Interaction with Guests
We have a wonderful local property manager (originally from Switzerland, who speaks perfect England) who is at hand to answer every question and make sure you have the time of your life in Costa Rica. And the owner is always available and very responsive by email or phone.
Vista Atenas is a quiet secluded mountain-side community of houses on large private lots. You can see the Pacific Ocean on a clear day in the distance. Huge coffee fields cover the adjacent hillsides.
Unless you wish to stay purely in Atenas, you will need to rent a car (SUV/4WD recommended although not strictly necessary).
We can recommend English-speaking tour guides who do wonderful trips to many of the attractions around Costa Rica, if you would prefer a day or two without having to drive or navigate the roads yourself. (These drivers tend to be much better value than the main tour companies that most tourists use.)
Upon booking (or upon request) I will send you a guide to the house and the neighborhood - but the general rule is that you should treat this home with the same respect as your own home, or better :-)
Douglas's Villa was beatiful and quite big. Enough space for a lot of people and we loved the view from the mountain. Although, we didn't really like the welcoming we had. Comming from another city 6 hours from Atena, we got our gps stolen and 2 stabbed tires so we were late on the check in time and the Lady that was waiting for us was really mad, not understanding and direspectful by accusing us on taking our time for no reason. Also, the wifi wasnt working during the entire stay so we couldnt check our activities online and had to reffer to their activity book. We got to 2 activities we choose and both were closed, one is not existing anymore for 5 years... And lost a full day of vacation. The villa was beautiful but a little too personnalized, seeing all kind of pictures and trophees of Douglas and his son.. We felt like we were living in a strangers house. If you want to do activities around Atena just make sure you know where to go before the trip. If you need help, dont conact Douglas because he always reffer to the lady whos taking care of it, and shes not really more available for you whatsoever. She told us that if we need help on the road because It could be complicated or if we have any trouble not to contact her but to ask a taxi driver....... Which can not be safe at all. Wouldnt go back.
We felt very welcomed in this place. There was a Dutch couple who met us and showed us everything we needed to know which was extremely helpful plus they were always there to help us (even when our car broke down). The house is located in a gated community so we have felt very safe, it is further away from the town so a car is highly recomended. Everything in house was perfect and we have felt like at home during the entire stay. The location is perfect for nearby trips such as La Paz waterfall or Poas volcano etc. I would definitelly very highly recommend this place to everyone.
What a wonderful week. The house is even more beautiful than the pictures depict. Everything was lovely. I would recommend this home to anyone. The view is breathtaking!
I don't know where to begin!! Doug's home was simply amazing! spacious beautiful house and casitas that we felt very welcomed to stay in and treat it and maintain it even better than our home! The views are magnificent overlooking the central valley from a high hilltop and everything even looks better in reality than the pictures! We had a very relaxing stay and enjoyed the property and the pool a lot in addition to visiting many interesting sites in Costa Rica as the villa is almost an hour away from major attractions such as volcanoes, beach, (email hidden)c. Doug's property managers took good care of us and were very attentive when we needed them. I highly recommend staying a Doug's home for your CR adventure. You won't regret it :)
Douglas' home is absolutely stunning. Sitting atop a tall hill overlooking a gorgeous valley, we could not have asked for a more peaceful, relaxing or beautiful place to spend our short stay in Costa Rica. The weather was exactly as advertised-- warm enough in the day to swim in the pool, but cool enough at night to sleep with the windows wide open and enjoy the fresh breeze.
Leticia, the house manager based in Costa Rica, was very sweet and accommodating, adjusting her schedule to welcome my co-traveler a few hours earlier than I initially told her I would be arriving. If you are not renting a car, I highly recommend Walter, the driver who Leticia recommended. He is very knowledgeable about the town (Atenas), giving us fantastic recommendations for restaurants and day trips.
All in all, I would highly recommend Costa Rica, Atenas and Douglas' home for your stay in Costa Rica.
An immediate home away from home. My family had a reunion at Douglas' place. We all enjoyed the time immensely, and this home provided the family atmosphere to make the reunion comfortable and memorable. Booking it through AirBnB, I can say the photographs do not do it justice: the sparking night sky contrasted by the sweeping morning views are very refreshing. The pool is a delight. My sister went on training runs in the neighborhood and enjoyed the work out. My mother did her morning stretches in the look out space on a walkway up on the top view of the property with a great mountain scape. I booked this place especially for my grandmother, my son's great grandmother, because I believed it would give her a quiet place to relax and feel healthy and at home. It was just that for her. She enjoyed sitting outside and listening to the birds welcome the day. She was comfortable and tranquil. My youngest sister had law work to do simultaneously with her mini-vacation, and I can testify that the Internet is the fastest I've had in Costa Rica. She could relax by the pool, be close to family, and return to work a few hours a day with ease. Oh and yes, did I mention, the home has beautiful views. The house has two bedrooms, with two ensuite cabanas steps away. One with a nice deck. There is a new barbecue and the house is well appointed for entertaining. Oh, reminds me: The hammock is perfect! This house has all the amenities to make a stay very easy: From hot water throughout, well equipped kitchen, to a complete washer and dryer. It's quiet, safe, and Douglas and his team work hard and were on call to have made our stay caring and special. We are thankful!
The pictures don’t tell the full story - the views are absolutely spectacular, the house is beautiful, and the climate is perfect. We really didn’t want to leave at the end of our trip!
Some useful info - the main house is actually a two-bedroom with a large main living area. The other two bedrooms are literally a few steps away in the separate “casitas” (really beautiful brand new in-law units). So the house isn’t too big for just one or two couples, but it’s also kinda great for a bigger family/group where people want a nice communal space to cook, eat or just hang out together, and then to have their own separate spaces too.
Also, Laetitia (Douglas’ local contact who speaks perfect English) was super helpful and welcoming when we first arrived and made everything very easy for us. We didn't have to worry about anything.
And the house is in a great central location, less than half an hour from the airport, and close enough to explore most of the things you’ll want to see in Costa Rica. This really is the perfect base for your trip to this amazing country!
