  • Our five-person group had a wonderful stay at this house. The pictures do not do it justice. It is a beautiful house with a stretch of private beach looking West, so you have a beautiful sunset every evening. We spent three days swimming, reading, playing cards, napping in hammocks and eating.

Definitely be sure to bring enough food, but the cook provided us with a grocery list before we went and that was plenty. The cook, Lena, made lots of delicious Colombian food. We were always full. We did end up having to supplement our water, so calculate out enough of that for everyone. Lena will also make fresh juices every day.

The house is three bedrooms. When we were there, one had a king size bed, one a queen and one two twins, but I think it can vary. There is no hot water, but it is warm enough there that you don't need it. It is a rustic setup but it was perfect for our purposes -- relaxing, getting away from TV and internet.

The boat ride to the house was pretty intense. I don't think it is always like that, but it was very bumpy and wet, so be prepared. Our boat ride back to Cartagena was much calmer and a beautiful last look at Baru.

If you go immediately there may be three puppies at the house. That was an unexpected and wonderful bonus!

I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone, and if I have another chance would certainly return.

  • Wow, so much to tell with this one. The house and beach are exactly as others have described... insanely beautiful and remote. Andres and his wife Lena were very helpful, but they do not speak any English, so I highly recommend that you're able to at least speak intermediate Spanish. Yatan's father was also available over the phone when we had questions.

Lena's cooking is as others have said... unbelievably good. But expect to pay for both your food and for Lena's family. We paid about $25-$30 for a single meal of fish. Way more than we expected.

One tip that I think should definitely be in the house listing, but is not:

-- Travel to/from the house: BEWARE HIDDEN COSTS. We expected to pay $20/person to get to the house. However, we ended up spending $90. This was never explained to us, except that we had to pay for Andres to come to Cartagena to pick us up, but also for him to go with us. The rest of the charges I think came from having luggage, but no one ever told me exactly. Also, when we got there, we were disturbed by a man who claimed to be Lena's son, but wasn't. He wouldn't leave until we bought some of his jewelry. The trip is also quite painful. We sat in a public boat for 3 hours in the heat before it left. We hated it so much that we took motorbikes, a ferry and a taxi back-- which was less arduous than the public boat.

Besides there being a lot of hidden costs we didn't expect to pay, the trip was still quite enjoyable. Don't expect to be in a 5-star hotel with hot water (there is none), but expect to enjoy living in a supremely remote location, disconnected from the world.

  • Amazing stay! The house appears where you wouldn't even dream it would be and offers a very relaxing moment. If you're heading to Cartagena, indulge yourself a few nights there you won't regret it.

  • Yatan is a kind and courteous host that will go out-of-his way to make sure you have a pleasant stay. It is my second stay at this beautiful quiet Caribbean beach house. The house and accommodations are clean and in proper working condition. The caretaker Andres and Lena are wonderful, Lena’s cooking is outstanding Caribbean cuisine at its best. Word to the wise: Make sure you bring plenty of water and cooking supplies, as the nearest shop is a 20-minute walk to the town of Barú. Also, if arriving by sea, I would recommend to get there during the early morning hours as often in the afternoon waters can be choppy making for an uncomfortable ride. Despite any issues you may come cross, no matter, Yatan will make sure your stay is as comfortable as it can possible be arranged. A top class host in an incredible location. I could not recommend him enough.

  • Fantastic house in Baru. It is a very peaceful and serene place. The beach is amazing. Note that you will be disconnected from the world at this place. No internet and TV, which was ideal for our trip. The cook is amazing. You'll need to speak atleast some Spanish to communicate. Definitely rent a small boat to get around and see Rosario Island.

  • I'll come back here it was a great experience. The location is much more private than I expected, completely private beach, never saw another person apart from friends or family of andres and elena who look after the house. elena's cooking is great, better than anything we had in cartagena. they're genuinely sweet people who took great care of us and kept the house immaculate. the upstairs bedroom is awesome but the two downstairs without much of a breeze are hot and have very uncomfortable beds, so that's a downside but overall the place is wonderful.

  • My wife, three-year-old son and stayed at Yatan's beach house for 4 nights. It was a truly amazing house, in an amazing location--we were beyond impressed with every aspect of the trip. It provided us with a vacation where we found ourselves relaxing in the ocean for hours on end, taking naps throughout the day, enjoying the lack of an internet connection and gazing at the stars every night.

