The Space

Rent our one bedroom cabin situated in the quaint fishing town of Cabuya on the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica.

What's Cabuya like?
Cabuya is a quiet town in Costa Rica, popular with locals and tourists alike and is just 7km from the better known "party towns" of Montezuma and Santa Teresa, offering you the best of both worlds. There is a bus service that runs between Montezuma and Cabuya several times during the day. Cabuya is best known for great fishing, its cemetery island, turquoise waters, snorkeling and as the home of the first nature reserve in Costa Rica, Cabo Blanco Reserve. The national park is less than 2km from the cabin. The beach is about a ten minute walk from the cabin (see photos) and is great for snorkeling as there is a reef along the coast. The beach texture is small pebbles but is very peaceful and easy to find a stretch all to yourself. Sandy beaches are just 4km away, a quick bike ride or trip on the bus.

There are several restaurants to enjoy in Cabuya that tend to focus on seafood with a mixture of typical dishes and American. There is also a bar in town.

What's the cabin like?
The cabin is made of locally sourced teak and bamboo and is the perfect location for one or two people. There is one queen bed and we can also add a double mattress on the floor if you have children/more people. The bedroom is located upstairs and opens on to a balcony, where you can relax in your choice of two hammocks. The downstairs area is open, minimizing the barrier between outdoor and indoor living, one of the wonderful benefits of living in a tropical climate. You can sit and sip your coffee in the morning while watching the monkeys, hummingbirds and iguanas do their thing.

The bathroom and kitchen are downstairs, along with a kitchen table and another hammock. The cabin comes complete with fresh linen, towels and all utensils necessary for cooking. There is a standing fan in the bedroom. Also has wi-fi.

Will I like the cabin?
Our cabin is perfect for someone who loves the outdoors, likes a more immersive travel experience and wants to experience the real Costa Rica. It's rustic but cute.

What's the property like?
The cabin is one of two cabins located on 3/4 acre of a beautiful tropical garden (we live in the other), but the garden and tropical plants add to the privacy of each cabin. We love our garden and spend a lot of time growing new plants for you to enjoy. You can make pizza or roast food in the cabin's cob oven.

What's there to do?
If you like the ocean, wildlife, nature, and want to get away from it all, you will love Cabuya. The best uncrowded surf beaches on the eastern side of the Cabo Blanco peninsula are located nearby. The turquoise waters around Cabuya Island offer some of the best fishing and snorkeling spots on the Nicoya Peninsula. As we said, historically it's been a fishing village so there's plenty of fresh fish to eat and catch here. It's not unusual for a local to stop by and offer you some fresh fish. We have bikes, surfboards and snorkeling gear for you to rent and also offer guided tours. Cabo Blanco Reserve is on your door step and is a great place to spend a day hiking and enjoying the wildlife.

We also run a tour company (Solo Bueno Tours) and provide guided tours of the area - fishing, snorkeling, kayaking, horse riding - so there's plenty of fun activities for you to do. We can also arrange for you to have private Spanish classes with a great (and fun) teacher who speaks perfect English and currently teaches at a well known language school in Montezuma. Let us know if you have any questions about the area or the cabin and we'll be happy to answer them. We hope you decide to stay in our cabin :)

  • We visited Cabuya after staying a few days in Montezuma, a busier, touristier surf village (which we totally loved, so don't get us wrong.) Cabuya is only 7km away, so we expected it to be much of the same. However, it's a much more quiet, authentic Tico experience.

Jeffrey was raised in Cabuya, so he knows the town well. He was always very helpful in suggesting things to do. He even took us on one of his tours to the cemetery island where he told us a bit of history, we snorkeled and he speared us a fish for dinner! We had a really great time hanging out with him.

As far as the cabin, it is definitely rustic, so be prepared for that. But we loved it. We'd typically get up and go for a walk to find breakfast in the morning, wander around a bit and then head back to spend the late afternoon lounging in the hammocks and reading. It was the most relaxing part of our trip.

  • The family is very kind and graciously and shares their abundant land with you while you stay in their cabin on stilts. Be causcious if you have any knee stiffness as their is no railing on the steps up to your balcony. It was written that they had a vegetable garden implying you could even pick from and eat, but that was far from the truth. Perhaps that will be changed by the time you read this. If you are over 200 lbs I would be causious about the floor inside as it is bowed and appears to be tenuously supported. I think for young surfers it would be appropriate. Just don't be jumping around on the floor. It could be a fun place for the right person(s).

  • The description for this place is accurate... It is "rustic", and located deep in the village of Cabuya. I wouldn't give it a bad review, just be sure that you want a truly "outback" experience when you stay here.

