Description

The Space

Come experience Philadelphia in one of the coolest and most fun locations in the city. It is close to public transport but it will take you 30-40 minutes to get down town (tourist spots) if you walk and take the train (just based on schedules and pace) My house is a brand new designed and fully renovated Fishtown row house. This space is not just your run of the mill house but is also an eclectic mash of style and hopefully fun that is continually developing. This 1000 sq ft place is my home and mini-paradise so I invite you to come and spend some time relaxing in the space, using the large fire pit in the back yard and enjoy the amenities I have provided. We are in pizza central here in Fishtown and my place is smack dab in the center of it all. I am within walking distance of tons of bars, restaurants, shops, grocery stores, thrift shops, pep boys, and Greensgrow Farm, just to name a few. When I mean walking distance I am assuming a max 10-15 minute walk to any of these destinations. Guests who stay here will have access to what I know, and also through my 13 years of growing street smarts from existing in this fine city. All you have to do is ask me. I know some people enjoy to get advance information prior to arriving. Once again I can help you prepare for your trip to Philadelphia.

The Guest Quarters - This room is a quiet retreat from the city. The noise levels in this back room are greatly reduced as this is not facing the street. Two European style tilt and turn windows with darker light reducing curtains give you south and western light should you desire. There is a full queen sized bed, dressers and walk-in open closet to give you places to stow all of your belongings the proper way. I have also mounted a flat screen TV with Apple TV, larger speaker system and a DVD player (should you want it) with a selection of movies to work with. There is a gym storage locker in the room for holding anything you want. If you believe in storing your valuables in a safe place I have a combination lock that can be adjusted for you to use. (as long as you return it back open so I can reset the combination). There is radiator heat in the winter time as well as a mini-split ductless Air conditioner for you to use both in the winter (to warm up or cool down the room if necessary) and also to keep the place the perfect temperature for you year round.

The Bathroom - This is a shared bathroom (with me if I am home when you stay) with a very large slate and hex tile shower that is 3.5' x 5' in size. This shower can and does accommodate two adults easily. There is a ToTo toilet (eventually Ill get the heated seat with bidet attachment) which is my favorite part of the bathroom aside from the antique "Standard" pedestal sink. A large skylight fills the room with light throughout the day (but is especially nice in the morning) and also lets that build up of excessive steam escape so you can prevent a foggy mirror. There is plenty of space for all of your toiletries so you can add them to the mix so you don't feel as though everything is trapped in your room.

The Kitchen - This is my favorite and most used part of the house. I love to cook. You will find out very quickly that if there is one thing that I care about it is having the correct utensils and cooking implements to create any type of cuisine. You also need to have spices, dried goods, and canned goods and they all have a place in my kitchen. They are free for you to use and have fun with. I love when the house smells good all the time.
You will have your own shelf space in the fridge and freezer should you want to get groceries and stay in and cook. The layout in the kitchen is all open shelving. Every piece of equipment and cooking item is mostly visible to whomever is working in there. It should make your learning of the kitchen that much more easy and hopefully enjoyable for you. Please I encourage you to use the spam that I purchased and make something amazing with it ;)

Living Room/Dining Room/Style - The dining room has a large communal style dining table that is 7' x 4' so a large meal can be enjoyed here by many folks. The living room merges with the dining room as they share the same space. They are connected through open shelving that extends all around the room, providing spaces for books, cookbooks, magazines, ephemera, art, dvds, and most importantly record storage galore. This is where I like to sit back next to the mini bar and bay windows, pour a nice cold drink and pop on some tunes, either by record or by ipod and hang out.
The style of the house is a little eclectic to match my personality but it is also very functional and a feels well lived in even though it is brand new. I hope when people come here they get ideas for what they want to do with their own dwellings. I am happy to share my secrets with you!

Backyard - The back yard and side yard are constantly in a state of development as I focusing on converting the side lot into a full garden for the 2014 season. Right outside the back door is the fire pit which I encourage all guests to enjoy. It will always be stocked with combustibles for a toasty treat. There is an extremely large pig roaster that doubles as a grill surface should you have any interest in bar b q it is there for your enjoyment. Next to the bar b-q there is a compost pile that i am working diligently on so my self-sustainability can reach maximum potential. Your contributions are paramount to its success.

