The Space

Immerse yourself in the luxury of the Fiji Islands. This unique and opulent opportunity offers couples, families and perhaps even battered backpackers a place to relax and rejuvenate amid a flourishing postcard-perfect paradise. You can see happiness from here.

**THE DESTINATION**
Taveuni, aptly named Fiji’s Garden Isle, is the country’s third largest island and is comprised of one very large, but dormant, volcano. Steeped in nature’s sweetest secrets, with a Mataqali (family) of friendly Fijians charged as her caretakers, the island and surrounding waters are home to the Rainbow Reef, one of many world-famous dive sites; Lake Tagimoucia, the hiding place of the fabled Tagimoucia flower; Bouma National Heritage Park, Waitavala Waterslide and Lavena Point, which each boast several majestic mid-jungle waterfalls; as well as Ravilevu Nature Preserve and Taveuni Forest, two of the island’s most prolific bird sanctuaries.

Incredibly, the island offers even more. Eco-industry abounds here, keeping the island in its presently pristine condition. The land is laden with organically grown fruit, root and vegetable gardens. Fresh fish are sustainably farmed. Even the sweet-smelling coconut and frangipani massage oils are sourced from the islands own natural resources and created using practices passed down through generations of earth-aware Fijians.

With so much natural beauty, tradition and inherent culture, it’s easy to see why discerning vacationers and enchanted expats, along with their fellow Fijians, have been hiding away here all these years.

**THE ACCOMODATION**
Maravu, the exclusive resort of which your private rental is a part,is nestled nicely between Welagi and Naselesele villages, right around the corner from the Matei Airport, and within walking distance to the beach, bus and local convenience shops.

Our Treehouse, the highest house on the property, is fitted out with the finest of five-star luxuries. Stress mysteriously disappears as you ascend the steps to your treetop retreat, turn and take in the view of Somosomo Strait stretching as far as the eye can see. Paradise looms at every angle… especially from the sprawling deck which runs the length of the structure and houses a hammock, chaise lounge chairs, outdoor dining area and even a secret stone shower where you can soap up in style beneath the sunny (or starry) skies. Inside, you’ll find the hardwood floors coupled with locally hand-made furniture make quite a cozy sitting and sleeping space. Soft leather warrior-style club chairs create the perfect space to curl up with a cup of tea and a good book, a beautifully draped four-poster bed sets the scene for romance uninhibited, and if things get too hot, just fold open your glass paneled front wall to let in the soft sea breeze.

**THE DEAL**
A slight twist on the conventional is what really makes Maravu’s five star’s shine. This remote resort has been reimagined into a humble hostel, where local interaction and eco-living are the order of the day.

Solar panels are now in place where gas-guzzling generators stood before, providing evening energy to the resort’s main building alone. All other structures on the property are provided with Fijian-made candles (and bright twinkling stars) to light their night once the sun has set.

Staff operate serenely, on Fiji time, and can often be found conversing quietly with guests or giving weaving, cooking and other village-life lessons. Happily they share their culture with any eager ears they happen to come across.

Although your private Treehouse is set apart from the larger resort compound, you are welcome at any time to join other guests in resort activities or make use of the restaurant, bar, pool or spa. Alternatively, you may choose to relax in the reclusiveness of your treetop sanctuary and allow our smiling staff to provide you with in-room food, beverage and massage services.

Our concierge booking desk is also at your disposal, and our local team is ready at all times to share their secret island knowledge to help you plan-out, make reservations and schedule transportation for your idyllic day.

  • The Treehouse is beautiful and the Fijian hosts are amazingly warm and welcoming. It's a fabulous spot and the treehouse is just like the photos. Taveuni is an amazing island and the Treehouse/Maravu is very well located to see all the places on the island- by boat, bus or by taxi. I really can't say enough about the wonderful people who took care of us there. Special hug to Aggie!! We left when one of the managers was leaving and got a loving bula farewell song by all the staff which will stay in my heart. Awwww.
Like others said, there was confusion about what was or wasn't included- meals, etc. I wouldn't say the food was fabulous. It was uneven. It definitely is not wheelchair accessible and there are a few other things mentioned (washer, dryer, kitchen privileges, gym) etc that aren't really part of the amenities- so it would be good for that to be updated.
Please note that the host, Henry, is often traveling and so he may not get back to you as quickly, but when he does, he's friendly and warmly responsive.

  • The Taveuni Treehouse met our expectations and more. My husband and I were picked up from the airport by our lovely host Aggie. The treehouse is located within the Maravu Resort so you have the nice added bonus of peacefully relaxing in your room or going down to the dinning area or pool to hang out and meet other guests.

The room was spotless and comfortable with spectacular views. From the deck you can enjoy views of the ocean by day and star gazing at night. Electricity is on only in the evening but once you step foot on this resort, you'll hardly miss it. Down in the main lobby electricity and wifi are on most of the day if you need. As the other reviewer posted, there is no hot water in the room but luckily Fiji's warm weather made this enjoyable.

Everyone working at the Maravu Resort went above and beyond in helping us feel at home. Anything you need, they'll do their best to help you. The resort also organizes some free activities during the day along with day trips to other islands (for an added fee) that you are welcome to take part in. There are fun nightly kava sessions were the staff and other guests gather around, play guitar, and talk well into the evening.

The food was delicious - we fully enjoyed everything we ate. New menus are posted daily. The breakfast toast and fruit was delicious, yes it was just toast and fruit but I looked forward to every morning.

Like the pervious reviewer, what was included was slightly unclear. Since the treehouse is separate from the resort, the staff might not have been clear on what was included as well. We were charged for snorkeling gear but only $15/day and the gear was in good condition and still very inexpensive. There was some confusion as to whether meals were included. They were not advertised as such, but then another reviewer indicated they were. When we asked in person they said no; then we offered to pay for our first meal and they said don't worry about it; then they did in fact charge us for the meals at the end. As previously stated - all the food we ate was delicious, the portions big, and reasonably priced.

  • We arrived in Taveuni exhausted after many hours in transit. We were greeted at the airport by Anna and taken to our accommodation: The Tree-house, which is within Maravu Plantation Resort. As the doors to the bure opened the spectacular view of azure sea framed by the lush green palms engulfed us. The position and the layout of the tree-house is exceptional. The large queen size bed is positioned off the outdoor deck so you can enjoy outstanding views from bed.
Though the bure is stunning, it is a bit run down and not fully functional (air con, lights) as electricity was supplied for 2 hours each night. The hot water system was non-operational, the bathroom walls and ceiling were partly perished. Having said this, the position and furnishing throughout are magic.
The nightly rate covered all meals. Meals were delivered to the tree-house at our chosen times and they were fantastic. We were happy to hear this as on arrival it was not clear to us or the staff what was included. The resort staff, Rafa looked after us really well. We had a very relaxing time here with kayaking around at sunset, going to the little restaurant bar over looking a spectacular sandy beach cove (use of kayaks was included) and drinking kava and listening to music with the staff at night being our main activities.
We highly recommend staying at this place and visiting Taveuni Island. : )

About
I love islands, beaches, seafood, volleyball, culture fusion, but most of all, i love travelling. I've travelled around the world and found my favourite spot...Fiji! My family's business is hospitality based so i manage a couple of impossibly beautiful small resorts in the North Eastern Islands. Our style is simple, fun, eco, adventurous, and atmospheric that works in harmony with outer island villages. I'm excited to be involved with airbnb.com, to open the door for intrepid travellers, to an immaculate tropical island paradise.
