Romantic hideaway! This property has the lush beauty and privacy of Hana, without the drive! Only 15-20 minutes to the airport, 10 minutes to beaches, 2 minutes to restaurants and shops...on a private gated property with organic nursery. BEAUTIFUL!
This place is a gem! SO CUTE! A recently remodeled 1930's cottage....that Jimi Hendrix stayed in when he was on Maui in the 1970's to film Rainbow Bridge. Beautiful, quiet...REAL Maui! Recently remodeled, very cute! It is lined with cedar on the inside so it smells delightful when you walk in....
The Gingerbread House is a studio cottage with a kitchenette (toaster oven, microwave, coffee maker, counter-top burners, full sized fridge) and spacious bathroom with a large custom-built, tiled shower.. It has high cathedral ceilings with a huge window that looks out on beautiful lush greenery. It is on a gated property. There is not Internet in the cottage, but it is available on the property.
It has a queen sized bed, as well as a trundle bed (can be used as a twin or two twins/king), and an outdoor patio under the spectacular tree canopy. The property is on 4.5 acres of lush beauty with a seasonal stream, an organic veggie start farm, fruit trees galore (help yourself when in season....) papaya, banana, lilikoi (passion fruit), coffee, plantains, oranges, mac nuts, avocado, lychee, mango, guava, grapefruit, tangerines, lemons, coconuts, noni....and you also have access to an additional 4 acres on the adjacent property—which is home of The Sacred Garden—beautiful!.
WE HAVE NOT INCLUDED the 13.41% Hawaii Transient Accommodations Tax because you would have to pay the airbnb fee on that so to save you their fee WE WILL SEND YOU A SEPARATE INVOICE for the additional fee. The tax is $18 -26 a night depending on the time of year (price per night). PLEASE NOTE THAT IT IS STATE LAW THAT WE ADD THE TAX...Sorry!
We have a 3 night minimum however we will book for 1-2 nights if the nights are available between other bookings so feel free to check with us. We have a 5 night minimum during Holiday periods like Christmas.
We are in an awesome location just 20 minutes from the airport and Costco, and only 2 miles to Makawao town restaurants and shops, 7 minutes to Paia, 5 minutes to Haiku town. 50 Minutes to Haleakala National Park entrance.
We also have a house on the property that is a vacation rental as well so if you need more space for a larger gathering let me know!
I offer retreat services—relationship coaching, personal and spiritual growth, guided labyrinth walks and work with Maui's best practitioners so if you want more than a vacation, let me know! We can help you with everything from Massage, to intuitive readings! I also perform weddings so if you are thinking of getting married while you are on Maui....I can also help you with that! This rental is on the property adjacent to The Sacred Garden which has two walking labyrinths, water lily ponds, meditation gardens, and more ...and is free and open to the public daily.
The elevation is about 1000 feet which is PERFECT on Maui! We are about 10 degrees cooler than sea level which makes for absolutely comfortable days (70-80 degrees) and GREAT temps for sleeping (usually in the 60's). This is the MAXIMUM elevation you can stay and still go scuba diving on Maui. Speaking of diving...we are avid divers and can assist you booking Scuba Diving with the best dive operation on Maui.
You will definitely want a rental car....there is a bus stop a mile or two away but not ideal....and bikes are a little hazardous as these are hilly, windy, narrow roads.
We have a HUGE friendly dog on the property... he is great...but be forewarned he is BIG! (180 pounds)...not a barker, super sweet. We also have 4 cats on the property but no animals are inside the cottage. There are wild chickens and roosters and cows on the property across the stream. Please keep in mind that this is a jungle environment and it is nearly impossible to keep all insects out of any accommodation in Hawaii unless we poison the place. If you are phobic of insects, the jungle will not be your best bet. Gecko lizards are also common inside the houses here.
Vacation rental permit. STMP T2013 0013
You have access to the adorable cottage, wireless internet, shared BBQ and the full 8.5 acres of two adjacent lots that includes The Sacred Garden... We have off road parking on a gated property. You are welcome to help yourself to seasonal fruit.
Interaction with Guests
We will greet you and orient you to the property and live on the adjacent property so can be there in less than a minute if you need us...but we also respect that you sought our property for privacy. We are available to guide you, answer questions and give you a tour of the farm if desired.
This area is a magical well kept secret on Maui. We are located at the dividing line between the wet side and the dry side, which means we get enough rain to stay green, and enough sun to stay sane! We get rainbows almost daily and are the perfect temperature (60's at night, 70's-80's in the day).
You definitely need a rental car. The bus stop is 2 miles away...the roads are relatively narrow and windy....
Other Things to Note
Please note that we have to add the 13.41% Transient accommodations Tax...separately from the airbnb charges. If we included them in the price here, you would have to pay airbnb's fees on top of that....
We have a HUGE, extremely friendly dog on the property....you will love him!
Please no smoking inside the house. This property is a "drama-free zone" so please respect the peace and serenity concept.... Our biggest rule is that you respect the land, people, plants and animals on it...and yourselves as well!
We welcome children but ask that parents monitor them while in the yard....this is "real nature" with a seasonal stream, slippery rocks, etc. and we do not want anyone hurt. Please take 100% responsibility for your safety and that of your children.
