The one-room light-filled studio is perfect for a single or couple. It has a comfortable full-sized bed with nice linens, a small table and chairs, coat and luggage racks (there is no closet), and a place to sit and read while you enjoy complimentary tea and coffee. Whatever season you are visiting Portland in, you will find the studio to be quite comfortable. It stays nice and cool in the warmer months with a ceiling fan, and the convection heater keeps it warm in the winter. There is an iLive clock radio suitable for playing music off of iPods and iPhones. Beautiful photography by a local artist graces the walls and changes with the seasons.
There is a large, beautiful bathroom for your use on the main floor of the house, which is located about twenty steps away via flagstone pavers. The extra wide and deep bathtub can fit two people and all natural soap, bubble bath, and epsom salts are provided. There is a shower nozzle, but please note that there is not a stand-up shower available. There is also a claw-foot bathtub in the garden with hot water for the more adventurous bathers. Plush towels and bathrobes are provided.
Several spas are in the neighborhood for guests who are looking for that extra level of relaxation. We also work with a licensed massage therapist who will come to the house if you wish to receive a massage without even needing to leave the property.
Our open and bright kitchen is available for use and a pleasure to cook in. We are vegan and kindly request that animal products aren't brought in.
Portland is full of beautiful parks and rivers, including Mt. Tabor and Laurelhurst, which are close by. A picnic basket is available for your use and the neighborhood's natural and specialty markets have just what you need for your outing.
Interaction with Guests
We share our home with three fun cats, but we keep the studio cat free. We are more than happy to provide recommendations of things to do and see to make your trip to Portland truly memorable. We respect your privacy and with our bedroom and bathroom on the upstairs level of the house, there is plenty of room for everyone. We are LGBTQ friendly. Come find out for yourself why we are in love with our home, neighborhood, and city!
We are less than 3 miles to downtown and about 10 miles to the airport. Public transportation within walking distance makes getting around the city without a car easy. You can often find a Zip Car or Car2Go close by. A couple of bike shops in the neighborhood rent bikes and cycling in our neighborhood is easy and popular. There is always ample, free street parking in front of our house.
James and Joelle were amazing hosts, we loved staying at the garden studio. They were very flexible regarding our late arrival time and were extremely accommodating throughout our entire stay, providing us with great recommendations for activities and restaurants in the area.
The studio itself was a very comfortable living space with beautiful surroundings. I would certainly stay here again if I ever return to Portland.
Joelle and James were wonderful hosts. The Garden Studio is just as amazing as it looks in the pictures and the bed was comfortable enough to fit the two of us. We couldn't have asked for a better neighborhood, everything was so pretty and it we only had to walk for a few minutes to get to (almost) everywhere we wanted to go.
Thanks again for everything, you made us feel very welcomed and comfortable for those couple of days - we only wish we could've stayed longer!
PS. We'll be dreaming of those raspberry bars for a long time!
We absolutely loved staying in the studio. Joelle and James were so sweet and made sure we had everything we needed. The cats were adorable as well. We cannot wait to come back;
James and Joelle were fantastic hosts! They thought of every need that we might have had ahead of time and were incredibly accommodating. The garden studio was beautiful and comfortable just as pictured. One of their neighbors had some kind of fountain that we could here when the windows were open, and it served as a very relaxing sound at night. I would recommend this very affordable and centrally located studio to anyone coming to Portland.
The absolute best experience! We only had the pleasure of meeting Joelle once upon arrival, but James was around more to provide local insights and share mutual interests. We awoke to glorious home-made raspberry bars which were utterly the best we've ever had. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the space so cozy and cute. We felt very at home, very quickly. And the location just can't be beat. Walking distance to Hawthorne and Division streets, a multitude of eating and shopping options just a hop and a skip away. If we come back to Portland in the future, We will definitely be revisiting the beautiful garden studios!
This studio hosted by the incredibly lovely Joelle and James is set in a perfect location to experience Portland. It's extremely walkable and close to many bus lines, not to mention all the amazing restaurants nearby! The place itself is so beautiful to the point it was difficult to leave :)
Joelle and James were the perfect hosts and the Garden Studio was nothing short of magical. Communication prior to arrival and during our stay was perfect. The studio was equipped with everything we needed (including robes and slippers!), and the large windows provided a beautiful view out into the garden. The location is perfect - close to Hawthorne and Division but tucked away in a quiet neighborhood. Did I mention the large bathtub? Heavenly. Oh, and how can I forget the oat bars? Delicious. We can't thank you enough...Hope our paths cross again soon.
We love our home, neighborhood, and city and enjoy sharing all three with travelers from near and far. James, originally from New York City, is a composer and music director and is well connected to the music and art community in Portland. Joelle, originally from Los Angeles, is a kindergarten teacher. We've lived on our wonderful street since 1999 and can't think of a better place in Portland to be. We are both long-time vegans and have enjoyed exploring the world through our taste buds. As hosts, we strive to give our guests the privacy they desire while still being available to offer insider tips on the best places to eat, play, and explore in and around Portland.