Oh, and seriously bring the bug spray. This is the Cabo Blanca area, not Tara's or Jeffery's fault.

  • The ad is more than very accurate. To live a real Costa Rican experience and spend time with the locals, Cabuya cannot be missed. Tara and Jeffry are wonderful hosts. The roosters will wake you up so you do not miss out on your day. The hammocks are so wonderful as you relax and listen to the best of nature. Spend time at this tropical cabin to relax and really get away from it all. Walk to the beach, walk to the local restaurants, and the local food store. Tara and Jeffry provide you with a welcome packet that gives great tips and gets you on your way. Stick with the Costa Ricon dishes as they are great. Long and short, to experience a wonderful tropical retreat, stay at Tara and Jeffry's cabin. It indeed is a tropical paradise.

  • Our stay at the cabin was absolutely great. We felt at home and very welcome thanks to Jeffry and his cousin Carlos. Jeffry was always available to help us whether it was for booking a quad or organizing a surf lesson in Montezuma. Tara was also really helpfull before we arrived, answering to all my questions and sending a taxi at the airport to pick us up. If you travel to meet new people, make friends and experience local life this is for sure the place for you. Cabuya village is calm and everyone there is nice and helpfull. However, you must like camping to appreciate your stay at the cabin since, except for the bedroom, you will be living outside. That being said, my boyfriend and I highly recommand this tropical cabin.

  • Our time in Cabuya was just great! Thanks to the "non-so-touristic"-village and the stay in Tara's & Jeffry's Cabina we could start our Costa-Rica-Adventure in a very authentic way... Everything felt so easy going, the neigbourhood just friendly and secure. We enjoyed the simlicity of life, the green area around, the chance to be close to a lot of animals..., the sound of the jungle, the nearby national park with it's wild coast and the isla Cabuya just opposite the beachside of Cabuya, which we explored together with Jeffry. Unfortunately Tara couldn't be there at this time of our stay, but Jeffry is also a good host and Tara helped with little things via Mail.
All in all we recommend this place to everyone who want's to explore Costa Rica and it's natural way of being...

  • The cabin is a really sweet place to chill! The deck with the hamac is just perfect for that.

Even if there is no sandy beach in Cabuya, you can easily take the bus to Montezuma, it is cheap (about 1$).
Cabo blanco park is really closed and worth a hike.

We enjoyed the nice little quiet town of Cabuya, except for the barking dogs at night. Those dogs cost us great hours of sleep, it is unfortunate.
Jeffry was really nice and we felt secure at that place.

  • Let me start off by stating that Jeff is a first class host. He is very knowledgable of the area and is very keen to share his experiences and stories with his guests.
This place is a step above a hostel but a couple steps below a decent hotel.
    Here is what I liked:
    -Short walk to beach
    -Close proximity to National Park
-Access to lots of tours. Jeff is happy to arrange pretty much anything you can imagine
    -Dependable WIFI and power
-Right next to a really quaint lovely restaurant El Rancho. Amazing cerviche for around $6 bucks
    - About 10 minute walk to The Coyote Restaurant. A little pricier but still reasonable. The owner Jenny and her family are lovely. I highly recommend you eat there at least once.
-Two hammocks is a nice feature. Spent lots of time in both
-Jeff was kind enough to help me everyday with my Spanish. He speaks both English and Spanish fluently and was really keen to help me out.
    What I didn't like:
    -Water was really cold
-Coyotes, dogs, chickens and passing traffic will keep you up at night if you are a light sleeper
-Safe wasn't working in my room
-Fan wasn't installed in my room and it could be quite hot at night
-Was very close to a main road to there wasn't as much privacy as I would of hoped for
Overall I enjoyed the stay and though it was good value.

  • Staying in Jeffry's cabin was the highlight of mine and my boyfriend's Costa Rican vacation. Jeffry owns a tour company (Solo Bueno) and took us out spearfishing and snorkeling where we had an incredible time. The cabin was clean, rustic, and charming with a surprisingly small number of the tropical bugs we were expecting. From Jeffry's hospitality to the town of Cabuya to the living arrangements, everything was perfect. If we ever make our way back to this part of the country, we'll definitely stay here. We came knowing no one in Costa Rica and left with a lifelong friend in Jeffry. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

  • Super séjour, la cabina est totalement dépaysante, on se sent vraiment au coeur du costa rica. Jeffry est terrible pour les conseils et la disponibilité : il est surement le meilleur pécheur en eaux troubles de la péninsule de Nicoya!!! Pura Vida, merci encore...
