The Space

Poised on a quiet road that ends at the beach and is shared by the local language school and other lodging units, this unique and spacious apartment (75m2) with its vaulted ceiling is shaded by mango, papaya, plantain, and cashew tres. Our fully furnished apartment has two bedrooms, one bath, and an open-plan living room and kitchen with a marble-tiled breakfast bar, cable TV and WiFi included.
The spacious master bedroom has a double bed while the second has two single beds sleeping a total of four comfortably, perfect for a family, two couples or traveling friends. Both rooms have two bedside tables, lamps, closets and ceiling fans. Our unique furniture is handmade by local woodworkers using recycled tropical woods.
The kitchen has a convection toaster-oven, Italian stovetop, blender, hot water heater, and seating for 5 at the breakfast bar.
In the interest of full disclosure, as with any rental in the heart of Sámara, the bar-restaurants can sometimes be noisy at night (mostly on Saturdays), as can the early morning roosters, dogs and howler monkeys. To that end we have two loud floor fans that work great for drowning out outside noise.

Guest Access

For the use of our guests, we have a longboard, and two boogie boards. Crib and other children´s equipment is also available on prior request (we have two kids, aged 3.5 and 11).
Finally, guests are welcome to enjoy the beachfront facilities of the language school (diagonal to the apartment) that we co-own; are offered a 25% discount on our group Spanish clases and may sign up for yoga, Latin dance, zumba and cooking clases at local rates. You are also welcome to consult with our staff/ resources for reservations and/or advice on local activities and trips around the country.

Interaction with Guests

We are more than happy to help guests answer any questions and give suggestions on things to do in the área. As guests use an entrance separate from ours, they only have to see us if they want to! We recommend using the airbnb site to communicate, as messages come up instantly for us on our mobile airbnb app.

The Neighborhood

I love that we are so close to the beach, you don't even need to put your flipflops on, and that there is so much nature and wildlife around us. Also, being right near the language school is a plus, as guests can use the facilities and take part in activities like yoga and dance, and feel like they are part of a community if they want to. Also, absolutely everything is within very short walking distance (no more than a few blocks)!

Getting around

There are public buses in Sámara, but most people walk or bike everywhere. The shops are a block down the beach, the bank is a block and a half away, and restaurants are all within one to four blocks.

Other Things to Note

We are a family with two kids and we love to host other families, travelers, anyone wanting something other than the hotel experience! Kids are welcome to use our swingset and trampoline anytime, and we can also help you arrange childcare or bilingual kínder and school options, for those staying for a longer time.
If you want to stay less than 5 nights and there is a space in the calendar, just write to us.. we will try and be flexible.

  • Laura's place was wonderful, our boys were happy to be literally 1 minute walking distance from the beach. Everything you need within walking distance. The house is very spacious and comfortable and airy. We loved waking up in the morning to the sound of birds and howler monkeys. It was truly a wonderful experience. Love the town of Samara. Thanks Laura

  • This house was great for my family. The beach is at the end of the road and the downtown is right around the corner. The house was clean and exactly what you see in the pictures. The were screens on all of the windows and the fans helped with the heat. We did hear the club down the road on the weekend, but the fans also helped drown out the noise.

  • This was our first experience with airbnb and also our first trip to Costa Rica and will definitely not be our last of either. Laura provided excellent communication from my first contact - often responding in just seconds. That was so easy and refreshing to have a host to interact with and help answer questions. We had some delay with our flight and ended up arriving very late at night, but Laura was available when we called and Tyrone even carried our bags for us in what was practically the middle of the night. Laura and her family have a wonderful place and the apartment was just as described. Light and airy and comfortable and suited our needs just fine. I am glad that we went this route instead of a hotel or resort, it was a very comfortable place for our family. The location was just as described - just a very short walk down to the beach and also to town. We loved our experience here and would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting a comfortable and pleasant stay in Samara.

  • Our stay in Samara was amazing! We didn't get to see Laura but Tyrone was extremely helpful and very nice. The apartment was just as pictures and perfect for our week there. It was just a short walk to the beach, restaurants, bars and the market. It was just right for our first trip to Costa Rica. Definitely looking forward to going again!

