Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • My husband and I stayed here for only one night, right before leaving Costa Rica to return home from our honeymoon. The location was very convenient to the airport - the taxi cost about 6 USD. The room was clean but nothing fancy, at a very reasonable price. The hosts were very helpful in giving us directions and also calling a taxi for us. No complaints whatsoever.

  • Isabel, the manager, and Pilo, the night manager, were both very friendly and helpful. Silvia cooks a good breakfast! Make sure to stop by Isabel's restaurant, Jalapeños, only a few blocks away: great food and service. Wifi worked great in common areas and it's located in a quiet neighborhood.

  • I really enjoyed my stay at Vida Tropical! Isabel and Vilmar were very helpful and super friendly. Isabel helped me pick the best tours and gave me guidance on how to get around town. FYI for everyone: the "San Jose" airport is actually in Alajuela (the city where Vida Tropical is). There is a bus in town from Alajuela that goes to San Jose..costs USD$1 and takes about 40 min. If you are adventurous, when you arrive at the airport you can actually take the bus instead of a cab (should be no more than USD$6) to Vida Tropical. The room I stayed in (Bamboo) was really convenient. I had a TV w/ cable, wifi, and my own shower. The breakfast (tipico Gallo de Pinto) was delicious! If you are looking for somewhere to stay that feels very homey, this is a great spot. The only downside I can say is that there was a similar hostel in alajuela that had similar amenities, a great view of the city at the rooftop bar, better location to get to the bus, free shuttle to the airport, and it was significantly cheaper (USD$24 bucks for a double).
Overall, my feedback that is if you are looking for a homey feel in a place to stay that is safe and has really good people to give you guidance, this is the way to go. Pura Vida!!!

  • Good place to start with, getting your bearings to figure out your trip. Isabella was of great help!!! Helping in planning out tours, cabs and buses. We were treated our first day tagging along with Auntie Isabella and Nico to the local refuge zoo and sharing a true Costa Rican lunch. What great tour guildes they were! Not being a breakfast eater, the fruit was delicious. Tico the rabbit is friendly and started my mornings off with a smile
flopping after me for more rubs. FYI Nico likes popcorn, bring some kernels with you to make fast friends. Totally would come here next trip. The Roberts from Oregon.

  • This is a very friendly and easy place to stay. It was clean and had a very large bathroom! I would return here again, and will tell my family that they should stay here. The owners were very helpful with planning a touring visit on my only day that i had to see the 'sights'.

Innkeeper of sorts
I was born in Cuba, raised in Florida, moved to Costa Rica in 1997, love to read, travel, grow stuff to cook it and eat it, surf the Net, opened Vida Tropical in 1999, have great people helping: Isabel, my manager for 6 years, is from Colombia, married to Norman, New Yorker from Colombian parents, he owns Jalapeño Central Tex Mex Restaurant in Alajuela. Their son is Nico, born in Costa Rica. Sylvia, from Costa Rica, has been our housekeeper and cook for 10 years. Adilio (Pilo) is also Costa Rican and is there covering late arrivals (after 8) and early departures (from 3 to 7 AM), I'm there only part of the time, the rest I spend now in my new place in Playa Carrillo. We all enjoy meeting the great variety of guests from all over the world. We have one of the world's best breakfasts at both places, with 4 or 5 types of fresh fruit, orange juice, high altitude coffee and assorted teas, white and brown sugar and milk, corn flakes and granola, several kinds of bread for toast, several kinds of homemade jams and jellies, eggs any style, poached, sunny side up, over easy, scrambled, omelettes, frittatas, your choice of plain or with smoked cheese, garlic, onions, green pepper, tomatoes, smoked ham or country sausage, French toast and pancakes with or without fruit or chocolate chips, honey, syrup and Nutella. Include also if you wish a serving of our own version of Gallo Pinto, a mix of rice and beans seasoned with diced veggies and our secret mix of spices, Balsamic vinegar and Lizano sauce, the Costa Rican version of Worcestershire sauce, mighty tasty stuff.
