Alaskan log home near Fairbanks, in private, quiet, sunny location, great view, and close to the University and town. Experience real Alaska in comfort! Ideally located on the outskirts of town. Accommodates up to six people. The house has two bedrooms with very comfy queen beds and a loft with a queen futon.
Travelers often refer to the log home as a 'cabin', probably because of the log construction, but the place is a log house with full amenities-- running water, full shower, two bathrooms, washer and dryer, beautifully equipped kitchen, standard oil furnace heat (but also has a high efficiency, clean burning wood stove), etc.
Located in a quiet residential setting on the outskirts of College, Alaska. Twelve minute drive to the University, 15 minutes from the airport, and 20 minute drive to downtown. Enjoy the Aurora Borealis from the deck or hot tub, explore your creativity in the ceramics studio, check out the wood-fired pizza and bread oven, go sled dog mushing, or drive to the Arctic Circle, Brooks Range, Arctic Coastal Plain, Alaska Range, or the internationally renowned Denali National Park or Chena Natural Hot Springs. See the Trans-Alaska pipeline or visit the amazing Fairbanks Icepark in winter. Lots to do within easy reach! Free high-speed wireless internet, nice office work space with a view of the Alaska Range, fresh eggs daily from the chicken coop (Oct 2014 chicken update-- chickens have moved on to their next existence, and the chicken coup will be filled with new baby chicks in spring 2015, but we still get fresh eggs from the neighbor's chickens in the meantime!!), espresso maker, and fresh garden goodies and berries (when in season). Snowshoeing, hiking and mountain biking trails out the front door, and ski trails nearby! Watch a movie on the big screen, and enjoy the comfort and ambiance of the wood stove. Peaceful, private, relaxing setting. Makes a great getaway, or home away from home!
My interaction with guests varies widely, depending upon guest preferences and needs. I enjoy meeting guests, and hearing their travel stories and experiences. I take extra care to be sure my guests have what they need, and that they have an excellent Alaskan experience.
The neighborhood is quiet, nestled in the forest, and even though my place is located close to town it offers excellent privacy. Hiking trails are right out the front door.
Having a car is helpful for getting around, if you want to see the area. My place is an easy 15-min drive from the airport.
No more than six people. Dogs on approval. No cats or other pets please. Absolutely NO smoking or drugs. I aim to host responsible, respectful, considerate guests that seek a true Alaskan travel experience. Instead of requiring expensive security deposits or charging higher cleaning costs, I simply ask that guests leave the house clean and orderly, as it was when they arrived, including washing the linens (which helps me defray some of the costs of house cleaning, to pass those savings on to guests). Price includes all taxes.
Staying at Mark's cabin was an amazing experience. We were extremely lucky and saw the Northern Lights over head all 5 nights we were there. The house was like home away from home. It had all the modern amenities plus a fully stocked kitchen. Much of the house was homemade from the kitchen counter to the outdoor hot tub. The location of the house was very convenient. It's about 20 minutes from the airport and Fred Meyer, 10 minutes from Moose Mountain for skiing/snowboarding and 25 minutes from Ester Dome, an excellent place for aurora viewing. Also, as the house was up in the hills, the area was a good 10-20 degrees warmer than downtown area. Mark was also a very generous host, offering us his own moose meat to try and firing up his clay oven to help us make pizzas. He also gave us many tips and suggestions for activities. If you're visiting Fairbanks, Mark's house is the go-to place. You'll be surrounded with great views and feel like you're home.
We had an amazing time here! Mark is such a lovely, generous and warm person he made us feel right at home. Offering us his own caught halibut and moose for dinner! We even got invited to make pizza in the clay oven with his friends, who were equally as nice. The house is a dream. Literally. My husband would have been happy if I left him there! It's really light and cosy. The fire is wonderful. Mark makes pottery so the cupboards are full of attractive mugs, plates and bowls. The views are super and the stars were gorgeous-you can see them from your bed! There's also the hot tub! What better way to start the day with a soak in the tub, watching the sunrise and listening to the birds. Perfect.
All these things made our experience very unique. Mark and his house are an inspiration.
Also, the house has great access to everything. The surrounding roads are really pretty, especially with all the snow.
We're already talking about coming back in the summer....
Wow what can we say everything was great about our stay! The property is beautiful with stunning views, the interior is warm and comfortable. Just incredible!
Great cabin! Has everything we need! The wood stove kept us warm and was nice to come back to a warm cabin. Full kitchen to cook anything you want, nice gas stove. Got a bunch of groceries at Fred Meyer in town and enjoyed waking up to have tea and breakfast with an amazing view! The cabin is on a hill overlooking the valley, incredibly beautiful. We came in January to see the northern lights which you can apparently see from the cabin. The cloudy conditions kept the lights away but we stayed up every night till 2 am just in case. The bed in the front room is even on stilts so you can look at the sky from the bed!
Overall would stay here again, incredible host, could not ask for more! Thank you!
Everything is great at the place and Mark is a very nice person. The house is a good place to stay for vacation because it's close to downtown Fairbanks but just far enough to be dark and ideal for watching aurora. We had everything we need in the house, and the wood stove, projector, hot tub, pizza stove and ceramic studio were perfect add-ons. We were more than satisfied. Will definitely stay here again!
Mark's place is great. It is very comfortable and located in a great location. Mark is very friendly and helpful with local recommendations. Highly recommended.
Mark and his place are great. The house is a wonderful, secluded spot that is very comfortable. The kitchen is well-stocked for cooking, thebbed is comfy, and the surroundings are fantastic. Mark is an excellent host. He is friendly, accommodating, knowledgeable and helpful. I definitely recommend his place for a quiet base for an Alaskan trip.
I am a freshwater ecologist with the University of Alaska, in Fairbanks. When not teaching or doing ecological research I enjoy adventure travel, fishing, biking, skiing, pottery, boat building, yoga, varied and healthy cuisine, cooking, and gardening. I live an active life, free of drugs and tobacco. (I do enjoy proper amounts of good wine, beer, and occasionally whiskey!)
