Where you’ll be

Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepéquez, Guatemala

This is my favorite village in all of Guatemala. I first came here in 1986. The first bishop to Guatemala, Francisco Marroquin, must have thought the same because this is where his palace and first monastery were built. There are tours available daily at the back of the church. The church dates around 1500 and many of its altars have been restored. The town is well know for it's crop of níspero (loquat), chocolate making, wood carving and small ceramic pieces. There are delicious restaurants in town. Some of them: Nanú Restaurante y Pizzería, with a varied menu, but pizza and pasta are they specials. Moca & Café Restaurante. And, La Taverna run by Doña Tere and Don Beto.... more casual, but yummy.

I'm a restaurateur in La Antigua Guatemala (Cafe Condesa), an Ayurveda Practitioner (the health science of India), a yoga teacher and Dean of the School of Yoga for Mount Madonna Institute in Watsonville, CA. I love traveling and exploring new places (always with a focus on local food offerings). I love reading --Shadow of the Wind has to be one of my all-time favorites--- and I've belonged to the same book club in Guatemala for about 25 years (all expats). I have two amazing boys... one an artist and musician and the other traveling this year before he begins med school. Cooking is my passion... always has been. I started teaching cooking classes about 40 years ago and just recently started back again.... If you're here when I am (I travel a total of about 5 months of the year to California), I´d love to cook you a meal.

During your stay

The staff is lovely! There are two marvelous young women who cover the days from 7am - 6 pm and a gardner/guard and his wife who cover the evenings. They prepare a delicious breakfast and clean your rooms. If you´d like to have lunch or dinner, you need to tell them at breakfast (additional charge).

We regularly offer morning yoga classes in pranayama (breathing techniques), meditation and asana (the postures). I also give occasional workshops in both yoga and Ayurveda. Ayurveda cooking classes have become a speciality of mine. Maybe you´ll be here during one of them! We also have options of therapist massages. Inquire when booking if you'd like to schedule a massage.
