Everyone who opens the front door says the same thing..."awww! It's so sweet!". Our little cottage is located on 90 acres, and is just 10 minutes away from Downtown Santa Cruz and Capitola (we are located on a super neat back road that avoids highway 1 traffic).
Unlike most homes in the Santa Cruz mountains, our little cottage is flooded with sunshine all day long. Every single window looks out onto the stunning landscape.
We outfitted the home with brand new furniture in October 2013, and often wish we could stay there ourselves. The clawfoot bathtub is my favorite part of the house.
The cottage shares the 90 acre property with 2 other houses, so even though you'll feel a million miles away from city life, you can still ask your neighbor for a cup of sugar.
90 acres of meadows and forest
There are 2 other homes on the property, so pretty please don't sit on their front porches *laugh*. You are welcome to walk all around the property and explore the hiking trails, but please keep out of the barns (there are 2). They aren't that interesting anyway (currently just used for storage).
*Important note for Guests with dogs*
One of the other houses on our property has a dog. Her name is Gretel and she is the sweetest, most excited to see you dog in the world. The only catch is, if you have a dog with you and go near her house...she feels a bit uncozy about that. Please take care when walking your dog by Gretel's house (the house at the end of the road) by not lingering by her fence too long. If Gretel comes to visit you at the Fairy Tale Cottage, she is totally fine there because she doesn't have a need to 'protect' it. We have had many guests come with dogs and never have a problem at the cottage. We have had an issue in the past, however, if the guest's dog comes into Gretel's space at her own house.
Interaction with Guests
We will leave you alone! In fact, you can't even see our house when you're inside the cottage. If you do want to pop over and say hello, that is absolutely fine. We have 2 young children (under age 3), so we will most likely be playing with bubbles or cleaning up toy trains. Most of the time we are home in the evenings, and enjoy having campfires after the kids go to bed. Feel free to join us if you see us outside!
Every time I get out of the car and take a deep breath, it smells like heaven and my shoulders relax. Country living at it's best.
If you wan to go for a walk, roam around the Great Meadow ( you can see it from the cottage), or walk down past the barn and turn left to take a little stroll through some very old redwoods!
Yay for cars! You can technically ride your bike here (all flat roads from town), but, it is a bit scary because the cars aren't very good at sharing the road.
Other Things to Note
We do have the internet, but because of our mountain location, it isn't the best for streaming movies and such. It works for basic email, and is a bit spotty at times. This is usually a good thing when you're trying to be on vacation! *laugh*
Please don't burn any candles. We are terrified of fire, so please remember this when you are roaming about. Also, the wildlife has forgotten how wild it's suppose to be, so please keep the doors and unscreened windows closed. You'll be in for a surprise if you forget to do this!
We are on a Spring for water, hooray! Yummy! The only catch is that we are in a maaaaajor drought. That means we have to be incredibly careful with water consumption here on the Farm, or...we will have to leave the property because we won't have any water. YIKES. So! What does that mean for you? Pretty please don't fill the bath tub up very high. Also, please limit your showers to an efficient period of time.
I loved staying at the Fairy Tale Cottage! It was so hard to leave. It was cozy and nicely appointed - I had no problem with light cooking (and could have done more) and warming up the cottage with the wood stove (it heated up nicely enough to do yoga very comfortably!). I think I spent hours looking out the windows at the trees and clouds, and more time on the porch bird watching. I also enjoyed some lovely walks in the meadow, and was very comfortable sitting inside when it rained with a good book, some tea, and knitting. This was a perfect little nook for a quiet vacation, off the grid. Thank you!!!
We had a lovely stay at the Fairy Tale Cottage. It is quaint, peaceful and surrounded by a gorgeous variety of trees, open meadows, and deer frolicking about. You will find the cottage pictured in the photos with a beautiful morning and evening light. The wooded cozy bathroom was the perfect retreat after a day of surfing in the frigid Pacific waters. Felt like a steam room! We took some beautiful walks in the redwood groves surrounding the property and loved all the little spots to rest and relax around the cottage. A wonderful place to retreat and listen to the birds, watch the wildlife outside your window and breathe the fresh air.
A sweet cabin, in a quiet, scenic, counry setting - only 10 minutes from downtown Santa Cruz - never met our hosts - need to watch signs carefully when arriving...
My wife and I loved staying in Laecee's cottage. We stayed here for a week and were able to do all of our own cooking. We really enjoyed sitting on the patio for breakfast and dinner. We could do our bird watching right there! Scrub and Steller's jays, acorn woodpeckers, spotted towhees, junco, clay colored robins, red tail and sharp shinned hawks, wild turkeys and more! There was also a fluffy cat on the property who loved to hang out with us on the patio (he even brought his own breakfast one morning, an unlucky vole). We can't wait to come back!
Lacae and Alex were gracious hosts and attentive to our needs. We had a lovely stay and thoroughly enjoyed our time here!
Laecee was super fast at responding to my messages, and she made us feel very welcome and at home in her gorgeous cottage. We had a really relaxing time, just sitting outside reading, or playing cards in the kitchen. It was great to have no internet for 3 days!
It's a short drive to Santa Cruz, so we went there for lunch a few times, but it was always the best feeling to come back home to our little cottage tucked away in the forest.
The cottage was the perfect getaway for two. The neighborhood was beautiful and close to town, but you still felt like you were secluded in the woods. Such a peaceful and serene place to stay, worth every penny. Great for our small dog as well. I would love to stay again!
Happy. Pretty much sums me up. I have the best job in the world (I get to dress up like a mermaid for a living...I'm not kidding), and am married to my prince charming. We have 2 children (under three years old, makes for very little sleep...but a ton of laughing!) and live in paradise. Come stay at our guest house, you'll see what I mean!