Quiet hours are 10pm-8am.
This is a working nursery and farm so please know that we do work and live here. It is very private however, others are on the property. It is a LARGE property....
We appreciate respectful, responsible people who are careful with our home, yard and pets. We also maintain a peaceful, happy environment with no abuse of each other, property or animals.
Please no smoking in the house or on the lanai...(the yard is okay)
There is a great (big) friendly dog on the property....and a few cats (no pets inside...)
Check in is after 3pm and check out is by 11am. We can accommodate earlier check ins and later check outs if no one is staying with us the night before or after...

Steve and Eve were both friendly and helpful. They even helped us out when our trip was extended due to a late flight. The home and grounds were beautiful. Thanks!
Had a very relaxing stay in an awesome environment! Internet was down but we still had our phones and they worked pretty good up there. And actually disconnecting from the web was therapeutic! Here I am still on vacation writing this note from my timeshare, already back on the grid!
My husband and I had an AMAZING time, our only regret is that we didn't stay longer! Eve is a gracious host and she helped us with everything we needed. The property is beautiful and we really enjoyed the fresh fruit trees right out of the back door. The cottage is comfortable, cozy and very peacful.
What a perfect little getaway. Husband and I have been to Hawaii many times and wanted something different, away from the wall of condo buildings by the beaches.
Makawao is a charming Upcountry town and the cottage at the Sacred Garden, a short drive away from town, was comfortable and quiet. It is very well appointed with cooking implements that allowed us to make breakfast every morning and dinner many nights. Large bathroom and good storage for our gear. The cottage is perfect for two people and perhaps a young child but any more would feel crowded.
The Hogans recently added wifi capabilities so you can check your email and post updates to make your(website hidden)friends envious of your visit. There is no television but a monitor with a DVD player for movies. Beautifully dark at night, we had spectacular star gazing every evening. We had not realized that there was a washing machine and dryer available to us -- a great surprise.
Eve welcomed us when we arrived in the evening and gave an overview of the grounds, what fruits were in season and ready to pick (tangarines and avos!) and offered any support we may need. Otherwise, we never saw her or Steve. There is a working nursery on the property and so a little bit of car traffic right by the cottage around 9 AM and 5 PM. By little bit, I am talking about three cars.
On Maui, you need to drive everywhere. The closest beach is in Paia, about 20 minutes away. Being in Upcountry, you are on your way up to Haleakala, a short drive from Kahului where you can get whatever provisions you need and we learned shortcuts to Kihei and the East Maui beaches.
The cottage (and the spirit of Jimi) was a memorable stay on Maui. If you are looking for the road less travelled plus want approving nods from the locals when asked about where you are staying, check out the gingerbread cottage.
Our stay at the Gingerbread House was amazing. eve met us at the property and was very thorough on explaining everything. The cottage and bed were so cozy and comfortable and we had everything we needed. Well almost...we had failed to bring any warm clothing (bc it was Hawaii!!) and we were due to have a mtn bike ride at 9,000 ft (brrrrr) and Eve showed up with all sorts of sweatshirts and jackets for BOTH my boyfriend and I and that made such a huge difference on the ride!! We also got to take place in a full moon labrynth ceremony which was on the grounds and that was special to both of us. Perfect spot, perfect little cottage and perfect hosts...what more could you ask for ??
The Gingerbread House was the best place our wife and I have ever stayed, anywhere.
Eve greeted us in the driveway to take us in the house and show us around. Moments later Steve popped in to introduce himself as well. The place was INCREDIBLE. A beautiful, upscale little cottage that looks like it was just built. It had a faint, refreshing smell of fresh cedar from the walls and was spotlessly clean. It was cozy and felt like we were staying in our own little home. Everything we needed was provided from extra towels, to bath products (in an awesome bathroom), to coffee and cookies to start our stay off deliciously.
The grounds of the property were epic and because of a recent rain the stream was in full force. We watched it flow over coffee every morning and picked a few tangerines from their tree for breakfast. In the afternoon we sat stream side and read for hours in what might be the most peaceful setting we've ever encountered. We also wandered their adjacent property, The Sacred Garden to take in the labyrinth and nursery as well as the organic farm.
It's a huge property that feels like you're secluded from the world yet it's only a few minutes drive to the quaint historic Makawao town with plenty of restaurants, or Paia, the coolest beach town on Maui with shops and some of the best dining on the island. It's also the beginning of the famed Road to Hana which is a must-drive while you're there.
We only saw Eve a few times during our 5 day stay but she checked in regularly via text to make sure we were happy. She stopped by just before we left to say goodbye and give us hugs.
As much as we loved the other places we stayed this is easily the best of the bunch. We plan to return again next year and hopefully make it an annual holiday trip to Maui. Highly recommend a stay here!
the gingerbread house was a big highlight of our vacation in maui. the property is so beautiful and peaceful, the stars at night were incredible... definitely an unforgettable place!
eve was great & very easy to communicate - highly recommended!

This property is the cure for "Nature-Deficit-Disorder"....let us give you a tour of the farm and garden, teach you about coffee production and tropical plants....then make a smoothie (or other delicious tropical beverage!) from fresh banana, mango or likikoi!