  • Great place. Short walk (100mts) to beach and close to everything in town.
Extremely helpful on setting up tours and other activities.
Nicely furnished with items made with local trees.
Everything you need but nothing excessive. Just right to let you relax and enjoy Costa Rica.
    Thanks Again,

  • Everything about Laura's almost beachfront, light, airy apartment was absolutely stunning. She was excellent with communication from the beginning with setting up transportation and flexibility with dates. The apartment itself is beautiful and very clean. You are perched up top which almost makes it feel like you are staying in the treehouse. Neighbors are your daily roosters, iguanas and howler monkeys but as soon as you walk out of the apartment you are confronted with the most luscious island beach. Samara itself is such a beautiful secluded little city and the locals are so warm and welcoming. There is a local food store that we went to grab groceries and abundance of fresh fruit. There are also a ton of bars and restaurants to enjoy. The apartment's wifi made it possible to share photos with family and Laura was sweet enough to let us use her long board to surf on the beach. The noise at night during the weekends was never an issue, because we went down and joined them. This is definitely the place to be and I strongly reccomend a stay in Laura's place.

  • I stayed here from May 4-10th which is considered low season. The weather was great the whole time. A little rain, mostly in the evening, but not bad. This apartment is just as advertised. It's spacious and has plenty of light. There are many fans to keep the place ventilated, and it's very clean. The water pressure in the shower was great. It did get a little warm in the afternoon even with the fans, so that's when I made plans to be out and about. The entrance is very private. We were having trouble closing the front gate, so the very next day Laura had it fixed for us (without us even asking) and it worked perfectly after that. One of my initial concerns was around wi-fi access because I needed to work a few hours every morning. It worked perfectly. There's a wireless router right in the living room and a desk that made it very easy to do what I needed.
A few other things to note that made me very glad to have booked through Laura was access to her school which is diagonally across from the apartment. The staff was very kind in booking our transport with Osvaldo to get us back to the airport. Laura recommended him, and he was very reliable and arrived early to pick us up for our 4:30 a.m. departure from Samara. Another one of her recommendations was for La Peri at Samara Massage. I can't rave enough about how wonderful my massage was, and I'm very happy I took her recommendation.
The town of Samara itself has a very laid back almost bohemian air to it. I loved just walking around or finding a lounge chair to spend the afternoon on. One of my favorite spots for lounging was Gusto Beach Club. Since it was low season, as long as you buy something you are welcome to use their lounge chairs and umbrellas which I took full advantage of while I was there. I typically started my day with breakfast at Lo Q Hay or at the Samara Org Cafe. The restaurant recommendations from Laura that I tried were good as well.
I had spent a week in Tamarindo before coming to Samara. They were very different experiences and both fun for different reasons. What I loved about Samara was that it felt like I was a million miles away from anything and could truly relax. This little town has a way of transporting you if you let it. If you are looking for the lap of luxury, this isn't the place for you, but if you want to get away to a place that is beautiful, comfortable, engaging, and relaxing...then stay at Laura's and enjoy Samara.

  • We loved our stay! Great host, great location, great space! We had an outstanding vacation. Laura was a very helpful in giving us ideas in planning our activities; my daughter even took a class at the Intercultura School. The apartment is centrally located, just a quick walk to the beach, grocery, restaurants and shopping. Samara is great beach town, plenty to do, but very relaxed. We will definitely be back!

  • Spent 5 night in March 2014. The apartment is very roomy and just a very short stroll to the beach. The beautiful smell of the cashew tree greets you when you come through the gate. It is very close to everything you could want in Samara and the beach is fantastic. The fans kept the room cool and the kitchen was well equipped with everything you need. This is a great place to stay in Samara!

  • Laura was very clear about directions, logistical information etc… right from the beginning. Fantastic host. The place is exactly the way it is described with the beach a few steps down from the property. I would definitely book again and am planning on doing it next year!

Samara and Carillo beaches are beautiful and quiet..non of that busy touristy stuff.
Laura arranged for even horse back riding and her staff at the Intercultura School was also very helpful.

I highly recommend her place to all!

I was born in Switzerland but grew up in England (my parents are English/US), then moved to the States for college where I got my BA in English Lit. and Spanish, and my MA in Cultural Anthropology. I came to Costa Rica for one year, which turned into twenty, after I started Intercultura language school here with a Costa Rican teacher I met while working at a San José language school, and we now have the two schools, one in Heredia and one in Sámara. I live at the beach with my husband, daughter aged 3 and stepson aged 10, and in my free time I like biking, horse-riding (we have a horse) latin dance, and reading, while my husband likes playing football/soccer and cooking (lucky me!). On weekends we spend most of our time with the kids, enjoying the beach and surrounding areas.
