This one-room studio is like a cozy cabin. You'd never guess that you were just a couple of blocks away from the vibrant Hawthorne District.
Chosen as one of Portland's 10 best Airbnb rentals by Portland Monthly Magazine, it's hard to find a better deal. Tucked between Hawthorne and Division, you’ll have easy access to award-winning restaurants, movie theaters, coffee shops, parks, and so much more. The one-room light-filled studio is perfect for a single or couple. It has a comfortable full-sized bed with nice linens, a small table and chairs, coat and luggage racks (there is no closet), and a place to sit and read while you enjoy complimentary tea and coffee. Whatever season you are visiting Portland in, you will find the studio to be quite comfortable. It stays nice and cool in the warmer months with a ceiling fan, and the convection heater keeps it warm in the winter. There is an iLive clock radio suitable for playing music off of iPods and iPhones. Beautiful photography by a local artist graces the walls and changes with the seasons.
There is a large, beautiful bathroom for your use on the main floor of the house, which is located about twenty steps away via flagstone pavers. The extra wide and deep bathtub can fit two people and all natural soap, bubble bath, and epsom salts are provided. There is a shower nozzle, but please note that there is not a stand-up shower available. There is also a claw-foot bathtub in the garden with hot water for the more adventurous bathers. Plush towels and bathrobes are provided.
Several spas are in the neighborhood for guests who are looking for that extra level of relaxation. We also work with a licensed massage therapist who will come to the house if you wish to receive a massage without even needing to leave the property.
Our open and bright kitchen is available for use and a pleasure to cook in. We are vegan and kindly request that animal products aren't brought in.
Portland is full of beautiful parks and rivers, including Mt. Tabor and Laurelhurst, which are close by. A picnic basket is available for your use and the neighborhood's natural and specialty markets have just what you need for your outing.
Interaction with Guests
We share our home with three fun cats, but we keep the studio cat free. We are more than happy to provide recommendations of things to do and see to make your trip to Portland truly memorable. We respect your privacy and with our bedroom and bathroom on the upstairs level of the house, there is plenty of room for everyone. We are LGBTQ friendly. Come find out for yourself why we are in love with our home, neighborhood, and city!
We are less than 3 miles to downtown and about 10 miles to the airport. Public transportation within walking distance makes getting around the city without a car easy. You can often find a Zip Car or Car2Go close by. A couple of bike shops in the neighborhood rent bikes and cycling in our neighborhood is easy and popular. There is always ample, free street parking in front of our house.
Joelle and James were incredible hosts and their garden studio is amazing. They were very flexible and provided great advice about what to do around Portland. My brother and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to stay here again when we come back to town!
This is a cute little studio and the hosts have really attended to every detail -- from the slippers and robe to the Iphone charger in the room. Very nice of them also to make a nice breakfast treat for me and keep in mind my food allergies. It's also a great neighborhood. I was expecting the good restaurants -- which seem to be everywhere in Portland -- but the lush trees and flowering bushes were a great surprise.
Highly recommend staying here, the location is excellent and the room is very comfortable. Do mind that the toilet and bathroom are inside the main house, the shower is actually a hand held faucet over the bath and there is no microwave to reheat meals. Small inconveniences that didn't bother me once I got used to it, but may be good to know for others wishing to book.
I really enjoyed my stay at Joelle and James' Urban Garden Studio. I was there for a 4 day class so was not around too much during the day. The Hawthorne neighborhood has everything and was ideal for my morning walks. To give you an idea, I walked a couple blocks and passed a Thai restaurant, a Lebanese restaurant, Fred Meyer, food trucks, cute shoe/clothing/gift/import/garden/jewelry stores, a theater, several coffee shops and other restaurants, etc. The list is long. And the homes and gardens are like art shows right now!
As for James and Joelle's place, it is not only an art show but a display of conscious harmony. I loved everything. The studio itself was cozy and comfortable. I slept really well! They provided such nice sheets and towels. I especially liked that I could control the heat independently. Even though the bathroom was in the main house, it was worth the walk across the yard to my beautiful private bathroom with a big inviting tub. Access to the kitchen/fridge was nice for making coffee and tea and storing some food. The bench in the garden was a perfect spot for reflection/meditation.
Joelle's hospitality could not be beat. I was so happy to meet her. Seems like every detail was addressed. Great welcome manual and vases with greenery placed carefully, yummy coconut date bars (!!! :)), great communication, lots of recommendations for places to eat, bus schedules, books with walking routes, felines and chocolates to welcome me.
Does it sound like I want to go back? I do!
James and Joelle were amazing hosts, we loved staying at the garden studio. They were very flexible regarding our late arrival time and were extremely accommodating throughout our entire stay, providing us with great recommendations for activities and restaurants in the area.
The studio itself was a very comfortable living space with beautiful surroundings. I would certainly stay here again if I ever return to Portland.
Joelle and James were wonderful hosts. The Garden Studio is just as amazing as it looks in the pictures and the bed was comfortable enough to fit the two of us. We couldn't have asked for a better neighborhood, everything was so pretty and it we only had to walk for a few minutes to get to (almost) everywhere we wanted to go.
Thanks again for everything, you made us feel very welcomed and comfortable for those couple of days - we only wish we could've stayed longer!
PS. We'll be dreaming of those raspberry bars for a long time!
We absolutely loved staying in the studio. Joelle and James were so sweet and made sure we had everything we needed. The cats were adorable as well. We cannot wait to come back;
We love our home, neighborhood, and city and enjoy sharing all three with travelers from near and far. James, originally from New York City, is a composer and music director and is well connected to the music and art community in Portland. Joelle, originally from Los Angeles, is a kindergarten teacher. We've lived on our wonderful street since 1999 and can't think of a better place in Portland to be. We are both long-time vegans and have enjoyed exploring the world through our taste buds. As hosts, we strive to give our guests the privacy they desire while still being available to offer insider tips on the best places to eat, play, and explore in and around Portland.