The house offers simple, straightforward amenities--it's comfortable, clean and basic. The walls open up and the ocean breeze blows throughout the house. We chose to leave the walls open even at night and with the exception of a night when a thunderstorm blew through. Don't expect a jacuzzi hot tub, infinity pool or digital TV. Do expect soft sand, comfy beds, cool breezes and the sound of the waves.

The water is clear, calm and is shallow enough to walk out at least 30 meters. We found ourselves spending hours every day just floating in the water.

Definitely take advantage of having Andres and Lena if you come. Andres was incredibly accommodating to us. He met us at our hotel in Cartegena early in the morning and helped us get to the market to stock up on food and then to get on the public taxi boat. We were nervous about the transfer to the house with our toddler, but he made the transfer and travel to the house really easy for us. He kept the beach raked and cleared of seaweed and debris every morning and made sure our hammocks were always hung and ready for us to enjoy.

Lena's cooking was among the highlights of our entire trip. Every meal she prepared for us was memorable and absolutely delicious. There was fresh fruit juice with each meal, and we enjoyed fresh local fish, crab, octopus and lobster. She was welcoming, kind and took wonderful care of our family.

The house is definitely isolated, so be prepared. You will definitely want to plan ahead and bring everything you'll need from Cartagena. Don't forget flashlights, bug spray and lots of water. Bring more water than you think you'll need--we ran out of water and needed to walk 30 minutes to Baru to purchase more.

Finally, Yatan and Hans, his father, were incredibly supportive as we asked lots of questions and they coordinated our travel arrangements flawlessly with Andres. Getting to the house requires some planning and logistics, and they made sure that we were comfortable with the details. They are great hosts.

We would come back to Yatan's house again for sure. It was easily one of the most memorable trips that we've taken.

  • Yatan provided wonderful customer service! Lena is an amazing cook so be sure to hire her for your stay. Andres and Lena are very kind. There was a tropical storm the morning we were supposed to leave and Andres guided us through the island to find a spot where the boat could safely pick us up. We were very grateful considering our flight left that afternoon. Thanks to Yatan for all of his help!

  • We were 6 coming to the Beach House ranging in ages from 5 - 42!

It is really an absolute paradise - if you are looking for somewhere that is truly on the beach and is 100% about relaxation then this is the place for you! The photos actually don't do the location justice - in reality its more beautiful! You literally walk out of the house and the beach and sea are right there to be enjoyed.

The property is a classic beach house open to the elements so that it can be enjoyed. The master bedroom has three walls of windows/doors so the outside feels very much part of the room. Its a really romantic room.

The house is not luxurious in an American sense (if you are looking for the latest bathroom fixtures etc) but it is very comfortable and it is absolutely luxurious in the synthesis with which it combines the natural beauty of the location with the house.

Yatan and his father are very efficient at responding to questions and are very gracious. Andres, the house manager and his wife Lena are just delightful people. I would strongly suggest taking advantage of their services. Lena is a wonderful cook and Andres, with his boat, can help you explore the natural beauty. Andres met us in Cartagena to help with the procurement of provisions for the first couple of days.

This place is truly magical - if you are looking for a beach location in a part of the world which is still relatively untouched by things - then this is perfect for you.

Every evening we played a host of games - scrabble, monopoly and so on - no television and internet make this location doubly refreshing!

Staying here was one of the best decisions we have made - it wil be a pleasure to come back again.

The only piece of advice I would give is that there are some logistics to getting to the house so be guided and advised by Yattan as to how to get to the house. Its not on any road system (which is wonderful) and so we hired a boat that took us there and back. It was not cheap but with 6 of use it allowed us not to have to make too many connections and reduced the stress of things. It's worth going through a little complication to get here!

We had the most wonderful time at the house. If you have children (the 5 year old and the 14 year old were in heaven) they will spend 80% of the time in the water.

I very rarely give reviews but in this instance it is a pleasure to tell everyone about what a brilliant place this is!

    Enjoy.

  • If you want to have an unforgettable island escape, this beach house just an hours boat ride from Cartagena is for you.
The house is charming, the beach is even more beautiful than the pictures, and all you hear is the sound of waves lapping against the shore. Go shopping with Andreas in the market in Cartagena before you leave, your meals will be prepared beautifully by Lena, so I would advise that you buy fresh seafood, fruit, a big bag of rice and potatoes, plantains, and beer/rum. That way you will be covered for your meals... any extra items you need can be obtained from Baru but the selection is limited there, particularly with fresh items. Bring a bit of additional money for the housekeeping costs (Lena's cooking, if you have clothes washed etc). And make sure you bring plenty of books to read! Prepare to relax. We were sad to leave!
