About this listing
Sharing the treetops with monkeys, birds and iguanas, this light, airy, 2nd floor apartment is just 50 meters from the beach, right in the heart of Sámara. Great nature views and the sounds of the ocean throughout. Fully equipped kitchen, cable, WiFi
Poised on a back road that ends at the beach and is shared by the local language school and other lodging units, this unique and spacious apartment (75m2) with its vaulted ceiling is shaded by mango, papaya, plantain, and cashew tres. Our fully furnished apartment has two bedrooms, one bath, and an open-plan living room and kitchen with a marble-tiled breakfast bar, and WiFi included.
The master bedroom has a double bed while the second has two single beds sleeping a total of four comfortably, perfect for a family, two couples or traveling friends. Both rooms have bedside tables, lamps, closets and ceiling fans. Our unique furniture is handmade by local woodworkers using recycled tropical woods and driftwood.
The kitchen has a convection toaster-oven, Italian stovetop, blender, electric water heater and Costa Rican cofffee-drip, and seating for 5 at the breakfast bar.
In the interest of full disclosure, as with any rentals in the heart of Sámara, the bar-restaurants can be noisy at night (mostly on weekends), and there is a new skate park diagonal to us that has live music on Sunday nights for high season. The early morning roosters, dogs and howler monkeys present all over Sámara can also be a noise factor! To that end we have two loud floor fans that work great for drowning out outside noise, and recommend bringing earplugs.
For the use of our guests, we have a pack and play crib, and other children´s equipment may be available, just ask! (we have two kids, aged 4 and 11). The surf school just down the beach offers special rates for our guests and can rent boards by the week or day, as well as give lessons.
Finally, guests are welcome to enjoy the beachfront facilities of the language school (diagonal to the apartment) that we co-own; are offered a 25% discount on our group Spanish clases and may sign up for yoga, Latin dance, zumba and cooking clases at local rates. You are also welcome to consult with our staff/ resources for reservations and/or advice on local activities and trips around the country.
Interaction with Guests
We are happy to help guests with any questions when we are here (we are back and forth between Heredia and Sámara) and give suggestions on things to do in the área. As guests use an entrance separate from ours, they only have to see us if they want to! We recommend using the airbnb site to communicate, as messages come up instantly for us on our mobile airbnb app. Otherwise, guests can find me in the office at the school across the road. When I am out of town, our friendly reception staff will help with any questions.
I love that we are so close to the beach, you don't even need to put your flipflops on, and that there is so much nature and wildlife around us. Also, being right near the language school is a plus, as guests can use the facilities and take part in activities like yoga and dance, and feel like they are part of a community if they want to. Also, absolutely everything is within very short walking distance (no more than a few blocks)!
Most people walk or bike everywhere. The shops are a block down the beach, the bank is a block and a half away, and restaurants are all within one to four blocks.
Other Things to Note
We are a family with two kids and we love to host other families, travelers, anyone wanting something other than the hotel experience! Kids are welcome to use our swingset and trampoline during the day (8am to 5pm -- there is a fire-escape staircase from the apartment that leads to our garden), and we can also help you pre-arrange childcare or bilingual kínder and school options, for those staying for a longer time.
If you want to stay less than a few weeks and there is a space in the calendar, just write to us... we will try and be flexible. If you are in a long term stay (several months+), we have lower rates available too.
All we ask is that people are respectful and not too loud late at night or very early in the morning. We provide linens and towels for use in the house, not for the beach (we use sarongs, which are sold everywhere here and dry really quickly).
A cleaning set of sheets/towels is included weekly for stays over one week (leave your dirty linens at the bottom of the stairs and let us know the day before you will need the clean set. We do not allow smoking in the apartment or gardens. No pets, sorry!
We spent a lovely week in the Casa del Aire. It is just as pictured -- we saw monkeys from our window, picked star fruit in the backyard, and strolled 2 minutes to get to the gorgeous beach of Sàmara. As noted, there is only a spiral staircase to the apartment & a bit of weekend noise from local bars (bring your earplugs), but neither was a problem for us.
