Experience the best Portland has to offer from a private studio in a lush, backyard garden. Our beautiful, eco-home on a quiet street is conveniently located in Southeast Portland’s best and most walkable neighborhood.
Tucked between Hawthorne and Division, you’ll have easy access to award-winning restaurants, movie theaters, coffee shops, parks, and so much more. Our 1909 built home is clean, tranquil, and truly unique. Previously featured on Portland's Build it Green home tour.
The one-room light-filled studio is perfect for a single or couple. It has a comfortable full-sized bed with nice linens, a small table and chairs, coat and luggage racks (there is no closet), and a place to sit and read while you enjoy complimentary tea and coffee. Whatever season you are visiting Portland in, you will find the studio to be quite comfortable. It stays nice and cool in the warmer months with a ceiling fan, and the convection heater keeps it warm in the winter. There is an iLive clock radio suitable for playing music off of iPods and iPhones. Beautiful photography by a local artist graces the walls and changes with the seasons.
There is a large, beautiful bathroom for your use on the main floor of the house, which is located about twenty steps away via flagstone pavers. The extra wide and deep bathtub can fit two people and all natural soap, bubble bath, and epsom salts are provided. There is a shower nozzle, but please note that there is not a stand-up shower available. There is also a claw-foot bathtub in the garden with hot water for the more adventurous bathers. Plush towels, bathrobes, and slippers are provided.
Several spas are in the neighborhood for guests who are looking for that extra level of relaxation. We also work with a licensed massage therapist who will come to the house if you wish to receive a massage without even needing to leave the property.
Our open and bright kitchen is available for use and a pleasure to cook in. We are vegan and kindly request that animal products aren't brought in.
Portland is full of beautiful parks and rivers, including Mt. Tabor and Laurelhurst, which are close by. A picnic basket is available for your use and the neighborhood's natural and specialty markets have just what you need for your outing.
We share our home with three fun cats, but we keep the studio cat free. We are more than happy to provide recommendations of things to do and see to make your trip to Portland truly memorable. We respect your privacy and with our bedroom and bathroom on the upstairs level of the house, there is plenty of room for everyone. We are LGBTQ friendly. Come find out for yourself why we are in love with our home, neighborhood, and city!
We are less than 3 miles to downtown and about 10 miles to the airport. Public transportation within walking distance makes getting around the city without a car easy. You can often find a Zip Car or Car2Go close by. A couple of bike shops in the neighborhood rent bikes and cycling in our neighborhood is easy and popular. There is always ample, free street parking in front of our house.

I had a fantastic experience staying in the Urban Garden Studio. Joelle and James are such gracious hosts and the space is beautiful, tranquil and inviting. The neighborhood is cute and so close to many shops and restaurants. I wish I could have stayed for more than one night!
Staying with Joelle and James in their beautiful garden studio was such a unique experience. First off they're both so lovely - there when you need them and great to chat with but for the most part it felt like I had the place to myself. The studio was fantastic, private, and charming. You couldn't ask for a better location, sandwiched into two of Portland's major streets. My only regret - not using the outdoor claw tub!
I totally enjoyed my stay at the Urban Garden Studio.
James and Joelle were perfect hosts. I appreciate that they catered to my schedule and needs. The raspberry oatmeal bars were a delightful treat in the morning. But best of all was the daphne. mmmmmm..........
My friend and I were only in Portland for one evening...but we definitely wish we had stayed longer [because we weren't able to fully enjoy the Urban Garden Studio and its amenities]! Joelle is very kind and her home is remarkably inviting. She even left us delicious, presumably vegan, carrot cake before we sneaked out early in the morning. I will be back!
Joelle and James were so inviting and hospitable. I had a great time staying in their little Garden Studio, relaxing and taking in the surroundings. They made me feel comfortable and were helpful in telling me all about the sites to see in the area. I would go back in a heartbeat! And maybe I will!
Very clean, cozy, and aesthetically pleasing accommodation in a quiet walkable neighbourhood...just a short hop to downtown Portland over the Hawthorn bridge. A central location in an older residential area wedged between two vibrant and varied offbeat commercial zones. If you appreciate eclectic rehabilitated historic homes, many with creatively landscaped gardens, then this area will satisfy with it's abundance of intrinsic eye candy. To get to your lovely private bathroom you must pass through a secluded courtyard, the kitchen and living room of the main house. Cozy bathrobes and slippers are provided to make this short hop convenient and dare I say fun! Did not meet James, but Joelle and her young niece were baking up a storm in preparation for his birthday celebration the next day. We were welcomed, made to feel right at home and felt completely comfortable coming and going. We highly recommend staying at this unique and lovely oasis in the heart of Portland!
I met Joelle only briefly, but she was very nice. Her place is great. Very immaculately clean. I definitely enjoyed staying there. The is also perfectly located to lot's of cafes and restaurants. A good place for sure.
My boyfriend and I had a wonderful stay in Joelle and James' studio. So cozy, and they truly had thought of everything we could need. From an umbrella to cozy slippers and bathrobes to freshly baked goods, they thought of things both practical and sweet and had them ready. Their soaking tub is lovely, their kitchen a dream to cook in, and their cats a source of entertainment all on their own. We would love to stay here again and heartily recommend it to anyone and everyone!
Joelle and Jame's urban garden studio is an amazing place to stay! The studio and house is beautiful, comfortable and very clean. Joelle and James are very kind and thoughtful; always checking in to see if we were warm enough, offering us delicious oatmeal breakfast bars and sharing recommendations. Hospitality and the place is nothing short of perfect! We will definitely be coming back :)
