefited in recent years from a committed preservation push.

This is where the Spaniards began to build what is now modern Mexico City in the 16th century on the ruins of the conquered Tenochtitlan, capital of the Aztec Empire. The Centro Historico contains most of the city's historic sites from both eras as well as a large number of museums. This has made it a World Heritage Site.

In the city center you could spend several days visiting amazing museums such as the Museum of the Palacio de Bellas Artes, Franz Mayer Museum, National Museum of Art, National Museum of San Carlos, San Ildefonso College or Museum of the Templo Mayor among others. You can also visit the Metropolitan Cathedral or the National Palace just in front of the Zócalo, where the Aztec Empire had once settled, or simply enjoy walking through the splendorous colonial architecture found in the area.

You could start your day with an early breakfast at any of the traditional restaurants around the area like "Café Tacuba", "El Cardenal", "La Parroquia" or "Sandborns de los Azulejos" wich is 4 minutes walking distance from the apartmente. Then you can head the skyscraper "Torre Latinoamericana" where for a small fee you can catch an elevator to the top and will have a breathtaking view of the city’s heart, as well as two snowcapped volcanoes to the east. Then you have to visit the Museum of Fine Arts (Bellas Artes), former President Porfirio Diaz commissioned the concert hall and museum in 1904 and hired the Italian architect Adamo Boari, who also built the stunning National Post Office (Correo Mayor) building across the street. Of the murals within, don’t forget to catch Diego Rivera’s “Man, the Controller of the Universe,” on the third floor. The Rockefeller family first commissioned it for the center in New York City, but then took offense at the work’s anticapitalist themes and had it destroyed, so the Mexican artist reproduced it in more detail here.

Cross back over the Eje, turning left (north) to enter the Post Office, decorated on the exterior with gargoyles and elaborate stone carving. Next, head toward the Zócalo along Tacuba Street to the adjacent Palace of Mining (Palacio de Mineria), considered one of Mexico’s finest examples of neoclassical architecture. The building, completed in 1813, is one of the leading works by Manuel Tolsa who also designed the Statue of Carlos IV of Spain called “El Caballito” who is located between this building and the National Art Museum (MUNAL, Tacuba 8), opposite, which you can explore to your heart’s content but don’t forget to spend some time in the rooms exhibiting 20th-century Mexican art, past the far courtyard.

Then go east to the Zocalo where you can visit the Metropolitan Cathedral, the National Palace, Templo Mayor Museum and San Ildefonso.
A late lunch is recomended at Centro Cultural España wich is behind the Cathedral.

In the evening you can go back to the apartment and have some rest before having a nice dinner in one of the high-quality restaurants that the area offers, like "Azul Histórico" in Isabela Católica street.

Other day you could go to Reforma Ave., home to many Mexico’s tallest buildings and important monuments such as the Angel of Independence. Then you have to visit the Chapultepec Castle: the only royal castle in North America. Built in the 18th century it was home to the Emperor Maximilian I and Empress Carlota. The Castle is located at the center of the Chapultepec Park, one of the largest city parks in the world, even bigger than New York City’s Central Park!! Near this amazing city lung you can find numerous museums like the National Museum of Anthropology and the Rufino Tamayo Museum. Then you can indulge yourself at one of the worldclass restaurants in Polanco.

From our place you can also go southbound and visit Xochimilco, Tlalpan, University City, San Ángel or Coyoacán, otherwise head northbound to the Teotihuacán pyramids.
