The Space

I have a great little room for a single visitor. The bed is a cot with a surprisingly comfortable IKEA mattress cut to fit the frame! My apartment is right downtown Ottawa and is half a block from all the entertainment Elgin street offers! I'm walking distance to Parliament, the market, the canal and more! I am a people person who enjoys hosting guests and hearing tales of travel. I have a dog (and this is his apartment too) so you must like the canine persuasion...he likes everyone! He's a cockapoo, so "low" allergen and no shedding! This is not a "I hope you don't mind dogs, or can tolorate dogs" listing...this is a YOU MUST LOVE DOGS listing. I've had a recent experience where the guest was clearly uncomfortable with the presense of the dog and the dog let us both know he was having none of the shunning and expressed himself in a way I'd rather not encounter again! So, if you don't really like dogs, I'd rather you book with someone else. If you DO really like dogs and might like to pet my dog and give him the occasional treat, then this is the perfect spot to stay! It's great for someone on a budget who wants to leave Ottawa with a lasting positive impression of the hospitality available in this city! (Warning, I'm a Maritimer at heart)
I've been told the room is warm and cozy with a very nice energy! I keep the energy in my house on the positive side with regular cleansing! I'm not a flaky as that sounds!!
My fridge is attractively slimmer than most and usually well stocked, so its hard to say we can "share" it (as it's prime real estate)..but I will share any and all food I have with you!
The shower has great water pressure, the tub is too small for a bath if you're over the age of ten.
I think everyone will immediately like this place. It feels like a cottage in the middle of a city. Everything is on a small scale, but it's absolutely perfect. If you're over 6'2" you may find it too small...but I'm only 5'3" so I love it!

Guest Access

Guests can use the kitchen and other spaces out side of the guest room. I have a TV and DVD player. If it makes sense to watch something together, we very well might! (Anyone can use either when I'm not around!) I have access to wifi which works without incident 90% of the time...but if it needs to be re-set, the internet is unavailable until I can come home and re-set it. (But not to worry there are tons of cafes and restaurants on Elgin that have free wifi)

Interaction with Guests

I like people and am pretty chatty...but if the person wants to be left alone, that's ok. I'm not usually one to choose that option! I have been known to cook for guests, drink a little wine...hang out. I have had great experiences with my guests...so maybe if you're the "stay alone in your room type" you may like another place better! Of course it all depends on timing and work load etc. (of both parties).

The Neighborhood

This neighbourhood is known as the golden triangle. It is really beautiful with old houses and trees! The canal is two blocks away so close to skating in the winter and cycling or running in the summer. Rama Lotus yoga is just one of many studios within walking distance, and Elgin Street offers many distractions of the entertainment variety! I can give you a whittled down list of recommendations when I better know what you're looking for!

Getting around

OC Transpo stops are close by going in all directions. Nothing is too far. But being right downtown, walking is my preferred choice of transport.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • Karen was an absolutely fantastic host who totally restored my faith in meeting new people through airbnb. Thanks to her I had a wonderful stay in Ottawa and greatly look forward to visiting in the future. Anyone would be lucky to stay with her!

    Response from Karen:

Thanks Rachel! You know the feeling is mutual. You HAVE to meet Gordon at subway gallery. Don was telling another friend of our's all about your mad singer/songwriter skills (and I'm sure Alen and Darrel will never have such a fun Canada day)...so you've impressed more than just me! Cheers! k

  • Karen made a lot of effort to make me feel at home: recommending a really perfect restaurant or my needs, making sure that everything was there. She is also has a wealth of experiences to share and she is really friendly. Sandy, too, is a very expressive and welcoming figure.

  • This was my first time usig AirBnB and Karen was such a welcoming host that I will definitely use this service again. Although as other reviewers mentioned the room has a cloth door (really not a big deal) I had wonderful sleeps and was welcome to food in the fridge and coffee in the a.m. I got in late at night but Karen was super easy going about that. Great location but not noisy at all.

  • Karen is such a nice person! Though my stay at her house was pretty short, it was great!

  • Karen is such a sweet person! Her apartment is small but that was no issue at all. Sandy (her dog) is one of the nicest dogs I have ever met and I felt completely at ease with him (and that is coming from someone who used to be terrified by dogs!) Location is great, walking distance to most sites for either professionals or tourists in Ottawa. I will definitely consider Karen again for my next stay in Ottawa!

  • Karen is an open and generous host. Even her dog is welcoming! I was greeted with a smile and made to feel at home. A clean and comfortable bed, fresh towels and a chilled glass of Chardonnay were on offer. The next morning I was treated to delicious coffee and eggs for breakfast. She is a lovely woman, I was a lucky guest.

  • Karen (and her friendly pup Sandy!) is a great, bubbly, welcoming host and I really enjoyed my stay with her in the cozy little room she has for airbnb guests. The location is really convenient, within walking distance of transportation, food/bars, and the Parliament area. Karen is a real hands-on host who offers more than just a room to sleep in, and will happily help you with anything you need while you stay!

  • First of all, this house is half-basement one. So if you're a sun-shine lover, I don't recommed it. Second, this room doesn't have a door. There is just one sheet of long textile.. So if you choose a single room because of well- maintained privacy, I don't recommand it.
But this room has a passionate owner. She is a very helpful, experience shaerer and has a good taste about almost everything.
And the location is nice, you need 20 min walk for paliament hill.
And Sandy, a big boy, coca poodle dog is the sweetest part of this house.

  • A great place to stay and a great location. Karen is very friendly and Sandy the dog is adorable. There is a curtain instead of a door for the bedroom but that was part of the charm and I never felt like my privacy was lacking. Would definitely stay again!

  • Karen is a lovely, lively host who has done interesting things in her life. She's generous and curious about others. If you are looking for basic accommodations in the heart of downtown Ottawa on a limited budget, her place is within walking distance of important landmarks (Parliament, National Archives, National Art Gallery, National Art Centre). It was a pleasure to stay with Karen and I thank her for her hospitality.

Jill of all trades!
First and foremost, I'm a people person! I love to experience different places and cultures. Love to cook and enjoy "breaking bread" with others...the best way to get to know people! I come from a fairly large family (for these times) and find it easy to share my space with others. I have lived away (Belize, India, Ecuador) and traveled to quite a few other places too. I think we're lucky to be born in Canada, to be able to travel with ease and to have access to so many entertaining things to do on any given night!! I love radio...community radio or CBC in particular. If you're here, you'll be offered food and probably given suggestions on something (or some band) to see! (Suggestions can be taken or ignored...not a problem!)
