Guest Access

The seasonal pool and year-round hot tub are are a short walk away. Guests can access the pool and hot tub by following the road through the secluded natural woodland. The pool area is surrounded by a high tensile fence with latching and chained gates. In the interest of safety we ask that the gates remained closed and latched at all times. There is no lifeguard on duty so swimming and tubbing is at your own risk. Please no diving or glass in the enclosure.

DAWN TREADER guests check in at our home, the Cair Paravel Farmhouse, and are escorted to the secluded location. Your Cair Paravel Farm host will help you get settled and show you the operating systems in the Dawn Treader. Guests are always welcome to text, call, or come by the Farmhouse but please remember we are a working farm and at times will be unable to respond immediately...text/call is best.

The Neighborhood

There are many area attractions and activities- hiking in the Shenandoah National Park, visiting Monticello or Montpelier, following the Monticello Wine Trail or the Brew Ridge Trail, and checking out the work of Virginia Artisans in the local shop: Noon Whistle Pottery. We are close to both Charlottesville and Harrisonburg. For other activities and attractions check out our guidebook.

If you are considering hiking take a look at Hiking Upward. The site has great maps and descriptions of the trails as wells as a great rating system.

Getting around

The nearest airport is the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport. Rental cars are available at the airport. To reach the farm is an easy half hour drive. A rural transportation service, the Greene County Transit, operates Monday through Saturday.

Other Things to Note

Cair Paravel is a sustainable farm featuring organic gardening, dairy goats, poultry, sheep, alpacas, turkeys and pigs. We pasture raise our animals supplementing their diet with local non-gmo feed and the animals are processed by a USDA inspected abattoir. Ask about the various farm products we may have available. We have chicken, sausage, pork, lamb, and eggs. Martha bakes fresh bread for the family as well as produces goat milk products- soaps and lotions.

If you do not want to cook consider arranging for a special dinner. Our Farmstead kitchen is licensed and inspected by the Virginia Department of Health and we are a licensed Bed and Breakfast. Whitt is a retired chef who is able to offer either our Farmhouse meal or a special order dinner. Just send us a message through AirBnB to make arrangements for the dinners at least 48 hours in advance of your visit.

  • My children (ages 4 and 6) and I stayed in the airstream for one night in July. It was a wonderful stop on a 36 hour road trip. The kids loved the airstream! It is a little rustic (think "clamping"); but comfortable, clean, and quiet. The airstream has a nice large deck which provided us with room to spread out a bit. We spent a little time at the pool - which is very nice and a short walk from the airstream, but also seems to be a popular hang out for bees.

Whitt and Martha were wonderful hosts. They are very friendly and welcoming! Whitt gave us a tour of the farm the morning of our departure. The kids loved meeting the goats, chickens, alpaca, and numerous other animals on the farm.

We will definitely stay here again!

  • Whitt and Martha were great hosts who went out of their way to make us comfortable and help us make the most of our stay in the area. We got a farm tour, bought some of their amazing food and learned a few recipes and cooking tips. The airstream was clean and just as pictured and the porch area was great for grilling and relaxing. Really fun, would definitely return!

  • Awesome stay in the Airstream! Might have been a rainy day, but the view was still lovely. My 6 year old asked if we could stay for 40 days which is extra amazing, considering no Internet!

Hope to return for a not rainy visit.

  • Whitt and Martha's hard work is evident in the extraordinary property they've cultivated; the working, sustainable farm and the clean and cozy Airstream aren't to be missed. My husband and I went for walks along the perimeter of the farm, swam in the pool (beach towels provided!), and made meals in the well-stocked kitchen over the course of our two-night stay. Whitt and Martha made us feel welcome without feeling at all intrusive. Recommend without reservation.

  • This place is a real gem - and so are the hosts. The airstream has everything you need and is really nicely furnished. Among other things, I really appreciated the good quality cookware (a result of having an ex-executive chef as a host, perhaps?) The hosts were very kind and accommodating and made everything smooth and enjoyable! They even gave us freshly baked cookies when we arrived. We'll definitely keep it in mind for future ventures.

  • We were thrilled with our stay at the airstream. Whitt and his wife were fabulous hosts. The trailer was clean and had plenty of room. We loved hanging out on the deck and enjoying the space. It was a little bit of Heaven.

  • Our visit two-night stay was relaxing and peaceful. The RV is small, but for two people, works nicely. With no wifi, my wife and I got a break from the outside world. The hot tub is nice. The pool was OK, but cold and had a lot of bees nearby. The final couple miles of road to the RV is made of dirt, narrow and somewhat steep. Something to keep in mind when deciding on transportation. Overall, it was a wonderful experience.

  • Had a wonderful weekend with my daughters at the Airstream. Even though we had quite a bit of rain, the Airstream was cozy and fun; we fell asleep to the sound of raindrops on the roof. Whitt and Martha wwere excellent hosts and dinner was outstanding. Favorite part was touring the farm and meeting the pyrenees moutnain dogs and baby chicks. So fun!

  • Two of my sisters and I stayed at the Airstream and we literally could not have had a better time! The beds were comfy! The swimming pool and hot tub were awesome! It was perfect. We stayed one night before we hiked and explored Shenandoah National Park the next day! Would absolutely stay here again anytime!

  • The drive up the mountain was daunting at times but we were so pleased when we arrived! The airstream has its own secluded area in the woods so that you really feel like you're in the woods by yourself. However, the pool and hot tub and Whitt's house are all a short walk away. The deck is a pleasure with two reclining chairs, a lovely elevated fire stand and a gas grill. The kitchen is fully equipped with spices and cookware. There's a fan as well as AC. I had spotty service with Verizon while my girlfriend had almost no service with AT&T.

Whitt gave us a plate with freshly baked cookies and strawberries, which was delicious. They also sell fresh food from the farm -- the goat cheese and chicken were especially good.

You can hike around the property and there's another trail just up the mountain. I hiked around the property and it was beautiful. There is also a nice farm with goats and chickens. I went to see the chickens and all the goats went right up to me because they thought I had a treat for them! It was delightful. Overall, if you're looking for an adorable mountain getaway, this is the place for you!

Retired Executive Chef turned Farmer
I am a retired executive Chef who has worked in all types of hospitality environments for 35 years. Managing a small country Inn and restaurant for 12 of those years has given me ample experience to create and manage our unique Yurt B&B as well as our other lodgings. My family and I are in process of creating a self supporting and sustainable farm homestead and lodgings and we offer welcome to one and all. In addition to our enterprises we are grateful stewards of 60 acres of spectacular mountain land, most of which is as undisturbed as possible with an easily accessible nature trail winding throughout the property. As a working farm we also have a multitude of gentle critters and an abundance of home grown foods. Having grown up in Hawaii I know well about relaxing and enjoying life and all it has to offer, and believe we have created a place where everyone can share in the same. Join us!
