The Space

RockIT CoLabs is a new San Francisco hackerspace for both software and hardware projects. Now we have teamed up with our neighborhood international hostel to provide itinerant hackers with the best of both worlds - access to an amazing community of hackers AND an awesome place to sleep that's filled with social backpackers from all over the world.

Your electronic key will provide 24 hour access to both the hostel and the hackerspace which are located 3 doors away from one another in the heart of San Francisco.

The hackerspace is 3 floors of bohemian tech. Upstairs has adjustable height rocketship tables, great wraparound windows, lounge area, whiteboards, large screen video monitors, office supplies, coffee and snacks. Downstairs is filled with hardware toys including workbenches, test equipment, power supplies, projection screen, 3D printer, vinyl cutter plotter, and a CNC milling machine (coming soon). The ground floor provides another place to work and will soon be an electronics parts store. We have 40mbps with wifi access points on all floors.

The hostel is a highly social and well established. It's a great community of international travelers who want to have fun. We've been here for 22 years! Amenities include free wifi and guest computers, guest kitchen, laundry service, solid steel bunks with built in lockers and clean bathrooms.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • It was my first time staying at a hostel. However, every negative thought I had about it went away as soon as I arrived: people were friendly, the neighbourhood was just blocks away from the financial district and the Union Square... and only one block away from Chinatown!

I also got to meet fantastic people from around the world who were staying and I liked the way that they complied with the house rules. Loved that some nights there was something to do at the hostel.

As per the hacker space, it was right around the corner

  • You can't beat it for the price! I stayed in a room with 5 other people. Bring ear plugs if snoring keeps you up. It's a hostel, so bring a lock to keep your stuff, there's enough room under your bed to keep a suitcase.

There was a $20 cash deposit on arrival that I wasn't aware of. I got it back when I checked out.

Hi Philihp. Our refundable $20 key/ security deposit is stated in the House Rules you received as part of your Airbnb itinerary/confirmation. Sorry to hear you missed that, resulting in confusion. Also, we offer free ear plugs for all of our guests at reception, so feel free to grab some next time! Thanks, the PTW Crew

  • Open and very friendly hostel! Liked to stay there. Even prolonging the stay was no problem. Good conversations and active people.

  • Had a really good time in San Francisco; the place was clean and comfortable (sturdy and comfy beds), and everyone was friendly and helpful.

  • As SF was warming up, the dorm room did as well and we had a really "hot night". A good hostel for communicative and sociable travelers. Staff is very professional and responsive, except there was a misunderstanding at the check-in, so I did not get access to the Coworking Space.

Hi Matthias, sorry again about the mix up with your reservation but we are happy to hear you found it a good hostel anyway!

  • This place was a great stay. As is typical for a hostel you've just got to be comfortable staying in close quarters with other guests. They are all very polite and friendly so no need to worry about the people factor - just remember to bring a lock for storing your personal belongings under your bed!

  • This is my 3rd if not 4th time I come to San Francisco and I stay at this hostel. Very good location and amazing people.

  • It rained furiously during the stay in San Francisco, but I was spared any disappointment thanks to the sunshiny attitude among guests and hosts alike. I met lifelong friends from Liverpool, Zurich, Málaga, Rome, and more. Everyone shared directions, ideas, tips and recommendations. This space is perfect for anyone after a spirited and welcoming social experience with an international flair.

With the help of some really good friends, I have been operating my hostel for 20 years now. I'm passionate about creating community and enjoy creating environments where new friendships can be easily found. I surround myself with people who have this same vision so you might receive a reply form me or one of my friends. We believe people in the world have more in common with each other than they think, and we like working to find the social connections between people. We also operate from the premise that most people are inherently shy someone to help start the conversation and make introductions. The communities you will find under my profile operate with this basic premise in mind. We particularly enjoy people that have something good to offer the world and we like to learn how they are striving to make the world a better place. We always want to know about that special thing that makes you a unique contributing citizen of the world, so don't be surprised if I ask you a few questions about yourself. We also appreciate people who are willing to compromise their habits and routines for the good of the community We think international travel and friendship is vital to our survival on the planet. We think everyone should visit some far off place they have never been at least once a year. While there, people should strive to find the common interests and connections with their fellow human beings. Our golden rule in both houses is "Be Excellent To One Another." By the way, the photo is me in Santorini, Greece. I look forward to meeting you.