Unsere große Tochter vermisst Lauras Tochter jetzt schon!!!
We spent the most relaxing and wonderful vacation at Laura's apartment. It is a stone throw from the beach, and the language school down the street was a great source of information for things to do which was recommended by Laura.
The apartment is just as it is picture very comfortable and welcoming. It was plenty of room for the 4 of us. We were a bit taken back by how expensive the food is around here and cooked mostly at the apartment for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The kitchen had all the basic essentials to make a great meal, and was a great resource for us! There is a large super market a short walk away, where we went shopping for our daily needs and the prices were reasonable.
We were already aware of the late night noise, by the description and other reviewers. Friday and Saturday night was the loudest. It really didn't bother us that much as we were so tired from the day that we easily just pasted out.
For us the heat from 12-3PM was intense so we stayed on the beach in an area that was nicely shaded by palm trees.
Overall we would recommend this place! Laura our host is friendly and very helpful with ideas. The people are nice and the town is and very laid back, great for family.
Wow, what an incredible experience! Sámara has the most relaxed vibe to it, with gorgeous beaches and extremely friendly people. Laura's house is a 2 minute walk to the beach, and another 2 minutes from there to get into the town. The house was gorgeous - we felt like we were up in the trees with the iguanas and the squirrels. Convenient kitchen, great living room, super bedrooms, very private and very clean. We would definitely stay here again!
House was exactly as expected. Laura and her family were perfect hosts. They assisted us in finding things to do and making calls when needed.
We visited during March and April, the hottest months. The house was pretty hot during peak hours but cooled off nicely by evening.
I never had a problem with noise from the bar but my husband did. The fans really help.
My sons bed had a thinner mattress that he didn't like but we layered the blankets under him and he was comfortable. The kids's fans didn't work as well as ours did but we mentioned this to Laura and knowing her, she has probably already replaced them.
The location really couldn't get much better. A short walk (less than a block) from the beach and only slightly farther to stores and restaurants. We didn't rent a car for the entire month we were there.
I highly recommend this rental.
Martina, Peter, Yannis & Lilly
This was our first experience with an AirBnB rental and overall, it was very good. For the money, the apartment is not to be believed – spacious, two bedrooms, decent kitchen, bright and airy living space, fabulous shower, excellent WiFi, so nice and close to the beach. As other reviewers have said, it is up a rather steep spiral staircase – not an issue for us, but something to note for those who might not do well with stairs or heights. There was only one problem for us which turned out to be major enough for us to move: the weekend noise, which has been mentioned by other reviewers and the host as well, starts on Thursday night, a little more on Friday, then Saturday, culminating on Sunday night with a LOT of noise – too much to block out with the fans. On both of our Sunday nights the apartment was not usable in the evening for conversation or reading and then it was very loud until 2:00 AM. We are a family of five and accustomed to quiet on our farm in rural Missouri. Folks with more urban experience or those who want to join the partiers might be just fine. Our host did say that the Sunday night noise was new – a new bar across the lane – and we’re guessing that in time she will be able to prevail upon the authorities to quiet them down. This is where I have to give kudos to AirBnB and to our host – adjusting our stay and arranging for a refund was so very easy. In fact the refund was processed on the day we relocated. We did find a quieter place in Samara, but at twice the price. Overall, a good experience with AirBnB and with our first hosts. Thank you.
About the Host, Laura
I was born in Switzerland but grew up in England, then moved to the States for college where I got my BA in English Lit. and Spanish, and my MA in Cultural Anthropology. I came to Costa Rica for one year, which turned into twenty, after I started Intercultura language school here with a Costa Rican teacher I met while working at a San José language school, and we now have the two schools, one in Heredia and one in Sámara.
I live at the beach with my family; we have a daughter aged 4 and stepson aged 11, and in my free time we like biking, horse-riding (we have a horse) latin dance, reading, playing football/soccer and enjoying the beach and surrounding areas.
