Description

The space

Chosen as one of Portland's 10 best Airbnb rentals by Portland Monthly Magazine, it's hard to find a better deal. Tucked between Hawthorne and Division, you’ll have easy access to award-winning restaurants, movie theaters, coffee shops, parks, and so much more. Our 1909 built home is clean, tranquil, and truly unique. Previously featured on Portland's Build it Green home tour.

The one-room light-filled studio is perfect for a single or couple. It has a comfortable full-sized bed with nice linens, a small table and chairs, coat and luggage racks (there is no closet), and a place to sit and read while you enjoy complimentary tea and coffee. Whatever season you are visiting Portland in, you will find the studio to be quite comfortable. It stays nice and cool in the warmer months with a ceiling fan, and the convection heater keeps it warm in the winter. Beautiful photography, by a local artist, graces the walls.

Guest access

There is a large, beautiful bathroom for your personal use on the main floor of the house, which is located about twenty steps away via flagstone pavers. The extra wide and deep bathtub can fit two people and all natural soap, bubble bath, and epsom salts are provided. There is a shower nozzle, but please note that there is not a stand-up shower available. There is also a claw-foot bathtub in the garden with hot water for the more adventurous bathers. Towels and bathrobes are provided.

Our open and bright kitchen is available for use and a pleasure to cook in. We are vegan and kindly request that animal products aren't brought in.

Portland is full of beautiful parks and rivers, including Mt. Tabor and Laurelhurst, which are close by. A picnic basket is available for your use and the neighborhood's natural markets have just what you need for your outing.

Interaction with guests

We share our home with three fun cats, but we keep the studio cat free. We are more than happy to provide recommendations of things to do and see to make your trip to Portland truly memorable. We respect your privacy and with our bedroom and bathroom on the upstairs level of the house, there is plenty of room for everyone. We are LGBTQ friendly. Come find out for yourself why we are in love with our home, neighborhood, and city!

Getting around

We are less than 3 miles to downtown and about 10 miles to the airport. Public transportation within walking distance makes getting around the city without a car easy. You can often find a Zip Car or Car2Go close by. A couple of bike shops in the neighborhood rent bikes and cycling in our neighborhood is easy and popular. There is always ample, free street parking in front of our house.

Other things to note

We have recently upgraded the bed in the studio from a full to a queen! The bed frame and nightstands are also new. The photos do not yet reflect this change.

A perfect little getaway tucked in the comfy SE Portland neighborhoods. We felt so welcomed and comfortable in the Urban Garden Studio and in Joelle and James' house. The studio was very well kept and a perfect size for two friends or a couple looking for a quaint stay in Portland. The home felt both hidden and secluded but also just minutes walking distance from some of the most popular food stops in Portland. It was definitely a unique and beautiful way to experience the city - almost like our home base was in a little fairy garden. Joelle and James definitely know how to make you feel at home; their three kitties, comfortable conversation/recommendations and delicious vegan desserts made almost every trip to the main house a treat. My boyfriend and I had an incredible experience here we will never forget and would love to stay here again some day.

Joelle and James were great hosts. Very understanding and communicative . The house is beautiful and brings a peaceful, serene atmosphere to all those who reside there. Definitely check this place out if you can! And the gluten free raspberry squares were outstanding!!!

Joelle and James's place is so beautiful. Joelle kindly help me put when I left my phone in an Uber, and offered to make me ginger tea when I was ill. I felt like I was at a little woodland retreat but close to everything!

My family of three stayed in the beautiful garden studio and loved it! The neighborhood is filled with restaurants, shops and coffee shops. Everything is walkable too. The hosts are great and we're very helpful. Joelle went above and beyond by bringing my daughter some toys to play with!! The bathroom and kitchen are in the main house but it was always quiet as a mouse. Highly recommend for your next trip to Portland.

When I booked Joelle and James' place, it said it was a rare find and it absolutely was! The studio was beautiful, as was the neighborhood. There is a lot within walking distance of the house and it is very easy to get downtown etc. Despite the snowy weather, the studio stayed nice and cozy and warm. I had some nice chats with Joelle and she and James were more than welcoming and helpful! I look forward to staying again, hopefully not during a blizzard next time

Joelle And James User ProfileJoelle And James is a superhost.

We love our home, neighborhood, and city and enjoy sharing all three with travelers from near and far. James, originally from New York City, is a composer and music director and is well connected to the music and art community in Portland. Joelle, originally from Los Angeles, is a kindergarten teacher. We've lived on our wonderful street since 1999 and can't think of a better place in Portland to be. We are both long-time vegans and have enjoyed exploring the world through our taste buds. As hosts, we strive to give our guests the privacy they desire while still being available to offer insider tips on the best places to eat, play, and explore in and around Portland.
