Grand re-opening special! With a big, gated yard, front/back porches, fast internet, and ample parking, the cabin is perfect for any occasion. A planetarium at night, wood burning stove, bird lover's paradise, and fire pit for bonfires.
The house is 1200 square feet, with two private bedrooms and one full bathroom. One bed is a queen, the other is a plush queen air bed, each fit two people comfortably. Two additional sleepers could be accommodated on the futon in the large living room. Convenient electric wall heat is available, as well as a large wood stove which can be very cozy!
Spring is on its way on the north coast and it feels like summer much of the time, since the property is located in a warm and sunny microclimate!
It is located across from Mackerricher state park, less than 5 minutes from PCH highway 1. Pacific Coast Highway is world famous for it's stunning natural beauty and charming oceanside towns. In fact, the Mendocino coast was rated 4th in New York Times top destinations for 2014!
The 1.5 acre property is fully fenced. The huge backyard looks like a meadow sometimes…you can even see the neighbors pretty horse! He's a fan of apples.
The property is located on 1.5 fenced acres of sunny land. You will have access to the entire yard and house, which includes a laundry room.
We have high-speed wireless internet, which is a rarity in this county. Don't let yourself get stuck in the stone age!
The only place that is off limits is the garage - this is a separate building that is not connected to the house at all. This is where I keep my toys, and there is a small studio in the back where I reside if I'm around.
Interaction with Guests
Typically, after booking, I will coordinate things and help you plan your trip if needed. Most local attractions are not marked at all, so if you were just driving through, you would miss a lot of fun stuff! Whatever you're looking for, I can help you find it.
Upon arrival, you will be greeted by my friend who will give you a tour of the property and answer any last-minute questions you might have. After that, you will be on your own, but we are just a phone call away.
Weekends are a two night minimum for spring and summer months. Last minute requests may be accommodated if there is availability.
You'll love it here because it's quiet, serene...in nature. Every day you can see deer (even babies!), quail, rabbits and many, many wild birds. There are currently flocks of turkeys, vultures, hawks, ravens, doves, blue jays, 3 crazy clans of hummingbirds, and many others in the yard. Sit outside with your eyes closed and listen to them!
The night sky from the back yard is just like a planetarium, complete with shooting stars. Perfect for long-exposure night photography. It's a sight you will never forget.
The neighbors are all retired and keep to themselves.
The house is conveniently located close to several area attractions! Here are just a few, all less than 10 minutes away:
Diving - This area is famous for its abundant abalone and sea urchin. There is even a space on the deck where you can wash and dry your wetsuit!
Whale watching - California gray whales and orcas are migrating right now! Mackerricher state park, just across the highway, is one of many great whale-watching spots.
Tall sand dunes are only 5 minutes away. You can spend all day jumping on them.
Glass beach - Generations ago, this beach used to be a landfill. Today, the only thing that remains is glass of many colors, tumbled by the surf for years. Grab a handful of them, and admire how they sparkle!
Living Light Culinary Institute - a nearby cooking school, renowned for its teachings on raw foods. They have a raw cafe tourists and locals enjoy.
Horseback riding - Ricochet Ranch up the road offers daily horseback tours of the beach and beyond. They even have a towering Clydesdale you can ride. You may see seals, wild geese, or even a breaching whale!
Are you a dirtbike rider? There are many trails nearby, including hidden dirtbike-friendly beaches.
When visiting our community, having a vehicle is essential. We welcome motorcycles and bikes, and if you happen to have an exotic car, you may be able to park it in the garage - please inquire ahead of time. We can accommodate RVs, although I wouldn't recommend anything longer than 26 feet.
The only public transportation is called the "CC Rider" and it travels daily between downtown Fort Bragg, downtown Santa Rosa, and Santa Rosa airport. It's a slow journey, even as public transit goes.
Other Things to Note
There is a fenced, organic garden and several large apple trees. Very soon, they will have beautiful blossoms that will give a steady shower of beautiful petals. Many good photographs have come out of the backyard - this is a photographer's paradise!
It's still mushroom season and locals love this! We would be happy to give you some pointers for foraging. We can show you how to make a mushroom spore print on a paper.
We recently found a local secret natural spring! We would be happy to make you a little map there if you promise to keep it a secret!
Another secret local gem we have found is a tidal blowhole that's so big you can rappel down into it. Not to be missed.
There are several places you can go to rent any type of recreation equipment. There are many things you can do here. Fish, kayak, hike, forage, boating, bike riding, horseback riding, wildlife, nature, the beach, the sand dunes...the list goes on and on...
Please feel free to leave dirty dishes and trash in its receptacle. Please use the recycle bag. Thank you!
Please always remember to close the gate. Otherwise the deer will eat the shrubs for dinner.
No tobacco smoking in the house. 420/215 is allowed anywhere.
If you encounter any of my neighbors, please tell them that you are friends of mine, and that we met in San Francisco.
There will be space in the fridge for your things. Please feel free to use the typical things like cream, sugar, coffee, teas, condiments, etc. You have full use of the kitchen, which is set up for entertaining! There are to-go cups for coffee. Mornings can be romantically foggy sometimes, and a cup to-go is just the right way to start your adventuring!