Guests should expect to have their privacy respected first and foremost but should understand I could be popping in and out and since I reside here could be conducting any one of my routine exercises, from cooking to entertaining to working on the house itself.

Guests should know that I am an entertainer and I can most certainly accommodate your need for entertainment if I am around and not busy. I have been known to show you around town, take you out for some drinks at a local bar, tell you some good or bad stories, and even cook with or for you. Either way I think you will find the house to be a fun place to be and enjoy. It doesn't feel very much like you are in the city when you are inside, which is the desired effect. I hope that it will be more country than city in feel.
Guests are free to do laundry in the basement. Ill have instructions for using the utilities and all I ask is for an honor system to help me buy more laundry detergent and dryer sheets etc.
Guests can enjoy breakfast on their own in the kitchen or down at the coffee shop at the end of the block (which is amazing by the way) or we can discuss custom tailoring a breakfast for you at a price as long as we do so in advance of your arrival.

Guest Access

Kitchen, bath, laundry, fire pit, bar BBQ, Apple TV, records, stereo, cooking utensils, complimentary beverage, fresh garden vegetables when in season. Canned veggies from the garden when off-season! Just ask me for some!

Interaction with Guests

I can keep interaction to whatever the guest would care to have. I am very flexible in this area. Your privacy and comfort are number 1.

The Neighborhood

The neighborhood I am in is called Fishtown. Most recently it is known for being the top hipster destination in the US as it is affordable, an entrepreneurial hot spot and is close to the river. It is a predominantly white neighborhood (although this is becoming more diverse as of late with all the new transplants), and historically speaking it has been a working class neighborhood which explains the smaller format of the houses and the tight alleyways and side streets. Fishtown on foot is very easy to traverse distance-wise but it is a triangle turned onto one of its points because of the Delaware river. This can create a disorienting effect as your N-S-E-W directions can easily change one block at least once in your journey. However this means that you could stumble onto one of the very many cute and often times special bars, restaurants, hole in the wall shops that have sprung up here over the years. The neighborhood is very safe to walk around in and if you have questions as to where to go I can show you a map and help you get where you want in the safest and quickest way possible.

Getting Around

The public transit is about a 15-20 minute walk from my house to the safer and more traversed Girard stop on the Market-Frankford subway line.
What should be clear is the easiest way to my place from either the airport or down town with any heavy luggage is a taxi. Think NYC and trying to move your luggage around. Don't make things harder on yourself if you don't have to. Typically my guests are not aware that this is is not the easiest place to get to the most tourist spots on the map but there are more neighborhood like spots here as this is an up and well on its way neighborhood. On the way to subway you will pass a few hot spots for dancing, drinking and music venues, all of which are fine establishments and have become what has become the definitive "Heart" of Fishtown @ Girard Ave and Frankford Ave. Hands down the coffee shop down the block is my favorite place. The neighborhood is blossoming wonderfully with new businesses, lots of community engagement and exciting new restaurants and bars.

You can also take the trolley at Girard and Berks which will decrease your walking time to the Market Frankford line.

Other Things to Note

There is so much more to tell you about but I hope that you will find my place to be just right for your stay. I think you will agree it is unlike any place you have ever stayed and hopefully you will want to come back. The spring and summer are going to yield plenty of vegetables that I will make available to guests to satisfy their culinary desires, on the house of course! Winter is full of canned tomatoes from the harvest this year...farmed right in my side yard. If you love to cook, just ask and Ill make them available to you!

House Rules

1. This is my house and I live here so please respect my things and privacy and it will be reciprocated back to you.
1a. Please after booking a few days before arriving let me know your arrival time so the room can be prepared and someone can let you in.
2. Please no additional pets or animals.
3. Use the kitchen all you want but please clean up after yourself. A sink filled with dishes is not ok. A dish rack with clean and drying dishes is totally great. I don't mind putting away clean things and it assures it all goes back where they originated from.
4. This might be self explanatory but please don't have a party at my house or bring people here that are not part of your registered party.
5. Please be careful using the fire pit. I don't want you or anyone to get hurt.
6. You can smoke but please do so outside the front or back and toss your extinguished butts in the fire pit in the back.
7. I don't have a lights out policy at this time so have fun!
