Interaction with Guests
I will be meeting them on arrival, to give them the key, a map of the area and some advice and on (website hidden) case i am not able to meet them on departure guests will be able to leave the keys to my neighbor, Maria.
It's a quiet neighborhood, the house is at the edge of the village, this offers enough privacy.
There is no public transport, one needs to have a car/bike, can park just outside the house, always enough space. It's a less than half an hour drive from Heraklion airport, head to the West, towards Rethymno city, exit to Gazi town on the right and then turn left at the traffic-lights and left again at the second road on your left (no signs in English yet but follow the ENISA sign only once, then go all straight. The road to Kroussonas has just been re-opened and mostly asphalt, new and wide. Just two short parts are not asphalt yet but they are still safe. Just 2klm before Krousonas, turn right and see the sign to Loutraki. Please let me know before your arrival where you would like us to meet. I could come to the airport or to the village.
Other Things to Note
Please feel free and welcome in the house, but do respect it at the same time in every respect.
No smoking allowed in the house, better in the yard. Be quiet at siesta time (phone number hidden)). Sorry, no pets allowed.
The old stone house in Loutraki really is a wonderful place. We stayed there for 10 days. The neighbours are really kind and brought us fresh vegetables and fruits nearly every day. The house is well located so you can do some day trips by car and experience Crete. Especially Rethymnon (1 hour), Matala/Kommos & Lentas (1.5 hours) are worth a trip. We can recommend the house and Polina has been a really nice host.
Charming stone house tastefully modernised. Cottage is well equipped and was left with essentials such as cooking oil etc. Village of Lotraki has lovely views over olive groves and vineyards with distant mountains. We were warmly welcomed by Polina who had baked home made bread and supplied a vey nice bottle of local wine.
We felt at home in the village and we took our evening meals at a local taverna. We made some good friends in the village and hope we can reurn one day.
The best thing about Loutraki is the peaceful setting despite being only 20 km from Heraklion. The main road to the village is largely remade and in excellent condition.
The region offers splendid drives, great beaches. The network of country roads around Loutraki provide for interesting walks with great views.
The house is very cozy, a bit of a drive from the main city but the view along the way makes it worth it. The village is quiet and Polina was very nice and informative.
We loved staying at Polina's home in the hills - so much better than staying in the city! Everything was there for us and we were warmly welcomed - Polina came and shared some of her family's own raki with us as we sat in the courtyard and learned about Greek culture and history. The house is cosy, clean and comfortable, and the neighbours were very welcoming with a "kali̱méra" greeting each morning as we sipped our coffee in the sun.
The village is within easy drive of Heraklion and also all the other sites that we wanted to visit including Knossos and many old monastaries and towns.
We really enjoyed our time on Crete and experiencing village life - we saw many things that as a "on the tourist trail" visitor you would miss out on. Thank you so much Polina for your hospitality and warm welcome!
We stayed in Polina's beautiful stone house in the beginning of April. The house has a great atmosphere, a fully equipped kitchen and cosy fireplace. It's just a short drive from Heraklion airport and Polina was there to welcome us with Raki when we arrived, she's really lovely and told us all we needed to know about the village and house. Although the house is in a small village off the beaten track, it's an ideal base to explore the North coast from, while experiencing life in a real Cretan village. The neighbours made us feel extremely welcome, invited us over for Raki and offered us cake to have with our coffee. The village has a small taverna, which is definitely worth a visit, the food is simple but delicious, there is also a fruit and vegetable stand and a small shop. The terrace gets the sun until just after lunch, so the house stays nice and cool. We'd definitely recommend this house to other visitors.
About the Host, Polina
I am Polina, originally from Crete, a very powerful island. Having traveled around, studied and lived abroad for many years, i came back to appreciate the most of it and to host people in this nice island and mountainous feel of Crete. I still love moving around but also being grounded and having a base is also important to me.
