Ok, so here's the thing; this neighbourhood is not for the faint hearted. If you're looking for a beautiful, tree-lined neighbourhood with cafes and restaurants then forget it. But if you're slightly more adventurous and would like to see a different side to Philly that most tourists would never see then this is the place.
We stayed with Glenn and Xin for 3 nights and found them both to be friendly and helpful. Glenn ensured that we were comfortable upon arrival and basically allowed us to use the house as if it was our own. Breakfast, towels etc. are provided which we found a nice touch.
The house is really beautiful with some quirky features and is somewhat of a relaxing oasis in a seriously lively and gritty area.
The area itself is easily accessible from the city centre by train and the train station is literally across the road from the house which is a saving grace if you don't like the area so much. We had absolutely no trouble in the area and met a couple of friendly neighbours as we were leaving.
The value for money is excellent as hotels in Philly seem quite expensive plus Glenn has excellent localknowledge and can steer you in the right direction to whatever you may need.
We would both be very happy to stay with Glenn and Xin again.
We had a really nice stay with Glenn. The room was clean and comfy, the breakfast was delicious and the host was EXTREMELY helpful! !
The neighbourhood was a bit sketchy but the transportation to downtown was super easy!
Very careful, respecful and interested host. Would recommend to others. As others have pointed out, the neighborhood is not great, but you will likely not spend much time walking around.Enjoy the city and spend a night in this place.

When traveling we always use airbnb. We recently had memorable time at a charming hutong in Beijing China and a high rise in the heart of Hong Kong.
We love great food, and travel. We relax with a picnic in a park with a book, or in bed with a movie on a Sunday evening.
I can't live without my camera, and must have it with me at all times when traveling.
Xin loves to read and will usually have a book on her iPad.
