The farmhouse Il Focolare is situated inside the Natural Reserve of the low-Merse.
This Reserve was founded in 1996 in order to preserve a rare and uncontaminated ecosystem. It spreads up in a wide area that joins the stream Merse’s and the stream Farma’s valleys, half way between the “Metallifere” hills and the Maremma’s woods.
The rich, unspoilt natural habitat includes a large number of animals like the otter or the coyput, as well as a great variety of arboreous sorts like the mountain beech which have become very rare in other areas of Italy.
In the stream Merse’s plain it is possible to sight the kingfisher and different sorts of rare anphibians, like the emeraldine toad. It is also possible to watch the flight of birds of prey such as the brown kite, the buzzard, the kestrel and, if watchers are lucky, the big royal kite, whose wing span can reach two meters and whose peculiar tail is bifurcated.
The favorable position of this farmhouse allows for a combination of countryside tranquillity as well as providing various possibilities for excursions to places of cultural relevance.
Florence, with its inestimable historical and artistic wealth.
San Gimignano, the town of the “Vernaccia” wine and the beautiful towers.
Siena, a city still preserving its medieval look, whose ancient traditions come to life again every year with unchanged passion through the Palio, a fast and furious bareback horse race.
Pienza, a fine example of Renaissance architecture in the heart of the gorgeous Val d’Orcia.
The hilltop town of Montalcino, whose impressive 13th century fortress overlooks the surrounding countryside covered with olive groves and vineyards of the famous “Brunello” wine.
The St. Antimo abbey by Montalcino, one of the most beautiful romanesque churches in existence.
The imposing St. Galgano abbey and the Montesiepi Hermitage, that hosts the famous “sword on the rock”. This Cistercian complex is certainly one of the most charming spots in Tuscany.
The Benidictine abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, situated in the magnificent setting of the Sienese “Crete”, is a place in which art and faith come together as in few other places in the world.
Montepulciano is well known for its imposing Renaissance buildings, as well as for its churches’ fine architecture.
Volterra is a jewel of Etruscan art; its magnificent buildings hold three thousand years of history. This town also boasts a unique artistic handicraft, the alabaster.
Massa Marittima is one of the finest medieval towns of the Grosseto province. The historical centre includes a beautiful 13th century cathedral and plenty of lovely narrow lanes with handicraft shops.
A lot of other charming spots, not listed in guide book itineraries, include the many medieval little villages perched on hilltops, in which time seems to stand to allow focusing on the land’s and the people’ history, culture and traditions.
We will be glad to provide our guests with some useful information about the tourist spots they intend to visit. We wish you a very nice stay in Tuscany!

About the Host, Federigo
