The Space

Chosen as one of Portland's 10 best Airbnb rentals by Portland Monthly Magazine, it's hard to find a better deal. Tucked between Hawthorne and Division, you’ll have easy access to award-winning restaurants, movie theaters, coffee shops, parks, and so much more. Our 1909 built home is clean, tranquil, and truly unique. Previously featured on Portland's Build it Green home tour.

The one-room light-filled studio is perfect for a single or couple. It has a comfortable full-sized bed with nice linens, a small table and chairs, coat and luggage racks (there is no closet), and a place to sit and read while you enjoy complimentary tea and coffee. Whatever season you are visiting Portland in, you will find the studio to be quite comfortable. It stays nice and cool in the warmer months with a ceiling fan, and the convection heater keeps it warm in the winter. There is an iLive clock radio suitable for playing music off of iPods and iPhones. Beautiful photography by a local artist graces the walls and changes with the seasons.

Guest Access

There is a large, beautiful bathroom for your use on the main floor of the house, which is located about twenty steps away via flagstone pavers. The extra wide and deep bathtub can fit two people and all natural soap, bubble bath, and epsom salts are provided. There is a shower nozzle, but please note that there is not a stand-up shower available. There is also a claw-foot bathtub in the garden with hot water for the more adventurous bathers. Plush towels and bathrobes are provided.

Several spas are in the neighborhood for guests who are looking for that extra level of relaxation. We also work with a licensed massage therapist who will come to the house if you wish to receive a massage without even needing to leave the property.

Our open and bright kitchen is available for use and a pleasure to cook in. We are vegan and kindly request that animal products aren't brought in.

Portland is full of beautiful parks and rivers, including Mt. Tabor and Laurelhurst, which are close by. A picnic basket is available for your use and the neighborhood's natural and specialty markets have just what you need for your outing.

Interaction with Guests

We share our home with three fun cats, but we keep the studio cat free. We are more than happy to provide recommendations of things to do and see to make your trip to Portland truly memorable. We respect your privacy and with our bedroom and bathroom on the upstairs level of the house, there is plenty of room for everyone. We are LGBTQ friendly. Come find out for yourself why we are in love with our home, neighborhood, and city!

Getting around

We are less than 3 miles to downtown and about 10 miles to the airport. Public transportation within walking distance makes getting around the city without a car easy. You can often find a Zip Car or Car2Go close by. A couple of bike shops in the neighborhood rent bikes and cycling in our neighborhood is easy and popular. There is always ample, free street parking in front of our house.

  • The bungalow was very clean and Joelle did her best to make us feel comfortable. The breakfast bars were VERY good.

  • Joelle's and James' place was amazing! The pictures don't do justice to the garden and the garden house. We had fun chilling in the hammock and we had a chance to enjoy the outdoor bathtub.
James was a great host (Joelle happened to be out of town when we were visiting); we had long conversations about Portland, food, music, books, while eating delicious sweets that he baked for us!
We highly recommend this place and hope to have an opportunity to stay there again.

  • We had a great time staying with Joelle and James. The garden studio is perfect for a couple, very comfortable and cozy with lots of natural light. The main house is beautiful and the cats were very entertaining as they all had a lot of personality! Both Joelle and James made us feel very welcome and had tons of suggestions of things to do in the neighbourhood and the rest of Portland. Being so close to Hawthorne was great and we can't wait to come back to explore the area with all its great bars and restaurants that are easily within walking distance.

  • We'd stay here again in a heartbeat! It was invisibly stylish, clean, secluded and they were SO friendly! We felt very very welcome. The location was close to plenty of things to eat and do.

  • This was our first experience using "airbnb" and we couldn't be happier. Joelle and James were lovely hosts and made our stay so pleasant. Their Urban Garden Studio is absolutely delightful and the lush garden that surrounds it is truly an oasis. My husband took a hot bath outside with his morning coffee! The bathroom in the house that was for our private use was beautiful. Finally, their neighborhood is a gem too and we could walk everywhere, which was great. What a perfect introduction to "airbnb", a wonderful way to see the world!

  • I was welcomed immediately with an open heart and home. I felt like I had known Joelle and James for years just dropping in for a few days. This was my first experience with airbnb and all I can say is the standard has been set. Thank you both for the advice. You are good people. I hope to see you again.

  • They literally have everything thought out. It was like staying in a nice hotel! The garden studio is fantastic, clean, and beautifully decorated. The bed is too comfortable, it was hard to get out in the morning. The neighborhood is insanely beautiful and is in a perfect location. There are awesome restaurants nearby like Ava Gene's and Pok Pok as well as cool bars. It is a quick bus ride downtown as well, but the neighborhood is so awesome you might not even want to go there. There are also nearby parks and shops too. Joelle and James are very friendly, make great suggestions, and try to make your stay as comfortable as possible. They even leave you a baked treat out every morning. Does it get any better?

  • Our host was gracious and provided a surprise goodies of home made oatmeal raspberry bars. They were delicious. The space was clean and designed with simplicity in mind. The garden was fantastic with multiple elements that were fascinating. The neighborhood was safe and quiet and getting into and out of the rented space was private.

  • We so loved our stay at the adorable Urban Garden Studio. Our lovely hosts, our Airbnb apartment, and our trip was everything we hoped it would be.

As other reviewers have noted, James and Joelle are incredibly responsive, warm, and accommodating - and master vegan bakers to boot.

We're so grateful for the wonderful experience - we've fallen in love with Portland!

About
We love our home, neighborhood, and city and enjoy sharing all three with travelers from near and far. James, originally from New York City, is a composer and music director and is well connected to the music and art community in Portland. Joelle, originally from Los Angeles, is taking a sabatical from teaching kindergarten, and enjoying the extra time to volunteer, garden, and cook. We've lived on our wonderful street since 1999 and can't think of a better place in Portland to be. We are both long-time vegans and have enjoyed exploring the world through our taste buds. As hosts, we strive to give our guests the privacy they desire while still being available to offer insider tips on the best places to eat, play, and explore in and around Portland.