There is a private septic system so please do not flush ANYTHING other than the lovely #1, #2 and tp :).
Pets, including therapy animals, emotional support animals, and service dogs in-training, are allowed on a case-by-case basis, based on the breed, age, and weight - please mention this when booking. The cost is $40 a night per pet. They may not be left at the property unattended. Guests with unplanned pets may be turned away without a refund.
If you happen to have a trained service animal, they are welcome to stay with no additional charge. Key characteristics of a service animal are:
* Possess a stable, even temperament without anxiety, reactivity or aggression of any kind.
* Walk nicely on a leash at all times, without pulling, straining, lunging, lagging, circling or forging.
* Remain quietly by their handler’s side when their handler stops, without wandering or losing focus.
* Keep his or her nose to his or her self at all times, even if there are food, products or other interesting things readily accessible.
You must be ready to demonstrate this upon check-in, and research U.S. C.F.R. § 36.202 fully before requesting this exception.
We had a nice mellow time at Mike's place. The space is chill and easy to relax in. Linda's eggs were amazing!!
Comfortable cabin with a nice kitchen. Great for preparing meals. Quiet property with a garden that you are welcome to pick greens from. Mike and Linda greeted us with fresh farm eggs and some treats for Valentines Day. Tranquil area close to some great coastline. Plenty of towels for 4 adults for the weekend. Mike was also understanding when we arrived late.
Cute house lovingly cared for by its owners on a large parcel of land. Thoughtful touches abound, like flossers and qtips and fresh eggs, and the decor is charming. The living room is massive and the bedrooms are smaller but functional. I definitely wasn't under any illusions that it was a five-star hotel - the bathroom is a bit worn - but everything was very clean and bright and easy to find. The house is about five minutes north of Fort Bragg near MacKerricher Park, and it comes with a massive backyard and a beautiful vegetable garden. There were some other people staying in an outbuilding on the edge of the property while we were there, but the house and yard felt very private and secure. A great retreat for my husband, toddler, infant, dog, and me.
"the guy hanging out in the RV" was doing some repairs/restoration for me. There are two buttons on the remote, which may have confused you. all batteries are new, as is the gate, and openers. For $1200 it should work. apologies for the confusion. Glad my worker was there to help you.
"Other people staying in an outbuilding" were our caretakers while we were out of town, which we explained when we said we would be out of town. We state in our profile of our listing that there we may be on the property attending to things while you are renting, so i am confused why you felt you had to mentioned it.
Also, we noticed that your child wrote in red marker on our djembe drum. Shall i open a claim for this? It's obvious that someone tried to clean it off, but alas, it's still there. It has great sentimental value and now it's ruined.
Thanks, Rachel and Mike
The experience was great! Without hesitation, I would recommend staying here to enjoy Mendocino and would stay here again next time I need a quick getaway from city life!! They were so welcoming and attentive. Though our schedules didn't allow us to actually meet in person, they definitely knew how to welcome their guests. From the blackberry upside down cake, fresh veggies and their farm fresh eggs, I definitely felt at home. The home was super clean, and was a large space and full kitchen! Great space and great people! Thank you Mike and Rachelle!
This is the PERFECT little get-away from the city! Mike and Rachel are so friendly and they have such a charming home. It's a very peaceful and quiet space inside and out. A wonderful place to relax and unwind, or perhaps have a little bonfire outside or cozy up and watch a movie next to the wood-burning stove on a chilly night. I especially loved the hens in the yard and the herb garden on the deck. The house is very clean, organized, delightfully decorated, and this might be weird to mention but the water pressure in the shower is nothing short of magical! I honestly can't say enough good things about this lovely home. Fort Bragg has lots of things to discover if you decide to venture out, like horseback riding (which we did and it was amazing also!), kayaking, the brewery, quaint little shops and restaurants, hiking, the gorgeous beaches, the list goes on. My point is don't hesitate to go to Fort Bragg and stay here at Mike and Rachel's boho cottage, you won't be disappointed!
Everything was perfect! The house is big with plenty of sunlight. We have 2 small kids so we spent quite some time in the house and in the yard. The kids loved the yard. And the chickens. They were afraid at first but then they spent hours trying to catch one (they are 2 and 5 so the chickens were safe). We got 4 different eggs upon arrival that we ate soft boiled the next morning. After that first taste, our kids asked for yummy eggs every day ;) Toward the end of our stay we got to go pick some eggs in the cop... It felt like easter!
Everybody slept well in the very comfortable beds and we enjoyed the nice seats and hammock during the kids' naps.
The house is located across from MacKerricher State Park where you can find a beautiful black sand beach and tide pools. A paradise for small and big kids.
Mike and Rachel are the best hosts. Relaxed and very friendly.
I wish we could come up there more often!
We walked in and felt comfortable. Loved the decorated house, welcomed greeting, chickens, garden and the closeness to Fort Bragg. Rachel and Mike we very friendly and made us feel comfortable. We would love to go back year after year.
